Assoc. Prof. Roberto Figueroa, Jr. and Asst. Prof. Emely Amoloza of the UPOU Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS) participated in the 22nd International Conference for Media in Education (ICoME 2024) from 21-23 August 2024 held at the Meiji University, Nakano Campus in Tokyo, Japan.
Dr. Figueroa served as a panelist during the discussion on Reconsidering Educational Media Studies from the perspective of the “Performance”, while Dr. Amoloza presented the paper titled, “Loss and Damage: Creative Approaches to Educating Climate Change Impacts in the Philippines” along with Dr. Crina Tañongon of UP Cebu.

The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) and The Japan Foundation, Manila solidified their collaborative ties through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on August 8, 2024. The event marked a significant milestone in the partnership that has been steadily growing over the past few months.
UPOU Chancellor Melinda Bandalaria and Dean Charisse Reyes of the Faculty of Education and Development (FED), together with JFM Director Tsutomu "Ben" Suzuki and Deputy Director Yojiro Tanaka, signed the document which aims to strengthen cooperation in language education, research, and cultural exchange.
Dr. Roberto B. Figueroa, Jr., UPOU Center for Open and Digital Teaching and Learning (CODTL) Deputy Director for Open and Digital Learning Research and Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OVCAA) Program Director; Dr. Myra C. Almodiel, Director of Office of Public Affairs (OPA); Ms. Margaret Jarmin-Suarez, OVCAA Program Development Associate for Institutional Linkages; and other representatives from JFM and UP Diliman also attended the event.
Both institutions are confident that this partnership will significantly promote Japanese language education in the Philippines and strengthen the cultural ties between the two countries.
Justin Kyle Marasigan completed his Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Studies (BAMS) program and graduated as Magna Cum Laude. Residing in Japan, he found that studying at the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) was the only viable path to achieving his academic goals. His experience at UPOU has contributed significantly to his career as a game designer in Japan.

Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Howell Ho, together with his team, were welcomed by Dr. Myra Almodiel, Director of UPOU Office of Public Affairs (OPA), and Dr. Ricardo Bagarinao, Director of UPOU Center for Open and Digital Teaching and Learning (CODTL). Visitors from TUA explored UPOU’s offering of microcredentials, student services, course development, and certification policies in distance education.
In line with RA 10650, the "Open Distance Learning Act," and its dedication to Sustainable Development Goals No. 4 (Quality Education) and No. 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), UPOU is vital in enhancing cooperation between institutions and organizations to ensure accessible, high-quality education and support collective progress in the educational field.

Included in the agenda was the presentation of the Bridge Program and Introductory Course on Contact Center Services (ICCS) offered by the Ugnayan ng Pahinungód UPOU. This was facilitated by Ms. Charlene Mina and Ms. Jestine Crhistia Gatdula, respectively.
Discussions on the future plans of DepEd and other possible partnerships between UPOU and DepEd Region 10 were made.
Other attendees include Assistant Regional Director Federico Martin, 10 Education Program Supervisors from Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD), and staff from Pahinungód UPOU.

It will be held on 23 July 2024 at 2 PM at the UPOU Sandbox and via Zoom.
Mr. Cheng Tju Lim, the country editor for the International Journal of Comic Art in Singapore, will be the Resource Speaker. He will share about the research process of writing comics and popular culture in Singapore, and the use of comics and creative non-fiction to tell life stories among others.
