Sulu, BARMM โ True to its mandate of inclusive delivery of social services for the Bangsamoro people, the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) called an assembly for persons with disability (PWDs) in Hadji Panglima Tahil town, this province, on 23 July 2024, in time with the observance of National Disability Rights Week (NDRW) 2024.
Forty PWDs gathered in the town hall and celebrated its uniqueness, diversity and productiveness through several activities highlighting their significant contributions in the society.
Select PWDs also received assistive devices such as wheelchairs, crutches and canes to enhance their mobility and independence.
Assistive devices are designed to assist a person to perform a particular task. Many PWDs depend on assistive devices to enable them to carry out daily activities and participate actively and productively in community life.
One of the highlights of the activity is the promotion and advocacy of the PWD Agenda to include in the policies and programs of the local government units. This was emphasized through lectures delivered by Dr. Jonah Raffiel Pagtalunan, a physician from Hadji Panglima Tahil Rural Health Unit and Mr. Suharto S. Hayudini, founder of the Association of Tausog with Disabilities.
The PWD-participants also received simple tokens, a gesture that showed the community's support and appreciation.
The celebration was further enlivened by a talent showcase, where selected PWDs demonstrated their skills and creativity, and by engaging parlor games that brought laughter and camaraderie among the attendees.
Mr. Saali H. Haril, municipal social welfare officer and PWD provincial focal person, emphasized that the โobservance is not just a celebration of NDRW but an advocacy campaign to recognize the contribution of each PWD in the society, promote inclusivity and strengthen their protections.โ
