Season of creation 2024
Dear friends of Laudato Youth! Happy World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation!
“Hope and Act with Creation” is the theme of the Day. This theme is drawn from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Romans (8:19-25), where the Apostle explains what it means for us to live according to the Spirit and focuses on the sure hope of salvation that is born of faith, namely, newness of life in Christ.
Let's pray and reflect on our carbon footprint and how we can make a positive impact this season of creation. Let's make a difference together!

Horticulture for the people | Davao Today I was invited to discuss horticulture, my first love. My interest in plants brought me closer to nature, a foundation on my environmental advocacies.
In the wake of the Maco landslide tragedy, the Provincial Government of Davao de Oro reports numerous casualties, missing individuals, and displaced families seeking refuge. We commend the immediate response and ongoing rescue operations. We must acknowledge that the root cause of such disasters lies in our failure to prioritize environmental conservation over profit. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for sustainable and responsible practices, urging us to rethink our position in large-scale mining and our approach to resource management for the well-being of both our environment and communities.
Fr. Karel S. San Juan, S.J.
University President

INVITATION | This year’s Season of Creation (1 September – October 4) celebrates the theme:“Listening to the Voice of Creation”. The voices of Mindanao, its watersheds and forests, the IP and local communities are drowned out by the noise of the mining agenda in Mindanao and the rest of the country.
Let the voices of DavOr’s people, watersheds and protected areas be heard!

Laudato Si!
September 1 is the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. This day marks the beginning of the Season of Creation celebrated by Christians worldwide. The Season closes with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4.
Join us in our University Mass this coming Thursday, September 1 at 11:30 AM. You may bring your office/home plant with you so that your green spaces may be blessed alongside the seedlings that will be blessed for our adopted areas and community gardens. We will also be distributing Season of Creation cloth masks.
The theme of this year’s celebration is: “Listen to the Voice of Creation”. The burning bush as symbol, reminds us of our planet on fire:
The forest fires blazing across Europe have razed down vast amounts of land on top of a heatwave, causing deaths to thousands with record temperatures at 45.7 C.
Pakistan is calling for international aid as it was left inundated by a monster monsoon where 3 million people have been displaced (of the 33 million affected) and where bridges, buildings (mostly built on the riverbanks), and crops have not been spared.
China has been experiencing a record-breaking 70 days of heatwaves and droughts affecting the stretch of the Yangtze river.
https://www.channelnewsasia.com/asia/china-drought-heatwave-yangtze-river-chongqing-photo-essay-2902056
In Mindanao, the climate crisis is exacerbated by the loss of forest cover in tens and thousands of hectares. Local communities are losing their homes to big mining companies who buy them out with promises. The IP community is divided, and so-called designated IP representatives have been pitted against the church in the long-drawn Tampakan campaign. In Barangay Ned, families are reportedly being bought out of their homes for a measly PhP 30,000.00 so that a giant conglomerate can mine their coal. In critical watershed areas and protected watershed and forest reserves, extractive ore and coal mining ensure a water crisis of epic proportions in the years to come.
Much of what is happening in Mindanao is happening in Davao in terms of disaster and “development” priorities that do more harm than good to the environment and public health and safety. Our rivers are threatened by unbridled quarrying, and our air quality and food safety are compromised by the WTE incineration project being pushed. Also, our city’s disaster resilience and food security are weakened by the reclassification of productive agricultural lands that give way to housing projects, even in flood mitigation areas.
Amidst the climate emergency, the “burning bush” reminds us of the holy fire that appeared before Moses. We are called by this holy fire to listen to the voices of Creation and community: the voices of suffering and the voice of collective wisdom and infinite gratitude, calling us to live within the limits of Our Common Home.
Let us listen and listen deep.
To the Voice of the Air: Let us enjoy our city parks on a fossil fuel-free ride in a Season of Creation Bike Ride as Ecoteneo Knightriders biking community of Ateneo (September 3. Matina Parking Building. Assembly time: 5:30 AM. Free registration: Sign-up sheets per campus are available through the Ecoteneo office.)
The Voice of our oceans and seas: Let us learn more about the coral reefs in Samal amidst the Samal Bridge Project through the SHS Flora and Fauna.
The Voice of our Forests (including mangroves): Let us grow our adopted mangroves with the Matina Aplaya Badjao community.
To the Voice of Biodiversity: Join the press conference on a rediscovered pair of Philippine Eagle by the Save MMACA Movement with PEF, IDIS, and UP Mindanao.
(1st week of September)
To the Voice of our Animal Friends: A Webinar and Saturday outreach with Bantay Hayop Davao, who has much to teach us about animal rescue and responsible pet ownership. https://www.facebook.com/bantayhayopdavao/
(every SoC Saturday)
The Voice of the Soil and organic farmers: Relaunch of the Friday Organic Market with the KNBL women farmers’ group of Davao who tirelessly push for eco-agriculture. (Sept-Oct: Garden of Eve)
To the Voice of Climate Action advocates in a Discovery Camp webinar: “Embracing Social Justice and Climate Action” with selected participants as organized by AIM and Arrupe Office of Social Formation
(Sept 14 :3 PM via Zoom)
The Voice of Water and our local and indigenous Communities: Pakighinabi on Davao Oriental’s protected areas and watershed vis-à-vis the mining projects with the Diocese of Mati and partner communities. Co-organized with the Office of the University President and UCEAC.
(Sept 27/28: Pakighinabi room and FB livestream)
Let us listen to the voice of our community (and partners) as we close the season with an ecumenical activity to be organized by the Grade School.
(October 4: Botanical Garden)
