DOG SEIZURES and SYMPTOMS

If you’ve ever seen a dog having a seizure, you were probably very alarmed. When a dog has a seizure, he usually falls down on the floor and may hold his legs stretched straight out from his body. He might also paddle his legs, depending on the situation, and he could run around in a panicked circle for a few minutes before falling over.
Remember: If your dog is having or has just had a seizure for the first time, write down all the details you can remember about it and schedule an appointment with your vet. And if you think your dog may have ingested something toxic that could have caused the seizure, get to an emergency vet right away. Otherwise, chances are good your dog may have epilepsy, which is common in canines.

SYMPTOMS OF DOG SEIZURES
1. Running in circles
2. Falling to the floor immediately, instead of laying down as usual
3. Twitching
4. Stiff muscles
5. Going completely unconscious
6. Being unable to look at you or anything else
7. Drooling
8. Biting
9. Urinating or defecating uncontrollably
10. Staring blankly, but remaining standing

Tips on how to Safely Cool Down Your Dog

It's important to carefully lower your dog's body temperature. Rapid cooling can cause even more problems.

1. First, move your dog out of the heat and into a cool, shady area that is well-ventilated.

2. Offer your dog cool water, but do not force water into your dog's mouth. Try not to let your dog drink excessive amounts at a time or he may start vomiting.

3. Take your dog's temperature rectally. Continue to recheck it ever five minutes to prevent overcooling. Do not take the following steps if your dog's temperature is under 104°F.

4. Begin cooling your dog's body using cool but not extremely cold water. You may place wet rags or washcloths on the footpads, around the head, on the abdomen, and in the armpits. Replace the cool towels frequently as they warm up. Avoid fully covering the body with wet towels as it may trap in heat. You can use a fan to help provide cool air

5. DO NOT use ice or ice water. Extreme cold can cause blood vessels to constrict, preventing the body's core from cooling and actually causing the internal temperature to rise further. Over-cooling can also cause hypothermia (low body temperature) leading to a host of new problems.

6. When the body temperature reaches 103.9°F, stop cooling. At this point, your dog's body should continue cooling on its own. If you keep trying to cool your dog, you risk hyperthermia.

7. Visit a veterinarian as soon as possible, even if your dog seems better.

What are the signs of heatstroke?
Dogs usually keep their body temperature at around 37-39°C, but as their internal temperature rises, particularly above 41°C, they start to show signs of heatstroke. The hotter the dog becomes and the longer their temperature stays high, the more damaged their tissue and organs become.

Signs of heatstroke can progress quickly and can include:

1. Heavy panting, even when not exercising
2. Breathing problems, particularly in flat-faced dogs
3. Tiredness
4. Stiffness or an unwillingness to move
5. Dribbling
6. Confusion
7. Being sick, can be bloody
8. Upset stomach, can be bloody
9. Not walking in a straight line
10. Collapse
11. Fitting

If you think your dog may have heatstroke it is vital that you immediately contact your vet while cooling them down. Getting early advice and treatment is essential to saving a dog’s life.
