Fig trees, also known as igos, are tropical plants in Asian countries like Taiwan and the Philippines. Previously, it was believed that fig trees could only spread their seeds through the animals that feed on their fruits or through freshwater currents. New research from the UPD-CS Institute of Biology (UPD-CS IB) shows that a fig tree called Mearns fig has seeds that can also disperse through oceanic currents, providing the first evidence of such a mechanism.
Dr. Lillian Rodriguez of UPD-CS IB and collaborators from Taiwan discovered that Mearns fig seeds can float in seawater for up to 21 days while still maintaining the ability to mature into plants. By riding oceanic currents, the Mearns fig seeds can travel long distances across multiple islands. This explains why Mearns figs found in Taiwanโs coastal areas are genetically related to those found on adjacent islands. In future studies, they hope to examine Mearn figs in the Batanes Islands and the Babuyan Archipelago, which may also be related to those in Taiwan.
