faculty Dr. Victor B. Ella, is the 2023 UPAA Distinguished Alumnus in Soil and Water Resources Management!

Dr. Ella completed his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering at UPLB in 1982 and since then, served the country in his field of specialization, Soil and Water Conservation Engineering and Watershed Management.

He received the award during the 2023 UPAA Homecoming and Awards Ceremony at Ang Bahay ng Alumni, Quezon City last 20 August, 2023.

Exactly 5 years ago today, our CHED-PCARI-WiSEIr collaborative research project between UPLB and UC Berkeley was officially started. Since then this project has contributed to the advancement of science and technology and in capacity building and has generated the following major accomplishments, amidst the pandemic:

• Developed a web-based water information system for efficient irrigation water management of upland and lowland crop production systems
• Developed a mobile application for efficient irrigation water management of upland and lowland crop production systems
• Developed a low-cost sensor for irrigation water management of upland crops
• Developed a low-cost sensor for irrigation water management of lowland crops
• Developed a water balance model for upland crop production systems
• Developed a water balance model for lowland crop production systems
• 14 Filipino thesis students supported (3 PhD, 8 MS, 3 BS)
• 2 US Postdoctoral fellows supported
• 6 papers and one poster presented in international scientific conferences
• 3 peer-reviewed papers published in WoS-indexed (ISI) journals
• 6 additional peer-reviewed papers accepted for publication in a Scopus-indexed journal

among many other accomplishments not to mention the employment of more than 30 people (researchers and laborers) in this project throughout the 4-year period.

Again, we would like to thank CHED for funding this project, our UC Berkeley research collaborators, the PCARI-PMCO and the various concerned administrative units of our University, and everyone who contributed to the successful implementation of this project.
