Pakinggan si Edita Burgos, ina ni Jonas Burgos na isang prominenteng aktibista para sa isang grupo ng mga magsasaka, desaparecido mula pa noong Abril 28, 2007, patungkol sa kanyang saloobin hinggil sa pagkawala ng anak, “𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘺… 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘧… 𝘋𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘦’𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦? 𝟮𝟬𝟳𝟴. Di bababa sa bilang na iyan ang mga dokumentadong kaso ng ‘enforced disappearances’ sa bansa mula noong batas militar hanggang Hunyo 2023, ayon sa datos ng Families of Victims of Involuntary Disappearance (FIND) (Gavilan, 2023).

Nito nga lamang ika-22 ng Agosto, pinakawalan ang environmental advocate na si Rowena ‘Owen’ Dasig matapos mabasura ang mga gawa-gawang kaso laban sa kanya, ngunit hanggang sa ngayon ay hindi pa siya nakakausap ng kanyang mga abogado at wala pa ring nakakaalam kung nasaan siya (Bolledo, 2024).

Karamihan, kung hindi lahat, ng mga desaparecidos ay mga aktibista, 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐠𝐚 𝐧𝐚𝐚𝐚𝐩𝐢 𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐢𝐤𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚 𝐧𝐠 𝐤𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐬𝐲𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐨𝐤 𝐧𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐚, 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐤𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐬𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐲-𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐚 𝐤𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐦𝐮𝐦𝐮𝐡𝐚𝐲. Walang takot at pag-aatubili nilang hinaharap ang kapulisan, militar, at mga private armies, silang walang pakundangan sa paggamit ng dahas, pananakot, at pandurukot para sa interes ng naghaharing-uri.

Ayon sa power-elite theory ni C. Wright Mills (1956), kinabibilangan ng pamahalaan, mga korporasyon at ng militar ang naghaharing uri na naglalayong kontrolin ang lipunan para sa pansariling interes, at hindi para sa ikauunlad ng sambayanan (Conerly et al., 2021). Isa lamang ang sapilitang pandurukot sa mga desaparecidos sa mga pamamaraan ng naghaharing-uri upang kontrolin ang lipunan. Palibhasa’y wala silang maitugon sa mga makatwiran at makataong panawagan, kundi pandurukot at dahas.

Ngayong 𝗶𝗸𝗮-𝟮𝟲 𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗴𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗼, ating alalahanin ang mga sakripisyong inilaan ng mga bayaning Pilipino para sa pagtaguyod ng kasarinlan at kapayapaan ng bansa laban sa mga mananakop at mapang-aping bansang umaangkin dito. 𝗜𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘄 𝗻𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝗴𝘀𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗻𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗮𝘆 𝗸𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗽𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗶𝗹 𝘀𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴-𝗮𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗮.

Sa kasalukuyan, hindi na lamang ang mga bayaning nagbuwis ng buhay ang dapat bigyang pugay, kundi maging ang mga makabagong bayani ng bansa na patuloy na naninindigan at nagtatanggol sa ating Inang Bayan sa gitna ng mga pagsubok at paghihirap. Mula sa mga OFW na nakikipagsapalaran sa ibang bansa para sa kanilang mga pamilya, hanggang sa mga mangingisda at magsasaka na walang tigil sa paglaban sa kanilang mga karapatan, at maging sa mga aktibista na hindi napapagod ipatambol ang adbokasiyang para sa bawat Pilipino, sa mga kabataan at mga estudyanteng walang sawang nakikibaka para sa kinabukasan, at sa mga mamamahayag na walang takot na isinisiwalat ang katotohanan sa likod ng madugong pulitika. 𝗔𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗮𝗸𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘆𝗼 𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗸𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗯𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗮 𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻, 𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗮 𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗵𝗼𝗻.

Sa pagkilala ng mga bayani sa araw na ito ay mahalagang kilalanin ang walang humpay na pagpili ng mga bayaning kumilos sa kabila ng pag-iral ng 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗸𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘆𝗮 na ipinapaliwanag ng Structuration Theory ni Anthony Giddens, dito nailalarawan kung paano lumalaban ang mga indibidwal sa kabila ng makapangyarihang impluwensiya ng sistema (Gibbs, 2024). Ang araw na ito ay hindi lamang isang pagkakataon upang magbigay-pugay sa ating mga bayani, 𝗸𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗮𝗸𝘀𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗸𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘆𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝘀𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗴𝗼 𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗴-𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗮𝗱 𝗻𝗮 𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘀𝗮 𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮. For now, 👀 let’s take a quick detour and delve into the 𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱/𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗚𝗘 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗘 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀.

The university takes pride in its Tatak UP General Education Program and it will not be a full ✨𝙐𝙋 𝙀𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚✨ without these courses.

A total of 𝟮𝟳 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗘 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 are required for every UPLB Student.

- 𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱/𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗚𝗘 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 (18 units)- a set of six (6) essential 3-unit courses that every student is required to enroll in as foundations for a well-rounded education.

- 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗘 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 (9 units)- a set of 11 diverse 3-unit courses exploring different arts and sciences topics. Each student must enlist in three (3) Elective GE courses that align with their interests and academic goals to enrich their learning experience.

Ang pagpasok ng administrasyon ng University of the Philippines (UP) System sa isang kasunduan kasama ang Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) ay isang 𝙩𝙖𝙝𝙖𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙖𝙜𝙙𝙪𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙖 𝙠𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙖𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙜-𝙖𝙠𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙠𝙤 𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙜𝙖 𝙣𝙖𝙨𝙖𝙨𝙖𝙠𝙪𝙥𝙖𝙣 𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙤.

Nitong ika-8 ng Agosto, nilagdaan ang UP-AFP Declaration of Cooperation na naglalayong magsimula ng pagtutulungan sa mga proyekto sa pananaliksik, pang-akademiko, at pakikipag-ugnayan sa komunidad sa pagitan ng UP System at AFP. Bilang isang institusyon na may mahabang kasaysayan ng paniniktik, red-tagging, at paglabag sa karapatang pantao, nakakikilabot kung ano na lamang ang mga maaaring igiit ng AFP sa mga programang ito. Isang napakalaking kabalintunaan na ang mismong UP admin, na siyang dapat unang magpoprotekta sa kanyang sangkaestudyantehan, kaguruan, at mga empleyado, ang siya pa mismong naging daan tungo sa maaaring lehitimasyon ng mga ganitong paniniiil.

Pagbali-baliktarin man at idaan sa pasikot-sikot na paliwanag, malinaw na 𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙠𝙖𝙨𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙪𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙮 𝙞𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙖 𝙨𝙖 𝙠𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙩𝙖𝙨𝙖𝙣 𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙠𝙖𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙮𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙝𝙖𝙣. Wala pang sampung araw nang pormal na malagdaan ang kasunduan, ilegal na inaresto ng kapulisan ang mga estudyanteng delegado sa 57th General Assembly of Student Councils (GASC) sa UP Tacloban matapos ang naganap na iglap-protesta sa Macdiola. Ngunit hindi mapapalabnaw ng mga ganitong panunupil ang tunay na damdaming makabayan.

Kaya, kasama ang UPLB Sociology Society sa patuloy na pagtutol sa militarisasyon sa loob ng pamantasan. 𝙐𝙙𝙮𝙪𝙠𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙙𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙨𝙮𝙤𝙣 𝙣𝙖 𝙢𝙖𝙨 𝙢𝙖𝙞𝙜𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙣𝙖 𝙞𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙥𝙖𝙙 𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙖𝙛𝙚 𝙃𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙖 𝙨𝙖 𝙠𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙠𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙣 𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙪𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙙! Sama-samang hamunin ang UP administration na alalahanin ang ugat nito at kung para kanino ba ito dapat nagsisilbi!
