Why is there an International Dog Day?

The holiday was founded by animal advocate Colleen Paige in 2004. Paige, who is also the founder of National Puppy Day and National Cat Day, created International Dog Day to celebrate all breeds, both purebred and mixed, and raise awareness about the plight of shelter dogs.
