+++ How sea anemones could heal sensorineural hearing loss in future +++

Did you know that sea anemones have hair cells like us? While ours are in the inner ear, the hair cells of the anemone are on its tentacles. 🐙👂

If the hair cells of the anemone are damaged, certain proteins help to repair those within a few hours. They are excreted as a mucus layer via the anemone’s skin.

Scientists investigate if those proteins could also be a healing opportunity for humans suffering from sensorineural hearing loss. Also, they want to look if our genes have the encoding for this protein. 🧬

+++ 5 Myths vs. Facts about Hearing Loss +++

1) “Hearing loss means that one doesn’t hear anything”
That’s wrong. Hearing loss means that one does not hear certain frequencies anymore. So, there are many different types of hearing loss. The most common one is the high frequency loss. In this case the consonants as “S” or “F” are often not heard.
2) “We only hear with the ears”
Yes, we hear with the ears but understand with our brain. The ears are the signal receivers and transform sound waves into electric impulses, which are transmitted to the brain, where they are being processed.
3) “People with hearing disorder also often have memory problems”
That’s right. Hearing disorder leads to decreasing cognitive abilities. According to studies hearing loss can accelerate senile dementia. This highlights the importance of hearing screening for detecting hearing loss early enough, so that the right measurements can be taken.
4) “Women are hearing better than men”
There are differences: Statistically seen men are about 10% more hearing disabled than women in an age of 60 to 80 years. But one does not see this number as a gender phenomenon. It is rather guessed that men were more exposed to noise.
5) “We get used to noise”
Yes, e.g., people who are living next to a noisy train station will get used to the noise so that they do not recognize it anymore. With this habituation our body is avoiding stress. Nevertheless, noise can have a negative impact on our health (tiredness, depressions, lower performance, and other diseases).

Things everyone should know about hearing tests:

A hearing test should be done regularly: This is the chance to detect hearing loss early and take the needed actions immediately.

There are several options where you can go for a hearing test: ENT doctor, hearing aid shop or audiologist.

Those steps await you during hearing test:

1. First, the doctor or audiologist will talk with you for knowing your complaints and backgrounds – e.g., if you work in loud surroundings.

2. The doctor will have a look in your ears.

3. With headphones on, the hearing test begins: Usually the doctor or audiologist starts with a tone test, where you should push a button when you hear the soft tone. The ears are tested one after another. Further tests could be done, like speech tests where you listen and repeat the words.

4. Additionally the eardrum and middle ear could be tested with a Tympanometer. During this test you don’t have to do anything for a short moment.

5. After all the doctor or audiologist will go through the results with you.

There is nothing to worry about: The hearing tests are quickly done and if some steps are too fast for you, just tell it. 😊

The first ones who could recognize acoustics were agnathans. With their auditory cells in the lateral line organ, they could detect water movement, what has helped them to orient. Out of this organ the inner ear – including cochlea and balance system – of the vertebrates has developed.

Nevertheless, those fish couldn’t really hear sounds. 260 million years ago reptiles were the first ones hearing sounds quiet well. They already had an ear drum as well as an ossicle relatable to ours. With those hearing organs they could hear like a today living lizard. Scientists explain that the former reptiles had an advantage over other animals thanks to hearing: They could for example go hunting when it was dark and occupied an ecological niche.

Mammals refined on this basis their hearing organs to their needs: the jaw joint of the lower vertebrates has evolved into ossicles and a new jaw joint has regenerated. Also, the outer ear has formed for bundling the sounds and many further parts of our hearing system. Scientists say that we humans are still aligning our hearing genetically to speech. 👂

Today’s International Noise Awareness Day is a reminder that noise damages our hearing as well as our health and quality of life. 🔊
Especially the inner ear and its hair cells are damaged by noise. The hair cells are responsible for transforming the sound signal to a nerve potential, that is processed in the brain.
When sound hits the hair cells they bend. Those cells need energy to unbend, which they get from blood circle. This energy supply is not enough anymore when noise influences over a longer time. The consequence is hearing loss caused by damaged hair cells, which cannot be replaced or rebuilt.
So, if you cannot avoid noise in some situations, we recommend you wear noise-cancelling headphones or earbuds.
