BINHI TEACHER TRAINING I: A DAY OF LEARNING AND CONNECTION

Despite the rainy weather, BINHI teachers from 19 partner sites came together last Saturday, August 10, 2024, for the first BINHI Teacher Training of the school year. The enthusiasm was unstoppable as teachers gathered to refresh their Science of Reading knowledge and pick up new skills crucial for their BINHI lessons.

The training kicked off with an insightful session on the Science of Reading, led by our long-time partner, Ms. Ma. Cecilia Q. Jocson of Reading Specialists. Following this, Ms. She Lorenzo, Ms. Izzah Caballero, and Ms. Miles Po from BINHI demonstrated the BINHI Kits teaching techniques. The session was made even more dynamic with the help of veteran BINHI teachers Ms. Leonor Cirera and Ms. Desiree Fronda from NAPICO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, who brought a BINHI lesson to life by blending what they’ve learned with their own creative teaching styles.

The day was truly memorable, thanks to the active participation and support of all the master teachers and educators who attended.

With our teachers now armed with fresh insights and skills, we can't wait to see the impact in the upcoming BINHI school year!

BINHI proudly supported selected partner sites during DepEd's National Learning Camp by connecting them with feeding program partners from RSPo Foundation through their Kain Po Program, Assissi Development Foundation through their Hapag-Asa Nutrition Program, and Scholars Of Sustenance Philippines - SOS Philippines .

This partnership provided meals for approximately 3,000 learners during the last week of the National Learning Camp. At BINHI, we believe that proper nourishment is closely linked to effective learning, and we hope to feed even more children in the future with the help of our dedicated partners. 🌱

Binhi English Literacy Foundation, Inc.

BINHI means “seed” in Filipino. True to its name, BINHI Foundation aims to inculcate seeds of education among marginalized Filipino children that will grow and bear fruits of empowerment and self-confidence. The foundation believes literacy can inspire the youth to dream big—as big as aspiring to become the country’s President whose one of the few qualifications is having the ability to read and write and rise above their economic status.

In the national public school system, there is a likelihood that the well-intention no child left behind policy overlooks the fact that some pupils move on to the next level without having fulfilled the reading benchmarks for their grade and age level. This results in primary school children who are unable to read, and consequently, fail in the other areas of learning where reading and comprehension are of core importance.

According to the 2016 Philippine Human Development Report, out of 100 children who enter grade 1, some 14 will have dropped out by Grade 2 and another 10 will have dropped out by grade 4; only about 65 will reach the end of grade 6. Children who are unable to read at the desired competency level (as compared to their peers) are likely to get discouraged and end up dropping out of school.

Their chances of finishing school are also further diminished by the lack of support from parents, who are either too tired from labor or just unequipped to help their children with school work. We can only feel sorry for the opportunities these children are missing. With the help of partners and sponsors, the BINHI English Literacy Foundation can help schools and communities focus on the crucial aspect of a primary school child’s education: the ability to read.
