Curated by Alain Zedrick Camiling and Gian Carlo Delgado, “About the patience of ordinary things” reflects on the concept of care in relation to aspects of everyday life through artistic expressions. The exhibit title comes from Pat Schneider’s 2005 literary work titled “The Patience of Ordinary Things” which acknowledges the nature of an individual object as itself together with its relation with other materials. The participating artists with their own practices render various gestures and materialities as part of the exhibition’s probing towards the concept of care.

ABOUT THE PATIENCE OF ORDINARY THINGS features works of Mars Bugaoan, Kristone Capistrano, Kat Grow, Maya Leon, Hershey Malinis, Julieanne Ng, Floraime Pantaleta, Veejay Villafranca, Jezzel Wee, and Gelo Zarsuelo.

ABOUT THE PATIENCE OF ORDINARY THINGS

July 6 - August 03, 2024

The concept of care is instinctual; it extends extrinsically and creates interconnectedness between ourselves and our experiences. In medical anthropology, Taylor (2008) argues that “recognition is inseparable from ‘caring’, and both can be understood as not just the interior emotional or intellectual states of individuals, but as practices, particular forms of activity, at once social, representational, and very concretely material.” Relating to care ethics, Garett (2007) emphasizes the idea of “web of relationships” over independent individualism. Such ideas suggest that both our being and our ability to care are shaped by diverse interconnected influences and contexts.

How does one perceive and express care through the use of objects and practices that inform such interconnections in the everyday? The exhibition proposes to reexamine care as an instrument that propels complex and fluid interconnectivities and capabilities through reflective, artistic, physical, and metaphorical expressions.

“Batang 90’s” brings the vibrant culture of the 90s back to life, featuring the toys, games, and TV shows that shaped a generation. The exhibition gathers an eclectic group of artists, each bringing their unique perspective to the nostalgic themes of the era.

Among them include Acidhead, who captivates with intricate leather etchings that blend traditional craftsmanship with contemporary themes. Astrid Anabo, a psychology professor and oil painter, transitions from photorealism to magical realism with a futuristic twist, exploring human psychology through animalistic representations of primal drives, influenced by Carl Jung’s theories. Anabo’s creative process involves digital concept rendering before transforming ideas onto canvas with oils or acrylics. And Node75, who reimagines popular characters like Homer Simpson and Mickey Mouse, infusing them with a hyperrealistic, street-inspired aesthetic that bridges the gap between nostalgia and modernity.

The exhibition features works by Acidhead, Astrid Anabo, Brook, Bryan Coroza, Camsy Valencia, Gabo Valenzuela, Jaycel Musnit, Marky Barredo, Nantz Matienzo, Nicolle Plamer, Sigwada Knicolai, and Valerie Teng. Revisit and reinterpret the 90s through the eyes of these talented artists, blending past memories with contemporary art forms.

BATANG 90’s will formally open to the public this Saturday, July 13, here at the Altro Mondo Creative Space.

‘The works in the exhibition cross from one story to another, from one idea to another, and from one temporal reality to another. It transcends from categories so it could spark a dialogue, one that cuts across cultures and eras. Yet, it is a dialogue that can be understood as it is spoken in the universal language of visuality, of art.’

Reflecting on the obsessive rendering of lines on the canvas, one discovers not merely a visual abstraction, but an intricate narrative—a whispered meditation on the essence of self and the boundless depths of human expression.

“I”, an introspective solo exhibition by Alfonso Recto, offers a captivating inquiry into the essence of individuality and creative expression. Through a series of 11 abstract paintings, Recto delves into the multifaceted nature of the self while symbolizing the act of making a mark as an individual within the competitive landscape of the contemporary art world.

At the heart of Recto’s artistic exploration lies the fundamental gesture, the mark “I” or the letter “I” or the Roman numeral “I”, which all serve as a visual motif and a symbolic representation of selfhood. Through repetitive short lines resembling this primal symbol, Recto creates a series of striking compositions that evoke a sense of raw authenticity and primal energy.

“I” is not merely an exhibition—it is an open invitation to join and immerse in Recto’s creative practice, his body of work, to contemplate the nature of existence, the journey of self-discovery, and the universal quest for meaning and transcendence.

The central piece, “Divina Commedia,” is a monumental work that encapsulates the artist’s creative vision and philosophical musings. Inspired by Dante Alighieri’s “The Divine Comedy,” Recto imbues the painting with layers of meaning, dividing its composition into three sections representing Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Through a serendipitous interplay of colors—black, red, and white—Recto navigates themes of suffering, purgation, and transcendence, embarking on a meditative journey of self-discovery.
