Do You See Better When You Tilt or Turn Your Head? 21/04/2022

Q: Why Does My Vision Improve When I Tilt or Turn My Head?

A: You may turn or tilt your head for any of the following reasons:
- Eye Misalignment (Strabismus)
- Duane Syndrome
- Nystagmus
- Ptosis
- Refractive Error

If you find that you're tilting or turning your head to see objects or read better, it’s important to schedule an eye exam to identify the cause of the problem.

Patients with ocular neurological problems may be experiencing some of these symptoms:

Eye strain, headaches or migraines
Eye turn or blurry vision
Reading or attention problems
Difficulty moving the eyes
Involuntary eye movements
Pressure in the eyes or head
Uneven pupils
Double vision
Droopy eyelids
Facial distortion

If your eye doctor suspects that your eye condition may be rooted in the nerves or the brain, they may recommend an appointment with a neuro-ophthalmologist, who is trained to diagnose and treat eye irregularities with a neurological cause.

Keratoconus is an eye disease that causes the cornea, the clear dome-shaped front surface of the eye, to become misshapen and bulge. This progressive disease usually occurs in both eyes and affects approximately 50-200 in every 100,000 individuals.

People who have keratoconus often experience problems like blurred vision, distorted vision, night blindness and sensitivity to light. Clear vision correction for keratoconus can be challenging to achieve because the irregular corneal shape makes it difficult or impossible for standard eyeglasses or contact lenses to provide you with sharp vision.

Thankfully, there are ways for people with keratoconus to achieve clear and comfortable vision, something we explore below, along with several other key points about keratoconus.

Here are 6 things to know about keratoconus:

Kids, like adults, are spending more time online. At some point during the COVID-19 pandemic, many children attended school via Zoom and completed assignments online.

The trend toward more screen time — whether playing games or being in touch with friends — is likely to continue even after everyone returns to the classroom.

The following tips can lessen the impact of screens on your child’s eyes:

1. Reduce overall screen time
2. Encourage frequent breaks
3. Use accessories that filter blue light (for example, blue light glasses)
4. Schedule regular eye exams

Children need comprehensive eye exams to assess the health of their eyes, correct their vision and spot potential problems which can affect learning and behavior.

If you are concerned about the effect of virtual learning and screen time on your child’s eyes, or if you're due for a checkup, schedule an appointment with your optometrist soon.

Have you ever gotten up from the table after enjoying a meal and noticed that things appeared blurry? If so, you may have experienced a temporary spike in blood sugar that affected your eyes.

If your vision is often blurred after meals, you should schedule a visit to your optometrist and general practitioner to rule out diabetes and other conditions.

Diabetes is characterized by excessively high blood sugar levels. In some people, it causes food to be digested faster than usual, leading to rapid spikes in blood sugar. Elevated blood sugar can lead to fluid to build ip in the eyes, resulting in blurry vision.

The eye’s natural crystalline lens and cornea are responsible for focusing light onto the retina for clear vision. The lens changes its shape to accommodate focusing on near or far objects. In some cases, when the eye swells die to excess fluid resulting from the high blood sugar, it temporarily doesn’t focus light with the same accuracy.

Foods that are high in sugar and other carbohydrates are most likely to cause blood sugar to spike. Some examples include:

1. White rice and pasta
2. Most breakfast cereals
3. Sugary sodas and beverages
4. Candies and baked goodies
5. Fruit juices

Temporary eyesight changes don’t always mean diabetes. Intermittent blurred vision can also be caused by other problems or conditions, including:

1. Migraines
2. Certain medications
3. Eye strain
4. Pink eyes (conjunctivitis)
5. Keratitis
6. Glaucoma
7. Macular degeneration

Many of these conditions will also present with symptoms other than blurred vision, so be sure to be open with your optometrist if you experience any unusual visual symptoms.

If you noticed blurred vision only following a high-carb meal, it may be worth tracking your meals and symptoms to try and find a pattern. This information will be valuable for your optometrist and other health care professionals.

If you’re concerned about temporary blurred vision after eating, or any other visual symptoms, contact us to schedule a comprehensive eye exam.

Sharing these helpful DOs and DONTs of Cosmetic Contact Lenses (from the US FDA)

1. Do get an eye exam! A licensed eye doctor will examine your eyes to make sure the contact lenses fit properly. The fit of your contact lenses is very important. A wrong fit can cause damage to your eyes. Be sure to always go for follow-up eye exams as instructed by your doctor.

2. Do get a prescription! All contact lenses should be prescribed by a doctor, including decorative lenses. The prescription should include the brand name, correct lens measurements and expiration date.

3. Do follow the contact lens care instructions! Follow the instructions for wearing, cleaning and disinfecting your contact lenses that come with your contact lenses. If you do not receive instructions, ask an eye doctor for them.

4. Do seek medical attention right away and remove your contact lenses if your eyes are red, have ongoing pain or discharge! Redness, pain and discharge from the eyes are signs of an eye infection. If you think you have an eye infection from your contact lenses, remove them and see an eye doctor right away.

Donts:

1. Don't share your contact lenses with anyone else! You wouldn't share your toothbrush, would you? All eyes are not the same size and shape and your contact lenses are fitted just for you.

2. Don't buy any contact lenses without a prescription! If you don't see an eye doctor and get a prescription, then the contact lenses you get may not fit properly and may not work well. They could even damage your eyes. Sometimes wearing contact lenses can damage the top layer of your eyeball (cornea). Even if you aren't having any problems now, the lenses still could be causing damage to your eyes. By having regular checkups and buying contact lenses with a prescription, you will reduce the chances of any undetected damage to your eyes.

Contact lenses are medical devices that are safe when properly prescribed and used correctly.
