After finishing her art studies at the University of the Philippines and leaving the country on a scholarship to Spain, Nena Saguil decided to live and settle in Paris for the rest of her life, effectively isolating herself from the local art scene. In Paris, she developed a distinct style that referenced the cosmos and constellations. These works, laboriously drawn and executed over decades, had an impact on her vision -- she was nearly blind when she dies in Paris in 1994 -- and evoked cosmic spaces and spiritual universes, dappled with myriad dots, circles, and whirling vortices.

The fact that they are all men makes it a unique work, as she rarely depicted male figures. Saguil's figurative works from 1950s are rare and therefore difficult to find on the market.

The recently departed Araceli Limcaco Dans, affectionately known to the art community as "Cheloy,” has left her country with a legacy of exquisite artworks in all mediums, all expressive of her disciplined hand in limning the details of her images. She trained under the mentorship of the National Artist Fernando Amorsolo, who, seeing that her skill and talent were so advanced, allowed her to finish a four-year Fine Arts degree course in a mere three years.

She is of course renowned for her favored subject matter, the calado, our native lace-like embroidery, which in her hands reached a quality best expressed by her friend, National Artist for Dance, Leonor Orosa Goquingco: “a perfection in itself, the epitome of elegance.”

Mauro Malang Santos was born in Santa Cruz, Manila where he learned about art as early as 10 years old under the teaching of Teodoro Buenaventura. He proceeded to finish only one semester in the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts before working in the art department of the Manila Chronicles. Through his apprenticeship under Liborio "G*t" G*tbonton inspired and created his original comic strip, Kosme the Cop, Retired.

In 1962, Malang had his first solo exhibition featuring cartoon works on white background. In 1991, he held an exhibit that shifted his career as he moved away from his usual comic and cartoons to abstract and cubist styles depicting everyday people such as market vendors and the local slums. Malang would constantly work with different media, colors, and his vast and vivid creativity only continued to grow as he grew older. In 2007, he exhibited 78 works

Emmanuel Garibay's art is fortified by his innate instinct to evoke a subliminal narrative, which enriches the figures and characters in his works as genuine reflections of real people. He is the son of a Methodist pastor, and he has integrated the religious element into his art, which enables him to explore the psyche of the individual. The working class, the unwashed and starving masses that grovel at the mercy of their social superiors and the political leaders who, in their ignorance and easy propensity to be bribed, have been placed in positions of power, is his favorite subject.

Angelito Antonio is a modernist who studied under Vicente Manansala and Galo Ocampo from the University of Santo Tomas. He was a number of accolades including the AAP Annual Art Competition in 1963 and 1964. He was exhibited his works locally, and abroad, in New York and Saigon.

His work entitled Mananahi shows an older style of the artist. His use of yellow and blue atop each other to fill the work with green, the primary colors are shown emphasis throughout the figurative abstraction of a genre scene.

National Artist of Visual Arts Jose Joya was the first to graduate with a magna cm laude from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts under the tutelage of National Artists Fernando Amorsolo and Guillermo Tolentino. He broadened with knowledge and placement in the art world by studying in Europe and eventually the United States.

During his time abroad, he was exposed the American artists and their modern and abstract ideals that were much different to what he learned under Amorsolo and Tolentino. He began to experiment on creating dynamic pieces through the new styles and techniques he interpreted from the current movement through the works of Jackson Po***ck and other abstract expressionists.

Mauro 'Malang' Santos was known for his 'Kosme the Cop, Retired' comic strip, which appeared in the Manila Chronicles. His introduction to color came late in his career as an artist. Reportedly, Vicente Manansala advised him to use colors to highlight his works after his first solo exhibition in 1962 of his comics. He began incorporating color and cubist techniques in the 1990s.
