Today, we celebrate the birthday of our national hero, Jose Rizal.đŸ‡”đŸ‡ He was a doctor, a writer, and a farmer. It’s a little known fact that during the first year of his exile in Dapitan, Rizal himself took up farming and cultivated the land.🌿

Jose Rizal bought 16 hectares worth of abandoned land from different landowners and slowly increased the size of his property over the years. With help from some pupils and laborers, Rizal cleared his lands to plant cacao, coffee, coconut, and various fruit trees.🌳 In just half a year he was able to plant five thousand pineapples, over one thousand coffee plants, and two hundred cacao trees. When he bought more land, he planted corn and six thousand abaca plants.☀

Jose Rizal’s vast, rocky, and fertile farmland was located beside a wide and rushing river which provided clear freshwater, fish, and edible ferns. During his time in Dapitan, he introduced modern ways of farming that he learned from his travels to Europe and America.đŸŒ€He taught farmers about crop rotation, the uses of fertilizer, and even imported machines that would help in the farm.

In a letter to his sister, Lucia, on February 12, 1896, Rizal said: "We cannot all be doctors; it is necessary that there would be some to cultivate the soil."🙏

THE JOY OF CARING
At the heart of Volunteerism
Tony Meloto
December 12, 2023

Today, as we celebrate National Volunteers Day with the Department of Agriculture led by Honorable Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, I am deeply privileged to honor the greatness of the Filipino Heart and Spirit.

This event recognizes the heroic sacrifice of ordinary Filipino partner-volunteers who have helped improve the lives of farmers and fisherfolks, turned wastelands into abundance and protected the environment from degradation and abuse.

We congratulate you for your well-deserved award as we thank you for your selfless sacrifice and true Bayanihan spirit in sharing your time, talent and treasure because you genuinely care for our country and our materially-less countrymen surviving in our land and seas.

Volunteers are the unsung heroes in our country.

You volunteer for love, not for material or political gain.

You find joy in serving our country and caring for the less fortunate and our wasted natural resources.

You find courage in your faith in God and your love for our country serving under dangerous circumstances in dangerous territories.

You transform the lives of many even when your pocket is empty because your heart is full.

I recall clearly as I turn 74 that I experienced the greatest joy in my life serving God and and Country as a volunteer, not seeking money, power and glory in business and politics.

Love for God and Family was my greatest motivation in spreading Couples for Christ, starting in 1985, throughout the Philippines and in over 100 countries abroad. I did it joyfully without counting the cost because I valued God's beautiful plan for my marriage and family life. It strengthened the bond of my own marriage as my wife served with me joyfully and passionately globally to help strengthen Christian marriage and family. The thought that we may have helped save thousands of troubled marriages fills my heart with delight that no material wealth can equal.

Love for my children was our driving force in starting Kids for Christ, Youth for Christ and Singles for Christ thirty years ago. Now we can only be grateful to God that in serving the children of others, we ourselves have been blessed with five purpose-driven children and twelve delightful grandchildren.

Love for the poor was the trigger for me to brave the dangerous slums of Bagong Silang to start one of the biggest NGOs in the world - Gawad Kalinga. In taking care of the children of the poor, God took care of my children and made the slum communities around them safer.

Gawad Kalinga is not my personal achievement, contrary to the glory bestowed on me internationally being the face of the movement. I was merely the instrument of the amazing plan of God to unleash the faith and patriotism of millions of6 volunteers and partners in building 3,000 empowered6 communities through selfless caring and sharing.

Gawad Kalinga was volunteerism at its best. It brought out the best in our shared humanity as many foreigner-volunteers took time off from work and studies to help us build a fairer, safer and happier world.

Now in my final faith journey, God has blessed me with the joy of serving the less fortunate farmers and the elderly in our community in San Jose, Batangas.

During the Taal eruption, we gathered the wives and children of farmers to volunteer at Paraiso Village Farm, in cooking and distributing healthy plant-based meals to a thousand evacuees every day for two weeks.

During the three-year Covid Pandemic, we helped farmers produce and market their harvest every week to the affluent villages in Metro Manila and Laguna. Part of the income helped fed the hungry indigent elderly in our surrounding communities.

When our passion comes from God's purpose for us to care for others as volunteers, we will simply be amazed at our own strength and perseverance.

We discover the best in our humanity in the worst of times.

Now, we are able to bring happiness to the lonely elderly at Paraiso every Sunday as they pray, play and party like children again. Happy people live longer. It is our joy to add joy to their years and years to their joy.

We also gather and spread the merrymaking to hundreds of elderly every month in Payatas and Sitio Ruby in Quezon City and several towns in Batangas.

We just had the happiest Christmas celebrations this December for over a thousand Senior Citizens in Metro Manila and Batangas with an overflow of food, fun and faith - faith that God will not abandon them in their old age through the many volunteer-angels he sends.

Let me end this with a Christmas wish.

May God bless you with a long life of happiness and success in your selfless desire to make this world simply better - as a volunteer-angel of our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Thank you Silverde Mancom for helping learners from a last mile school in KlikME Sulu.
Also now supporting the LSGH ALS scholars, our legacy lives on for our 45th anniversary, Feb 3, 2024. ANIMO

"The KLIKme Learning Center is located in Kasambuhan, Indanan where former MNLF Commander Khaid Ajibon resides and where Jainab used to go in the early 2000s for Sulu UN peacebuilding efforts. The DepEd Sulu provided an unused classroom there beside the Kasambuhan Elementary School for the ALS-KLIKme Learning Center.

ïżŒThis structure was refurbished by our KLIKme Facilitator, learners and partners.

ïżŒThe classroom was in bad shape when it was turned over to KLIKme. Abdel mobilized the learners to clean and repaint it (thanks to Jenny Baylon for the paint donation). Abdel used his meager KLIKme allowance to buy the two electric cieling fans.

We finally got internet connection for the KLIKme Sulu community! Thanks to the Good Looking Gentlemen of LaSalle Greenhills Batch 79 (LSGH 79) SILVERDE , KLIKme Sulu will soon be enjoying Starlink internet connection! Thank you!"

The Sulu learners have been making do and struggling with their own data connections in the last few months since KLIKme started. Now they will be connected with the world and the learning resources and income opportunities out there. "

Yes Coach Jong is a humble man.
Animo Silverde

PBA WINNINGEST COACH & GILAS ASST. COACH TIM CONE ON COACH CHOT & JONG:"I DONT RUN CHOT'S SYTEM, What I try to do is to make sure the players are fundamentally sound"..

Cone, the winningest coach in PBA history with 24 titles to his name and the only mentor to win a Grand Slam with two different ballclubs, has reunited with Reyes after working together nearly a decade ago.

Together, Cone and Reyes led Alaska to its first PBA championship in 1991.

Amid the competition, however, was born a strong bond between the two coaches.

“Chot and I worked together for many years, with Alaska and the Centennial Team together and then back when he was national coach in the mid-2000s. Our wives are best friends and they work together in their own business. The connection is really strong between Chot and I,” said Cone.

He is also thrilled to work with Uichico, who led the Kings to a couple of championships in the mid-2000s.

“I got the opportunity to work with Jong during the Southeast Asian Games three years ago. I’ve always watched Jong from afar and he’s a Ron Jacobs protege and Ron was the absolute legend. He’s almost like a god in basketball. Getting to know Jong kinda lets me see what Ron used to do. I’m really fortunate to know both of them,” said Cone.

“I don’t run Chot’s system offensively. I don’t run the dribble drive, so I don’t know the dribble drive well. So for me to coach the dribble drive, it’s kinda silly. I mean Chot knows it more than I do. Josh (Reyes) knows it more than I do. I’m kinda learning it as I go along,” said Cone.

“What I try to do is to make sure the players are fundamentally sound and take a look at what the fundamental details they’re doing. So my contribution is probably more on the defensive side. I pride myself in our own defense at Ginebra through the years.”

“Jong is the lead scout. He’s the one who studies the other teams, presents our schemes and what we’re going to do. I kinda help Jong a little bit there, but that’s really his baby," he said.

“We all get along extremely well. Jong is super humble. He reminds me a bit of [Miami Heat coach] Erik Spoelstra, how humble he is. So we get along really well. I’m not the kind of guy who wants to put my imprint on things. I’m very willing to take the background and sit in the backseat."

“I don’t need to be the driver. I do a lot of driving with Ginebra and that’s a lot already. Ginebra is a special case. I’m very happy to stay in the background and lend support whenever I can. So I think it works out. It’s not just the three of us trying to be the man. We’re not. Jong is super humble and will never try to be the man. I’m not the kind of guy who’ll try that stuff either. This is really Chot’s team. We’ll just support him.”

"Let's start this Undas (All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day). One reason why the President declared October 31 a special non-working holiday is so that we will have more time to spend with our families and plan our vacation. Let us GO local & visit our love ones & amazing tourist destinations.

Tourism can revitalize the economy because improving existing tourist spots and developing new ones will open more businesses, which in turn will provide more local employment opportunities.

' 79 BIG brother Raoul Romulo of SMC Infrastructure is stepping up efforts to improve accessibility to areas with a high potential for tourism, business & economic growth. The more that they are accessible, the more people will be enticed to visit and pour in money to the provinces.

In Real Estate, it's about Location, location & location. But today in Social Development, it's about 'Connection, connection, connection.
