Title : LA GUERRA DE FILIFINAS 1886 - 1898. {SOLD}

This is an issue of Desperta Ferro, a prestigious journal of military history, dealing with the beginning and end of the Philippine War from 1886 to 1898. It includes maps, photographs, and illustrations. Pages that are glossy. In full color.
With eight articles written by Historians.

FROM THE SPANISH TRANSLATION :

On July 23, 1896, Andrés Bonifacio proclaimed, in what became known as the Balintawak cry, the beginning of the Philippine insurrection against the Spanish colonial power. The rebellion did not arise from remote places, but from Manila and its surrounding territories, at the hands of enlightened men, such as José Rizal, and petty officials, such as Andrés Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo. Throughout these pages we will explain how it spread to put Governor Blanco in check, what the Katipunan was and who formed it, how Governor Polavieja took the offensive to defeat an enemy that was determined, capable of building immense field fortifications that often had to be taken by means of the cold steel of bayonets, and how Governor Primo de Rivera, the third in twelve months, would put an end to this first phase of the Philippine War. A deceitful end and a peace agreement that would soon be frustrated and that would engender an even worse war that would end up alienating the archipelago from the hands of both contenders, Spanish and Filipinos, in the heat of the recent US imperial ambition unleashed with the War of Cuba. ."

Brown Heritage: Essays On Philippine Cultural Tradition And Tradition

"Brown Heritage was envisioned to fill the need to place Philippine literature within the context of a tradition born of the unique Philippine experience; an effort to examine and evaluate the cultural antecedents which conditioned literary form in the Philippines, thereby hopefully alleviating the Filipino's helpless loneliness and]\rage of the man without a past." - Editor

" The book was the first scholarly attempt to lay out the guidelines for the study of Philippine Literature and establish the critical norm by which it is judged. (Brown Heritage covered the Philippine writing in both the vernacular and in English, but its treatment of vernacular writing, although the first of its kind, was schematic rather than profound, and its chief contribution was in the field of Philippine writing in English...This book is one of the landmark of research into Philippine writing in English." - Philippine Studies No. 32 : The early tradition : Philippine writing in English 1910-1940. FIESTAS EN MANILA ANO 1825

Ferdinand VII, in order to reward the Philippine Islands for the constant loyalty they had always shown him [...] sent a portrait, specially painted by his first chamber painter Vicente Lopez, as a gift to the city of Manila and asked for the portrait to be treated as if it were His Majesty.

In accordance with the king's wish, the portrait was received in public in Manila and only entered with all honors as if it were the monarch himself. Of this solemn and triumphal entrance of the portrait of Fernando VII, and of the festivities that were organized with such a lavish motive, a series of watercolor plates and a brochure are kept in the palace library that narrates this curious event. These plates show fascinating documentation of civic and residential buildings before it was destroyed by earthquake and wars.

Manila 1571 - 1898 Occidente en Oriente by Javier Aguilera Rojas

The desire to recover the common Hispanic-Filipino past is what has embarked on the same ship the different entities and people who participated in this exhibition. Conceived as a round trip from the Bay of Cádiz to the China Sea, the route followed is the one that the galleons of the Carrera de Indias carried out until the beginning of the 19th century. A long journey with a stopover in the American continent, opened by the determination and discovery of pilots and navigators, and consolidated by advances in shipbuilding, cartography and navigation techniques. The capital of the Philippine Archipelago, on the border of Asia, was between 1571 and 1898 a meeting point between Western Europe and Eastern culture.

On the primitive Maynila, an orderly city emerged at the end of the 16th century, drawn according to the checkerboard model implanted by the Spanish in the American continent. Inside and outside its fortified enclosure, along with the first stone buildings erected by the new settlers, the traditional indigenous cane and nipa farmhouse survives to contemporary times. At the same time, the combination of influences and constructive systems from Asia and the West gives way in the Islands to a singular architecture and a peculiarity of the decorative arts, which is illustrative of the fusion of trends.

QUAINT CORNERS OF ANCIENT EMPIRES: SOUTHERN INDIA, BURMA AND MANILA

Excerpt from Quaint Corner of Ancient Empires: Southern India, Burma, and Manila:

"F making many books there is no end may already be said concerning this Spanish American war, but, so far, no apology is needed for presenting to our public any work upon the Philippines.

If an increase of the army is demanded for these islands it will not be long before every State in the Union will have men there in whom they are directly interested, and the theatre in which those soldiers must play their parts, and perhaps end their lives, cannot but be Of interest to those left behind them, especially to their wives, mothers, and sisters.

Therefore I venture to think that the following account Of the city Of Manila with its surroundings will prove acceptable. If it helps the women who wait, and who in so doing fight the hardest Of all battles, to tide over any Of the weary hours, it will have more than accomplished its purpose."

Gilt-lettered, decorated blue cloth binding. 212 pages. Contents clean and tight. Illustrations were produced from etching a plate through an intaglio process and producing a print from it.

FOR SALE : The Brownies in the Philippines.

The Brownies in the Philippines was written by a Canadian named Palmer Cox and published by The Century Company, which was based in New York.

Brownies, like fairies and goblins are imaginary little sprites who are supposed to delight in harmless pranks and helpful deeds. They work and sport while weary households sleep, and never allow themselves to be seen by mortal eyes.

Cox uses the putative 'harmless' characters from Scottish mythology to portray Americans observing the Filipino people and attempts to bring the Philippines into the American consciousness by depicting in cartoon illustrations its traditions, values, and ways of life :

The Brownies on Mindoro The Brownies on Palawan The Brownies on Mindanao The Brownies on Romblon The Brownies on Tawi Tawi The Brownies in Albay ...... and many other destinations.

LUCY HERNDON CROCKETT BOOKS :

Lucy Herndon Crockett was an American novelist and artist who illustrated her own books. She lived in the Philippines while her father was serving as an advisor to Governor-General Theodore Roosevelt Jr., an experience that fed into two of her earliest two books, Lucio and His Nuong (1939) and That Mario (1941):

1. Lucio and his Nuong A tale of the Philippine Island – is a children's book illustrated by Lucy Herndon Crockett that was published in 1939 "Thus, in the sleepy province of Pangasinan, lived the family of Mansala, and they were all proud of Lucio, who alone could manage the Nuong." This is the story of Lucio and His Nuong. The book is 9 1/8" by 11 7/8" and has about 60 or 70 pages with four-and five-color illustrations on nearly every page accompanying the tale. Text and pictures are clean and bright. The binding is tight and the corners and edges are good. The book is without a dust jacket. First Edition 1939.
Price : P4,500

2. That Mario – A humorous tale of a 10-year old Philippino boy who takes a trip to Manila, and learns for the first time that he has to exert himself to get along in life and to keep out of trouble. A rollicking yarn, full of excitement. Suggests Mouseknees in style and tempo, and the background of tropical life and tropical philosophy links the Caribbean and the Pacific islands. Crude black and white drawings appropriate to the text. Henry Holt and Co. 1940. Very Good Condition. First Edition

FOR SALE : Little Brown Brother By

The book is an eye-opener not just for Filipinos but for Americans as well, most of whom had grown up believing the American seizure of the Philippines, along with Cuba and Puerto Rico, before the turn of the last century was done with the noblest of intentions and wrought through the most benign of intrusions. The original title of the book was "Little Brown Brother: The Forgotten American Bid For Empire Which Cost 250,000 Lives," which was eventually shortened. The subtitle pretty much sums up what the book is about. The 250,000 lives were of course the Filipinos', the American occupation force, as in Iraq more than a century later, suffering few casualties.

Wolff's book told not just of the way a good portion of the new colony's population was wiped out but of the way the entire population's memory was wiped out. The first claimed only 250,000 lives, the latter the souls of nearly every inhabitant of the island.
-daily inquirer-

Little brown brother is a slang term used by Americans to refer to Filipinos during the period of U.S. colonial rule over the Philippines, following the Treaty of Paris between Spain and the United States, and the Philippine–American War.
