Last August 20, 22, and September 2, Dr. Marites P. Melancon, this year's DOST Balik Scientist, hosted a 3-day series of lectures in "𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐤𝐚 𝟐.𝟎 : 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐕𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬". Lectures on biomaterials for vascular applications, liver cancer, and prostate cancer were given by her mentees Dr. Allan John R. Barcena, Dominic Karl M. Bolinas, and Dr. Raniv D. Rojo, respectively.

Why do individuals with alcohol use disorder persistently seek and drink alcohol despite negative consequences? What neural mechanisms are responsible for these behaviors?

Dr. Andrew Holmes shared his latest research addressing these questions in his talk, “Brain mechanisms underlying emotion dysregulation and alcohol abuse,” held at the Henry Sy Sr. Medical Sciences Building, UP College of Medicine (UPCM) last July 16, 2024.

𝐃𝐫. 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐰 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐦𝐞𝐬 is a Senior Investigator at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institute on Health-US, where he heads the Laboratory of Behavioral and Genomic Neuroscience. His talk is the fourth installation of the UP National Institutes of Health (UP-NIH) Neuroscience Seminar Science. This was the first in-person talk of the series, organized in partnership with the UPCM MD-PhD Program.

The program commenced with the opening remarks given by Dr. Leslie Dalmacio, Vice Chancellor for Research and Coordinator of the MD-PhD Program. Dr. Rohani Cena-Navarro, Assistant Professor at the UP-NIH and head of the seminar series, moderated the talk.

After the program, MD-PhD students who attended had the chance to discuss building a career in neuroscience with Dr. Holmes over lunch. Dr. Holmes then visited the UP-NIH Animal Facility, where neuroscience research projects are conducted under the “Novel Approaches to Treatment of Addiction and Depression using Animal Models” Program, supported by the DOST-PCHRD. This research program hosts two MD-PhD students and is led by Dr. Navarro.
