CEIS SHS Manila Commission on Elections

January 22, 1987 — The Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) marched towards Malacanang demanding land reform for the sake of the country's farmers. On this same day, 37 years ago, the Philippine state security forces under the command of former President Corazon Aquino were violently dispersed which resulted to the loss of 13 defenseless protesters and 50 injured protesters.

37 years later, justice for the victims, survivors, and their families is still elusive. More so, to think that the Filipino farmers are still victims to the prejudice deeply rooted in the system is truly disheartening.

We, the CEIS Commission on Election, stand with our farmers. Their voices shall not remain unheard nor silenced, but honored and listened to.

There are only a few days remaining before the set franchise consolidation deadline of the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) modernization program. Despite the christmas season, many drivers and operators out there are filled with thoughts of uncertainty if they could continue their livelihood due to the said consolidation. They have been participating in a continuous strike for several days to persistently oppose the corporate-driven franchise consolidation December 31 deadline, which could potentially lead to the elimination of nearly 70,000 PUVs and approximately 200,000 job losses by the beginning of 2024.

Jeepney drivers and operators do not have the financial means to afford the modernized jeepneys that was demanded by the government. Modern jeepneys typically have an approximate cost of around P2.8 million, specifically for the year 2023. On the other hand, traditional jeepneys generally range from P200,000 to P400,000 in terms of cost. The responsibility for covering this amount will fall on the operators and jeepney drivers, which may surpass the financial capacity of a regular 'tsuper' who solely relies on their earnings from driving a jeepney. Additionally, the phase-out will not only impact the transport workers, but also the commuters, as the available accommodation for thousands of passengers in a day may not be sufficient. The privatization of the traditional jeepneys may potentially lead to fare increases, which could have a consequence on students and individuals who earn minimum wage in the Philippines.

Traditional jeepneys have long been regarded as the iconic symbol of transportation in the Philippines for numerous decades. Modernization is constant and necessary, yet resonating with our experiences and transport workers’ livelihoods, jeepneys should not be completely eradicated from the roads. When considering both perspectives, it is important to acknowledge that the livelihoods of local transport workers and the rich cultural heritage of the country would be affected. The culture that has long brought vibrant experiences and a strong sense of identity to Filipinos should be cherished and preserved amidst the constant changes of time.

December 8th - On this day, we honor the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. 🍃

The Immaculate Conception was the beginning of our salvation and is currently one of the central doctrines of our faith. Due to this, we celebrate the Feast Day to highlight the significant place Our Lady has in salvation history. 🙏

This encourages us to do our best to remain free from sin. It serves as a reminder that if we cooperate with God ‘s grace, as did the Blessed Virgin Mary, we can lead a life as free from sin as is humanly possible. 💫
