We are deeply saddened to announce the loss of Philippine Eagle 'Uswag'. His carcass was retrieved afloat on the waters of Ponson Island in Pilar, Cebu.

Uswag’s tragic death is believed due to an accidental crash landing on the sea.

This case of Philippine eagles crash-landing accidentally at sea is the 9th documented case since 1984.

The Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) - BARMM celebrates World Wildlife Day 2022 today, March 3, to recognize the world’s wild animals and plants and raise awareness of their conservation and protection.

This year, we join other nations globally in carrying the theme “Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration”, which highlights the conservation status of the world’s critically endangered wildlife and urges us to engage in discussions that seek to create solutions for their conservation and protection.

The BARMM is one of the regions in the Philippines that offer the most in terms of biodiversity. The forests, water bodies, and wetlands in the Bangsamoro provide the much needed habitat for its wild flora and fauna, even the critically endangered ones that are threatened by habitat loss, poaching, and hunting. It’s important to stress that continued loss of habitats and wildlife threaten the entire ecosystem as well. This becomes an issue for the communities that rely on biodiversity-based resources to meet their basic needs such as food, fuel, housing, medicines, and clothing, and boost their livelihood and economic opportunities.

Working towards the recovery of endangered species and consequentially restoration of the ecosystem, we will be able to support the sustainable purpose of these wildlife and resources. As provided in the Bangsamoro Organic Law, the Bangsamoro Government, through the MENRE, shall give priority to the protection, conservation, and development of natural resources that will support ecological balance and biodiversity conservation in the region.
