Congratulations to Alvann Walter Paredes Dy and the entire Philippine team for their historic achievement at the 17th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), held from August 17 to 27, 2024, in Vassouras, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! Alvann received an honorable mention, contributing to the national delegation's impressive tally of four awards.

Alvann had already made history as the first Judenite to participate in the IOAA. With this recent success, he now joins the ranks of distinguished Judenites who have excelled in multiple major international Olympiads. Steven Reyes earned silver in both the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) and the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), while Stefan Marcus Ong secured a silver in the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) and a bronze in the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). Remarkably, Alvann is the first Judenite to win two awards in the same year, having claimed his second bronze medal at the IMO last July.

This year also marks a significant milestone for the country, with Mohammad Nur Casib bringing home the first-ever gold medal. Sean Ken Galanza added a bronze medal, while Yanna Lorraine Tenorio received an honorable mention. Elaiah Asperin rounded out the five-member team. SJCS Trainers' Guild Coordinator, Mr. Russel Odi, served as one of the team leaders alongside Mrs. Bhazel Pelicano. The rest of the delegation hailed from the Pisay system.

Once again, congratulations, Alvann! A huge kudos to all members of the Philippine team for their outstanding performance.

Monica, the mother of Saint Augustine, was born in 332. She spent her childhood in innocence and piety before being married to Patritius, a pagan. From the outset, Monica dedicated herself to his conversion, praying fervently and demonstrating the holiness of her life through affectionate forbearance. Her prayers were answered when Patritius was baptized a year before his death.

When her son Augustine strayed from the faith and adopted a pagan lifestyle, Monica's prayers and tears became unceasing. She once pleaded with a learned bishop to speak with Augustine in hopes of bringing him to a better path. The bishop, though, declined, doubting his ability to influence someone as intellectually gifted and stubborn as Augustine. Yet, upon witnessing Monica's persistent prayers and tears, he assured her to take heart, saying, "It is not possible that the child of such tears should perish."

Augustine tried to escape his mother's persistent concerns by moving to Italy, but he could not escape her prayers, which surrounded him like the providence of God. Monica followed him to Italy, where he eventually came under the influence of Saint Ambrose. Through Ambrose's guidance, Augustine experienced a profound conversion, turning Monica's sorrow into immense joy.

On their journey home, as they sat together in Ostia, Monica turned to Augustine and said, "Son, there is nothing now I care for in this life. I no longer know what I should do or why I am here. The one reason I desired to remain a little longer in this life was to see you become a Catholic Christian before I died. God has granted me this wish in abundance, for I have seen you forsake earthly happiness to serve Him. What more is there for me here?"

A few days later, Monica fell ill with a fever and passed away in the year 387.

Continuing Saint Jude Catholic School's winning streak, Shaun Mannix A. Yap of SHS 12D proudly brought home two bronze medals from this year's International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO), held in Beijing, China from August 7 to 17, 2024.

In the individual round, which included a rigorous written test and a practical examination, Shaun earned his first bronze medal, falling just half a point short of the silver medal cut-off.

His second bronze came from the International Team Field Investigation, where he collaborated with students from Austria, France, Macao, and New Zealand, showcasing his teamwork and fieldwork skills.

Shaun is now the third Judenite to achieve a podium finish at the IESO, following in the footsteps of Charles Tiu, who won silver in 2011, and Stefan Marcus Ong, who earned silver in 2019.

SJCS celebrates your success, Shaun! Your remarkable achievements continue to inspire and make the Judenite community proud. Congratulations once again on this outstanding accomplishment!

"The power to save lives begins with early learning."

At St. Jude Catholic School, we witnessed the incredible importance of integrating First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS) into our educational curriculum, as 1,200 high school students participated in a First Aid and CPR lecture and demonstration by the Philippine Red Cross yesterday. This mass First Aid and CPR session goes beyond just a lesson—it's a life-saving initiative that empowers students to act in times of need.

As we recently celebrated National CPR Day, declared by Presidential Proclamation 511, it is essential to remember that learning these vital skills is crucial, but the willingness to act is what truly saves lives. Our students are now equipped with the knowledge and confidence to respond effectively in emergencies, making them invaluable members of their communities.

In her message, Dr. Pang emphasized the students' role, stating, "Embrace this mindset of readiness, responsibility, and care for others. Together, we can make a lasting impact and save lives."

School officials, including Mr. Charles Kohchet-Chua, SJCSAA President; Mr. Jardine Bautista, SJCSAA Board of Trustee; Fr. Cris Cordero; and Dr. Ellen Tan-Cu, School Physician, were also present to show their support for this event.

Take the first step in becoming a lifesaver. Contact the Philippine Red Cross Safety Services today to learn more about First Aid and CPR training. Hong Kong is one of the target destinations for our students for their college or tertiary education. The city's proximity to the Philippines, the culture on par with the Fil-Chi community, and the prestigious universities offering world-class curricula and programs.

Last August 14, 2024, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) visited Saint Jude Catholic School to give a glimpse at how the university provides quality and distinct features in the fields of liberal arts, business, and sciences. Sam Wong, the admissions manager at HKBU, encourages our parents to always be open to the possibility that their children will study abroad, especially as the demand for a career in this era is quite high. Scholarships and grants were also presented during the information session to inspire student applicants to consider studying at the university.

HKBU is a public research university funded by the HK government, which assures every student that they will receive the best and high-quality type of education. Like how they address it, HKBU has remained committed to the pursuit of excellence in education, research, and service to the community. As one of Asia’s finest institutions of higher learning, HKBU is dedicated to nurturing future generations of civically engaged community members, and it provides them with a broad-based, transdisciplinary, and creative education.

Once again, thank you, HKBU, for visiting SJCS and our attendees.

Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

This feast has been celebrated in the East since the sixth century. It was introduced in Rome in the seventh century. On Nov. 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the Dogma of the Assumption. He solemnly proclaimed that the Blessed Virgin Mary was taken up body and should into the glory of heaven at the end of her life. This feast confirms us in the virtue of hope, whereby we seek holiness of life in the midst of our ordinary duties. At the same time, it exhorts us to see heaven as our final home.

Relief Efforts for TY Carina Victims
03 August 2024

The Saint Jude Catholic School community has demonstrated once again the missionary essence of its motto, "Witnessing to the Word in the world," by coming together to support those affected by the combined impact of the southwest monsoon and tropical cyclone Carina. Through our donation and relief efforts called "Lingap Judenite sa Gitna ng Unos," SJCS community members responded in various ways. Some contributed cash and in-kind donations, while others volunteered to assist with sorting, packaging, and distributing relief supplies.

Saint Jude Catholic School extends its deepest gratitude to the esteemed alumni of Batch 79 and Mr. Victor Cua and family for their generous contribution to our community. Their thoughtful gift of the SJCS 60th anniversary commemorative Valentino watches to our dedicated faculty and staff is a testament to their enduring support and commitment to the values and mission of our school.

As we enter the new school year, the Guidance Center continues to provide services and activities that will help the students to foster a holistically well-developed individual ready for the future. Providing and preparing them not only for today with lessons in the classroom, but for their careers as future professionals.

Information sessions are one of the most effective activities for assisting students in navigating their plans for college preparation and even career life itself.

Last July 30, 2024, visitors from the University of Sheffield and Royal Holloway University of London visited Saint Jude Catholic School to provide and share information about their institution. The information session was attended by IBDP students and parents. Dr. Ali Behjou, a Life Sciences Tutor from RHUL gave a talk on the programs they offer, especially in the medical and health allied fields. While Mr. Fareg Aldbrez, a Senior Academic Tutor under the Science & Engineering department of University of Sheffield, showcased the university's scholarships and possible careers that students can pursue once they have finished studying at the institution. This event is in coordination with AUG, our dear partner in the career pathway for students.

Rest assured dear parents that future information sessions like this will continue to help our dear Judenites to prepare for their respective careers and professions in the near future.

Thank you!
