The National Commission for Culture and the Arts announces to the nation the passing of Manlilikha ng Bayan Federico Caballero, recipient of 2000 Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (National Living Treasures Award) for Panay Bukidnon Epic Chanting, at the age of 88.

Federico Caballero was a distinguished Panay-Bukidnon epic chanter from Garangan, Calinog, Iloilo. Affectionately known as Nong Pedring, he was honored with the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan in 2000. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to the practice, transmission and documentation of the oral literature of his community, particularly the Sugidanon, which comprises ten epics.

These ten epics, which are presented in ligbok, a poetic language intricately linked to Kiniray-a, yet no longer spoken, represent an expansive folklore that demands unwavering commitment and exceptional talent to master. Alongside scholars, artists, and cultural advocates, he meticulously reconstructed the nearly lost elements of this oral heritage.

For numerous decades, Nong Pedring consistently traveled from his residence in the mountainous region of Calinog to the area of Iloilo City, diligently contributing to the efforts of promoting the Sugidanon tradition that extended over many years.

His remains will lie in state in Purok 2, Barangay Garangan, Calinog, Iloilo. The arrangements for his wake and state funeral will be announced in due course, in consultation with his family.

The communal celebration of Manlilikha ng Bayan Magdalena Gamayo's Birth Centennial was a convergence of cultural performances and dedications, honoring her life and her invaluable contributions to the art of weaving, a cornerstone of our national heritage. The Plaza del Norte Convention Center transformed into a space of festivity and reverence, filled with close friends, relatives, fellow weavers, students, and officials, all gathered to pay tribute to Nana Dalen.

The evening commenced with the harmonious rhythms of Ilocano oral tradition, highlighted by MB Adelita Bagcal's dallot—a ceremonial prayer typically performed at significant gatherings.

The celebration featured a rich display of artistic forms from several Manlilikha ng Bayan across the Philippines. The Kalinga Budong Dance Troupe, founded by MB Alonzo Saclag, presented the traditional Tachok and Challichog dances of Kalinga. MB Adelita Bagcal led the Ilocano oral ritual Padapadakam, where officials and esteemed guests offered gifts to Nana Dalen in a gesture of respect and honor. The evening also showcased Linggisan, Langka Budjang, Langka Igal Ma Jata Kibut, and Tradisyunal na Igal, traditional dances of the Sama people performed by MB Hadja Sakinur-ain Delasas.

Distinguished officials, including Hon. Victorino Mapa Manalo, Chair of the NCCA; Hon. Jeremy Barnes, Director General of the National Museum; Hon. Matthew Marcos Manotoc, Governor of Ilocos Norte; and Hon. Rommel T. Labasan, Mayor of Pinili also joined the celebration. Senator Loren Legarda also conveyed her greetings. NCCA commissioners Reden S. Ulo and Arvin Villalon were in attendance, as was NCCA Arts Ambassador and Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray.

Resident weavers from the GAMABA Cultural Center, students of the Inabel Weaving Training Program, the Pinili Dance Troupe, Nasudi Chorale, and Saguday Chorale delivered a series of performances, each serving as a tribute to the legacy of Nana Dalen.

In a poignant moment to immortalize her legacy, a birth centennial seal was launched and signed by Nana Dalen herself.

Today is the 96th birth anniversary of National Artist Leandro V. Locsin

Leandro V. Locsin reshaped the urban landscape with a distinctive architecture reflective of Philippine Art and Culture. He believes that the true Philippine Architecture is “the product of two great streams of culture, the oriental and the occidental… to produce a new object of profound harmony.” It is this synthesis that underlies all his works, with his achievements in concrete reflecting his mastery of space and scale.
Every Locsin Building is an original, and identifiable as a Locsin with themes of floating volume, the duality of light and heavy, buoyant and massive running in his major works. From 1955 to 1994, Locsin has produced 75 residences and 88 buildings, including 11 churches and chapels, 23 public buildings, 48 commercial buildings, six major hotels, and an airport terminal building.

Pagbati sa ika-82 na kaarawan ni Manlilikha ng Bayan Alonzo Saclag

Alonzo Saclag
Kalinga
2000 Manlilikha ng Bayan for Traditional Performing Arts

Alonzo Saclag is a Kalinga master of dance and the performing arts, he has made it his mission to create and nurture a greater consciousness and appreciation of Kalinga culture, among the Kalinga themselves and beyond their borders. As a young boy in Lubugan, Alonzo Saclag found endless fascination in the sights and sounds of day-to-day village life and ritual. According to his son, he received no instructions, formal or otherwise, in the performing arts. Yet he mastered not only the Kalinga musical instruments but also the dance patterns and movements associated with his people’s rituals.

To guarantee that his knowledge in the performing arts is passed on to others, he formed the Kalinga Budong Dance Troupe. He takes the young men and women who come to him under his charge and they learn about the music and dance of their ancestors. While many expressed genuine desire to represent and promote Kalinga performing arts, he admits that a handful have other, more personal motives. Because the troupe occasionally goes on tour, joining it is perceived by some as a chance to see places other than the mountains they call home.
