The Faculty of Pharmacy's (FOP) four outstanding departments have shone a bright light ahead of the Academic Year 2024-2025, as the respective chairs of each program showcased the achievements and plans last August 9 in ILLUMINARE 2024.
With the theme, "Innovating the Faculty of Pharmacy: Reflecting on Achievements and Shaping the Future," Pharmacy Dean Prof. Aleth Therese L. Dacanay spearheaded the event in front of student leaders and faculty members in the Thomas Aquinas Research Center Auditorium, which was the first Illuminare to be held physically after its 5th year.
"In this event, we celebrate the hard work, commitment, and dedication of those who have illuminated our past, the previous year, that have driven our college to constantly move forward in new and exciting directions, and they bring us to achieve remarkable success," Dean Dacanay said, referring to the five years of highlighting the faculty's achievements.
All four departments revealed that they aim to maintain the past achievements each garnered in the past, with significant plans to achieve as the Academic Year commences.
With tremendous efforts to refurbish the Department of Pharmacy's laboratories last academic year, Pharmacy Chair Prof. Franelyne P. Casuga noted that the faculty hopes to achieve a safer laboratory experience for the students, professors, and laboratory assistants.
Prof. Casuga added that the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Simbahayan has collaborated with their department to "prepare sulfur ointment that will be distributed to partner communities."
Meanwhile, Department of Medical Technology Chair Prof. Maria Ruth Pineda-Cortel celebrated the triumphs of their students and professors, saying, "The department is already in a very good spot in the Philippines in terms of Medical Technology education." However, she called for suggestions as she believes that the department "can do better."
Plans she shared for the department's growth include a curriculum review and an immersion program for the faculty members.
The department chair also revealed that the entire FOP is preparing for the 3rd International Congress on Collaborative Education and Research in Health Care, which will be held in November 2024.
"We are leading the health allied profession in terms of providing collaboration with each other," Prof. Pineda-Cortel added.
Major improvements in the Biochemistry Department were given by Chair Assoc. Prof. Minerva L. Daya, including an ASEAN University Network - Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) recertification and the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) Level IV accreditation for the BS Biochemistry program.
Prof. Daya also hopes for the Biochemistry program to become "nationally recognized," adding that the recent benchmarking of the department with the Philippine National Police Forensic Science Program is a good start for its nationalization goals.
The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program also gave their plans, as their Program Coordinator Mr. Marlon C. Mallillin talked in the event.
Mr. Mallillin hopes to add more clinics in the Kalinga Lorenzo Center, the development project of FOP, focusing on clinics not limited to men, women, skin, communicable and non-communicable diseases.
He also hopes that the capstone projects of the PharmD students will now be published.
The event can be rewatched on the UST Faculty of Pharmacy page.
