In a historic move that resonates deeply with the faithful and heritage enthusiasts alike, the Archdiocesan Shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Consolación y Correa–San Agustin Church proudly announces a significant milestone. In its 149th Regular Session on August 1, 2024, the 12th City Council of Manila passed Resolution No. 496 (Series of 2024), officially declaring Nuestra Señora de la Consolación y Correa as the "Patroness of Intramuros." Moreover, she has been honored with the esteemed title of "Queen and Protectress of the Distinguished and Ever Loyal City."
In light of this momentous recognition, the upcoming Patronal feast of Nuestra Señora de la Consolación y Correa, scheduled for September 8, 2024, will mark not only her annual celebration but also the inaugural Fiesta de Intramuros. This historic event, set for the second Sunday of September, will bring together the community in a grand celebration of faith, heritage, and the enduring spirit of the Walled City under the patronage of its newly proclaimed Queen and Protectress.

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
On November 1, 1950, Venerable Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of bishops, theologians and laity. There were few dissenting voices. What the pope solemnly declared was already a common belief in the Catholic Church.
We find homilies on the Assumption going back to the sixth century. In following centuries the Eastern Churches held steadily to the doctrine, but some authors in the West were hesitant. However, by the thirteenth century there was universal agreement. The feast was celebrated under various names (Commemoration, Dormition, Passing, Assumption) from at least the fifth or sixth century.
Scripture does not give an account of Mary’s Assumption into heaven. Nevertheless, Revelation 12 speaks of a woman who is caught up in the battle between good and evil. Many see this woman as God’s people. Since Mary best embodies the people of both Old and New Testament, her Assumption can be seen as an exemplification of the woman’s victory.

August: A Special Time for the Augustinian Family
The month of August is a special time for Augustinians and for the people we serve.
The Augustinians have been following in the footsteps of Augustine since the fourth century.
On the 27th of August, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine. And on the 28th, the Augustinian family, in unity with the whole Church, celebrates the solemnity of our holy father Saint Augustine.
Augustine is for us a source of great wisdom and inspiration, as his life and his many writings give us greater understanding into the mystery of God’s love, as well as a very human insight into the many ways in which our human relationships (family and friends) can indeed be the lived experience of God’s love in our own lives. Augustine shows us in very concrete ways how we can lead lives that will lead us toward the Kingdom of God.
Through his mother’s love, prayer and example, and after much searching, St. Augustine converted to the Catholic Church and became one of the great Doctors of the Church. Augustine’s human struggles, even after so many centuries, are still very relevant to the kinds of conflicts and problems that young people encounter today. His desire to grow in faith and his open sharing of how he was always looking for God, especially as we find in the Confessions, give us some very down-to-earth ideas of what it means to be disciples of Jesus who are always looking for the Kingdom of God.
From an Augustinian perspective...
Every parish activity, from prayer to adult or youth education; from the celebration of the sacraments to fund-raising activities to help feed the poor; all that we are doing when we are united as a Christian community is an expression of the one Body of Christ (St. Augustine often referred to the “Christus Totuus”, the Whole Christ), who is present in our world in and through the Church.
So we celebrate this month of August, and we continue to grow in our faith and in our willingness to serve others, as we too long for the coming of God’s Kingdom. With Saint Augustine we pray:
“You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in You.”
Let us continue pray for the increase of Priestly, Active and Contemplative Augustinian Vocations!

AUGUSTINE AND FRIENDSHIP
When he himself was a student, Augustine wanted to give everyone that he was a man of the world. The young man not only desired but in fact did cut a fine figure. Yet there is another side of him that must be emphasized: his cult of friendship. He experienced friendship in all its forms: the unfriendly friendship that leads to evildoing; the purely human friendship that despairs when faced with the scandal of death; and the Christian friendship that is deeper and more serene and lasts in hope, until eternity.
At every moment he felt within himself the truth of the words he wrote one day to a devout Roman matron: “Nothing human is unattractive to the person who has no friend.”
He experienced unfriendly human friendship at the age of sixteen when he found himself among companions who were ashamed of not being shameless. It was this friendship that persuaded him to commit the theft of the pears, for on his own he would never have done it.
He experienced purely human friendship when he was twenty-one and living at Tagaste during his first stint as a teacher. There he found a contemporary who had been his schoolmate and playmate, and he bound himself to this man with tender affection. Suddenly, however, the friend died, and his death caused Augustine to despair: “Great was the grief which my heart was darkened, and whatever I looked upon was death to me. My own country became a torture to me, and my father’s house a strange unhappiness, and whatever I had shared with him was turned into a frightful torment to me, now that I was without him.”
Christian friendship renders perfect the other human friendship, according to Augustine. When Augustine had been converted he experienced thee attraction, saw the ideal, and interpreted thee requirements of this higher friendship. He saw it as characterized by a love unto tenderness, a trust that is not disturbed by the friend’s possible infidelity, a communion marked by generous giving and joyous receiving, and a disinterestedness that requires of the friend only that he or she advance in wisdom, union with God, and love of Christ.
