No Passport Needed
Read Ephesians 1:1 through 3:21

Traveling abroad poses challenges. In addition to obtaining a passport, it would help if you learned the language of the people. Failure to possess a thorough understanding of the culture and customs of a country may hinder effective communication. One word or a mispronounced syllable could transform an intended meaning into something entirely different.

Prior to the coming of Christ, the Gentiles were “foreigners to the covenants of the promise” (Ephesians 2:12). As a rule, they did not enjoy the benefits of knowing God, the benefits available to faithful Jews. However, the death and resurrection of Jesus accomplished two glorious feats: It destroyed the barrier between Jews and Gentiles, and opened the way for both to know God in a greater way than was possible under the old covenant (verses 14–18).

The God of the universe invites you to approach Him with freedom and confidence (Ephesians 3:12). He has already processed your passport to his throne through the atoning blood of his son, Jesus. There is no need to go through customs. In fact, leave your baggage at the door. Just get on board!

PRAYER SUGGESTION: God, thank you for allowing me to approach you with freedom and confidence!

Healthy Living
Read Proverbs 3:1 through 4:27; 1 Corinthians 5:1–13 27

Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones (Proverbs 3:7–8).

To achieve good health, it may seem wise to follow the advice of “experts.” But most experts overlook the biggest problem—a lack of relationship with God. The apostle, Paul put it this way, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:8).

Without continual guidance from the Creator, how can people know what is healthy, wise, and true? Certainly, those who “fear the Lord and shun evil” have a deeper understanding than those who rely on human wisdom. And, while Christians still face health problems, the Lord strengthens all believers through the things they suffer. Their resulting spiritual health exceeds anything worldly people can experience, since those who seek God gain eternal vitality.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Godliness brings health to the human body and spirit.

All for Jesus
Read Romans 13:1 through 16:27

For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die; we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord (Romans 14:7-8).

Throughout church history, whenever people gathered together to worship God, invariably disagreements arose. And so it was in Rome. Political differences, dietary preferences, and other conflicting convictions gave rise to heated debate and angry actions. Paul reasoned with his hearers, urging them to submit themselves to the ruling authorities and to get along with each other. In this unifying passage, he reminded believers that they did not live to please themselves.

Today, when conflicts arise in the local church, pastors often refer back to the letters of Paul to address those ensnared by contentious attitudes. Because each individual believer is a part of the greater whole of which Christ Jesus is the head, all believers are to live together with a heart to help each other and to please the Lord.

Thought for Today: Your purpose is not to win others over to your point of view, but to point others to Jesus.

God’s Life-Giving Word
Read Psalms 106:1 through 109:31

Ryan slipped downstairs at midnight, trying not to awaken his wife or their three children. The weary young father needed a little time with Jesus. Overwhelmed by life, he felt like an all-around failure.

Ryan prayed, but, when he sensed no immediate reply, he muttered, “I must be failing You too.”

Desperate for an escape to a simpler time in his life, Ryan played an old music CD. It began with the sweet voice of a child reciting:

My heart, O God, is steadfast; I will sing and make music . . . I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples (Psalm 108:1,3).

Tears rolled down Ryan’s cheeks as the words penetrated his heart. Dropping to his knees, he begged, “Forgive me, Jesus, for feeling like a failure when You’ve given me victory! I will praise You.”

The Scriptures are life to a believer. God’s words will strengthen the heart and inspire praise.

CHALLENGE FOR TODAY: Seek help for your problems by reading the Bible and trusting God to give profound insights.

Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Unite My Heart
Read Psalms 79:1 through 86:17

Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name (Psalm 86:11).

In this climax to his prayer for guidance, David turns to the inward person, where the motivations for his actions originate. His desire to form right habits is clear: David wants to learn God’s ways so he can know God’s faithfulness, follow God’s ways faithfully, and ultimately to reverence God’s name in word, thought, and deed.

A key phrase in the verse is “an undivided heart.” Other Bible versions translate it: “unite my heart.” And the reason is clear. Humans are often divided in loyalty, being pulled in many directions.

Both the apostle Paul and James, the brother of the Lord, expressed similar ideas. Paul said that he was at odds with his flesh (Romans 7:14–20), and James wrote that our doubts are evidence of being double-minded (James 1:5–8).

The Psalmist gave such a simple remedy: “Teach me your way, Lord, . . . give me an undivided heart.” And when we listen and learn, we will find the grace to rely on God’s faithfulness and reverence His name!

PRAYER SUGGESTION: “Unite my heart to fear Your name.”

Conditioned to Fear
Read Psalms 45:1 through 47:9

Tillie, a little brown-and-white dog is terrified of thunder. A series of storms rattled the windowpanes. Sunday through Saturday, it was the same every day. After a week of this, Tillie expected thunder every time it rained.

The following Monday a light shower pattered gently against the windowpanes. Trembling, Tillie huddled close to her master, certain the thunder would follow. She leaned against his leg or lay at his feet. Her master was her refuge.

Most humans have been conditioned to fear something, as well. Childhood experiences have burned deep scars into many hearts. They may be burned so deeply no one remembers how or when the fears first started.

Once in a while, everyone needs someone strong to protect him or her from the storms of life—someone mightier than another human being. They need to lean on the Heavenly Master.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).

CHALLENGE FOR TODAY: Memorize this verse. Lean on God’s truth during your thunderstorms.
