September 1898 was when the first public schools were established in the Philippines and 1953 was when the former President Elpidio Quirino declared the second week of September and the following years as the “Education Week.” Wherein vital information about the objectives, work, and accomplishments of the public and private schools may be disseminated among the people.

And so in the spirit of Education Week, did you know that a school year in the Philippines may not exceed 220 school days? It’s true! It is amended by the Republic Act 7797 and this includes the class days which can be suspended due to natural or man-made calamities or disasters.

People managers don’t usually get the credit they deserve for the company’s success. They are generally overlooked and are sometimes considered irrelevant. But as the world continues its inevitable change and companies and organizations adapt to these changes, the importance of Human Resource is magnified.

But really. What is people management? At its core, people management is all about truly caring and paying attention to the needs of their employees. The level of people management skills an organization has can determine the success of a company since bad people management can decrease productivity and lower the overall morale of their employees. While good people management can increase productivity and engage employees.

So JPMAPers and fellow HRDs, let’s start this month with a pat on our shoulders and continuing our job as the bridge between the company and its employees.

Recruiters and recruiting teams can benefit greatly from social media screening to confirm a candidate's application. It gives them a sense of who they are as a person before they ever have to meet them. It can also assist businesses in invalidating an application and making a great employee that fits nicely with the corporate culture.

However, recruiters must be mindful of the possible risks of doing so. The sole basis for hiring should not be based on social networking. The risks of doing so include bias and diverting attention away from a candidate's primary strengths.
