Our Story
The Master of Arts in Fine Arts and Design (MAFAD) at the School of Fine Arts and Design (SFAD) is a two-year program envisioned for art and design graduates and academic professionals in allied fields. The degree provides advanced contemporary studio practice in non-specific media, as well as opportunities to develop a strong background in history, theory, methodology, criticism, and research in preparation for professional art and design careers and higher education teaching.
The MAFAD curriculum is a critical crossroad of various disciplines, including but not limited to art education, art history, design, fine arts, and heritage and museum studies. A dedicated faculty of professional artists, designers, and scholars trained locally and internationally are committed to academic and artistic excellence. In addition, there are opportunities to meet and interact with visiting artists and art historians, critics, patrons, and gallery and museum professionals throughout the academic year. The MAFAD’s student-centered pedagogy takes the form of a graduate course, seminar, workshop, self-directed studio, and/or directed individual study designed to encourage traditional and innovative learning, meaningful dialogues, and sustained collaboration with the arts community, local organizations, and museums. Throughout the program, graduate students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in utilizing a particular media appropriate to advanced studio art and design practice, knowledge of the issues of the ever-changing landscape of art, design, and education, competence in understanding terms and concepts relevant to contemporary art discourse, and ability to analyze and articulate ideas with greater clarity, coherence, and persuasion. The successful oral defense of a written thesis and the installation of an exhibition with an Artist Talk are the final degree requirements for graduation.
A challenging M.A. program, we are seeking qualified candidates with strong portfolios who hold accredited B.A. degrees in Fine Arts or related disciplines to apply for the MAFAD Program at the PWU’s SFAD.
