PULWAT UPDATE I PULWAT JOINS FORCES FOR COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP DRIVE
To promote environmental responsibility, PULWAT partnered with the local government unit (LGU) of Maramag with various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community volunteers for a large-scale clean-up drive—the initiative aimed to enhance the town's environmental health and promote community spirit.
Volunteers, equipped with gloves and trash bags fanned out across key areas of the town, including parks, public spaces, and creeks. Residents also of all ages participated, with local private organizations encouraging them to join as part of their community service projects.
By late morning, participants had collected several wastes, ranging from plastics to discarded appliances, highlighting the urgent need for continued efforts in waste management. The collected materials were sorted for recycling, underscoring the drive's educational component.
As event draws close, PULWAT hopes this initiative will spark ongoing community engagement and collaboration towards a cleaner, greener future. With the success of the clean-up drive, PULWAT demonstrates that collective action can significantly impact environmental conservation, inspiring other towns in Bukidnon to follow suit.

PULWAT UPDATE I Plan 11 Farmers Empowered Through Development of Organic Concoctions & Extracts Training
In a stride towards sustainable agriculture, local farmers were gathered this week for a specialized training program focused on organic farming techniques. This initiative, part of a broader climate-smart agriculture strategy, aimed to equip farmer-beneficiaries with essential skills in developing organic concoctions and extracts to enhance their farming practices.
The training, organized by the PULWAT in collaboration with the Provincial Agriculture Office of Bukidnon led hands-on workshops demonstrating how to create natural fertilizers and pest repellents using locally sourced materials.
Participants learned to make a variety of organic concoctions, including fermented plant juices and compost teas, which are not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective alternatives to chemical fertilizers.
“Gusto namon nga masiguro nga ang among pagpanguma malungtaron ug nga kami makapahiangay sa mga hagit sa klima ug kini nga pagbansay makatabang kaayo (We want to ensure our farming is sustainable and that we can adapt to climate challenges and this training is very helpful),” Bae Elenita Dajang shared.
The initiative also emphasized the importance of soil health and biodiversity. Experts - Nimfa V. Carpina, Adlrin Ompad, Neil I. Echin, and Socorro Douglas T. Catubo, highlighted how organic farming practices can help mitigate the impacts of climate change, improve crop resilience, and increase farmers’ incomes. “By using organic methods, farmers can reduce their reliance on synthetic chemicals, improve their yields, and contribute to a healthier ecosystem,” said Nimfa V. Carpina, Focal Person-Organic Agriculture at PAgrO.
Participants were keen about the practical applications of what they learned. Many expressed their intention to implement these organic practices in their fields immediately.
"Nalipay ako nga sulayan kini nga mga pamaagi sa balay (I’m excited to try these methods at home),” said Carmelita dela Cruz, one of the farmer-beneficiaries.
The training also raised a sense of community among the farmers, allowing them to share experiences and challenges related to their agricultural practices. PULWAT hopes that this camaraderie will lead to ongoing support and collaboration among farmers.
As climate change continues to pose challenges for farmers worldwide, initiatives like this training are vital for building resilience and promoting sustainable agriculture.
PULWAT UPDATE I Farmers equipped with Reforestation and Climate-Resilient Farming Practices
To help restore the watershed and equip farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge to combat climate change, a capability-building training on Reforestation and Climate Resilient Farming Practices was recently conducted for the UC-EC Plan 11 farmer-beneficiaries.
The training, organized by the PULWAT in collaboration with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office of Bukidnon, aimed to empower farmers with the tools and techniques needed to sustainably manage their land and mitigate the effects of climate change. Participants were taught about the importance of reforestation in restoring the watershed, as well as various farming practices that are resilient to the impacts of climate change by resource speaker Benedicto B. Golosino.
"Akong nakat-unan ang kahinungdanon sa pagtanom og native nga mga kahoy sa atong watershed aron mapalambo ang kalidad sa tubig ug malikayan ang erosion. Nakakat-on usab ako mahitungod sa malungtarong mga pamaagi sa pagpanguma nga makatabang kanato sa pagpahiangay sa pagbag-o sa mga pattern sa panahon ug pagsiguro nga ang atong mga tanum molambo bisan pa sa mga hagit sa pagbag-o sa klima, (I learned about the importance of planting native trees in our watershed to improve water quality and prevent erosion. I also learned about sustainable farming practices that can help us adapt to changing weather patterns and ensure our crops thrive despite the challenges of climate change)," Bobby S. Pina, a farmer-beneficiary shared.
Overall, the training was a success, with participants expressing their gratitude for the opportunity to learn and improve their practices. With the skills and knowledge gained from the training, farmer-beneficiaries are now better equipped to contribute to the restoration of the watershed and adapt to the challenges of climate change. To strengthen environmental consciousness and promote sustainable practices, an important seminar titled "Championing Sustainable Watersheds: The Whys and Hows" was recently held for farmer-beneficiaries of the Plan 11 watershed rehabilitation project. The event, which took place at Barangay La Roxas, Maramag, Bukidnon, drew participants to learn more about the integral role of sustainable watershed management in ensuring the health of their agricultural landscapes.
The seminar aimed to bridge knowledge gaps and empower local farmers with practical tools and strategies for effective watershed management. Organized by PULWAT, the event featured informative sessions led by an expert in environmental science, Dr. Angela Grace Toledo-Bruno from Central Mindanao University.
Dr. Bruno delivered a compelling keynote message on the importance of watershed health. "Watersheds are the lifeblood of our agriculture. Healthy watersheds support productive farming, enhance biodiversity, and contribute to overall ecosystem resilience," she emphasized.

One of the anticipated seminars on Land-Based and Water-Based Pollution Prevention and Mitigation successfully concluded leaving attendees inspired and equipped with new knowledge to tackle pressing environmental issues. Held at Barangay La Roxas, this seminar brought together farmer-beneficiaries involved in the watershed rehabilitation project of PULWAT. The event featured expert-led sessions aimed at addressing the dual challenges of land-based and water-based pollution.
The seminar began with a keynote address from For. Danilo Tabamo, a PULWAT SWMS who highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive pollution control strategies. Afterwards, the discussion was then led by Dr. Jose Hermis Patricio of Central Mindanao University, who emphasized the interconnectedness of land and water ecosystems and the critical role that each community plays in maintaining environmental health.
Dr. Patricio emphasized that the health of our watersheds is directly tied to the actions we take on land. By understanding and implementing effective pollution prevention and mitigation techniques, we will be able to safeguard our water resources. After the discussion, participants underwent a workshop focusing on practical strategies for reducing pollution. Topics included best practices for waste management, the impact of agricultural runoff on waterways, and innovative methods for reducing waste. The workshop was designed to provide actionable insights and foster hands-on learning.
The event concluded with a networking session, allowing attendees to connect with fellow community members. Many participants expressed their enthusiasm about the knowledge gained and their commitment to applying these new practices in their own communities.

A seminar on Philippine Environmental Law has concluded for farmer-beneficiaries of the watershed rehabilitation project aimed to equip participants with crucial knowledge about environmental regulations and their roles in safeguarding local ecosystems.
The seminar, organized by the PULWAT in collaboration with the Bukidnon Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), brought together UC-EC Plan 11 farmer-beneficiaries directly involved in the watershed rehabilitation project. The sessions covered key aspects of Philippine environmental laws, including the PD 705, the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) Act, and regulations related to forest conservation and land use.
Participants engaged in a series of interactive discussions led by experts, Mr. Benedicto Golosino and Mr. Jessie Bucar of PENRO. Topics included the legal framework for environmental protection, the responsibilities of stakeholders in conservation projects, and practical steps for compliance with environmental regulations. PULWAT UPDATE I Capacity Building Training on Beads and Handicrafts Concludes, Empowering Indigenous Women and Youth
In a significant move towards sustainable economic empowerment, a comprehensive capability-building training on beads and handicrafts making, conducted in partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), has concluded successfully. The training program, tailored specifically for Indigenous women and youth, took place at the local IP center of Barangay La Roxas, Maramag, Bukidnon.
This initiative aimed to equip participants with essential skills in crafting and managing beads and handicrafts, blending traditional artistry with modern techniques. This effort is part of a broader strategy of PULWAT to support indigenous communities in preserving their cultural heritage while creating economic opportunities.
The training covered a wide range of topics including beadwork, weaving, and traditional handicraft techniques. Expert trainer, Bae Rizza Pandian of TESDA provided hands-on instruction, focusing on both skill acquisition and business acumen. Day 2 : Practical exercise on establishing Continuous Contour Trench (CCT) that will help in conserving soil moisture by reducing runoff and enhancing infiltration. These CCTs capture and store rainwater, allowing it to percolate into the soil instead of washing away topsoil and nutrients. Likewise, by slowing down the flow of water across slopes, these CCTs prevent soil erosion as they act as barriers, reducing the velocity of water runoff and trapping sediment, thus protecting fertile topsoil.

On the second day, a practical training exercise, focusing on Continuous Contour Trench (CCT) techniques was executed. On the first day, the training included practical sessions on creating homemade food supplements tailored to enhance the nutritional intake of goats. This hands-on approach allowed farmers to engage directly with the material, ensuring they could apply their newfound knowledge on their farms.
The second training day focused on practical veterinary skills, where participants received hands-on experience in administering vitamins and medicines to goats. Under the supervision of Central Mindanao University-Department of Animal Science experts, farmers practiced proper injection techniques, ensuring they would be equipped to care for their animals effectively.
"The goal is to empower our farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to optimize their livestock management. Understanding how to provide proper nutrition is crucial for the success of NPC-PULWAT’s goat dispersal project," said Ana Celina T. Soriano, resource speaker and chairperson of the Department of Animal Science.
The training program is part of PULWAT's broader initiative to support local farmers and enhance their agricultural practices. With the impending goat dispersal project, participants are now better prepared to manage their livestock, which will contribute significantly to the community's economic growth.

The training aimed to educate participants on the specifics of their contracts and the essential maintenance activities required before billing recommendations and payments can be processed.
The training, organized by PULWAT, was attended by farmer-beneficiaries of the UC-EC Plan 11 project, held at Sitio Catal, Barangay La Roxas, Maramag, Bukidnon covering crucial aspects of watershed management and contractual obligations.
Key topics included a comprehensive overview of each farmer's contractual responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling plantation maintenance activities as stipulated in the contract. These activities are critical for the sustainability of watershed rehabilitation efforts and the timely processing of financial disbursements.
During the training, participants were briefed on the significance of adhering to specified maintenance protocols such as regular watering, pruning, pest control, and monitoring of plant health. Emphasis was placed on these activities' role in maintaining the watershed's ecological balance, preventing soil erosion, and promoting biodiversity.
Furthermore, the training facilitated interactive discussions and practical demonstrations, enabling farmers to clarify doubts and gain hands-on experience in implementing best practices for plantation upkeep. In celebration of the Philippine Environment Month and in conjunction with the Philippines' 126th Independence Day, the NPC WMD-Pulangi Watershed Area Team teamed up with the BLGU of Panalsalan for an inspiring tree planting activity at a tribal school in Sitio Kasagayan.
With shovels breaking ground and hands tenderly cradling seedlings, participants ranging from young ones and professionals embarked on their tree planting legacy, each seedling symbolizing hope for a greener, more sustainable future.
PULWAT Acting-Section Chief Jose Allan B. Nallano emphasized the importance of community-driven initiatives in combating climate change and fostering sustainable development.
Likewise, the activity served as a reminder of the interconnectedness between environmental conservation and national identity. Just as our forefathers fought bravely for our independence, so too must we honor their legacy by safeguarding the natural treasures that define our homeland.
"Today, as we celebrate our environment month and independence, let us also reaffirm our commitment to protecting the environment," Mr. Nallano added.
