The Feast of the Holy Family
The Feast of the Holy Family is a Roman Catholic religious festival held on the first Sunday after Christmas. Although there are major feast days dedicated to each member of the Holy FamilyโJesus, Mary, and Josephโthe Feast of the Holy Family commemorates their life together and focuses on religious family life. Because of the Holy Family's flight into Egypt, Copts have observed a feast for the Holy Family since ancient times.

Also known as โmisa de galloโ or โmass of the roosterโ, which gained its name from the early rising birds. It is a tradition with 9 consecutive masses from December 16 to Christmas eve which anticipates the nativity. Simbang Gabi began during the early days of Spanish rule in the Philippines as a practical compromise for farmers who began work before sunrise to avoid the noonday heat in the fields. priests started to celebrate Mass in the early mornings for the Farmers. This beloved Christmas tradition has developed into a distinctive aspect of Philippine culture.

//GAUDETE SUNDAY - 3rd Sunday of Advent//
[Sem. Cayetano Manuel Letada]
[Sem. Joshua Sanguenza]
-WHAT IS GAUDETE SUNDAY?-
The Advent season shifts its focus on Gaudete Sunday. The focus of the first two weeks of Advent can be summarized as "The Lord is Coming," but beginning with Gaudete Sunday, the focus may be "The Lord is Near." This shift is marked by a bright mood and a strong awareness of Blissful Preparation.
We anticipate both the celebration of Christ's birth and His second coming at the end of time during the Advent season. We spend four weeks in penitential reflection preparing our hearts for Christmas. But Gaudete Sunday, which falls in the middle of the season, calls us to rejoice in hope!
Gaudete Sunday is a joyous celebration. Even though it occurs within the traditionally penitential season of Advent, Gaudete Sunday acts as a mid-point reprieve from the somber rituals to celebrate the impending birth of Jesus.
-WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM?-
The word โgaudeteโ is derived from the Latin words โgaudium,โ joy, and โgaudeo,โ to rejoice or be glad. Gaudete is taken from the Entrance Antiphon: โRejoice in the Lord always; again, I say, rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is nearโ (paraphrase, Phil 4:4-5).
-WHEN IS GAUDETE SUNDAY?-
Gaudete Sunday is the third Sunday of Advent. The date usually falls between December 11 to 17 each year. Gaudete Sunday this year was on December 11, 2022.

Prayer for the dead
God our Father,
Your power brings us to birth,
Your providence guides our lives,
and by Your command, we return to dust.
Lord, those who die may they live in Your presence,
their lives change but do not end.
I pray in hope for my family,
relatives and friends,
and for all the dead known to You alone.
In company with Christ,
Who died and now lives,
may they rejoice in Your kingdom,
where all our tears are wiped away.
Unite us together again in one family,
to sing Your praise forever and ever.
Amen.
V. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.
V. May they rest in peace.
R. Amen.
V. May their soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
R. Amen.

Devotion to the poor souls in purgatory
The souls of those who passed away in God's kindness are known as the Poor Souls. However, they still have to endure some pain due to the sins they committed during their time on earth. As the name suggests, purgatory is the situation of those who have not yet been absolved of the debt they owe to God for past transgressions. Purgatory is an infallible doctrine of the Catholic Church. Souls in Purgatory are poor because they still suffer and need our help. Those who pass away without having committed a mortal sin but who nonetheless owe a temporal penalty for prior transgressions "are cleaned after death in purgatorial or cleansing punishments."
Mortal sins owe an eternal debt of punishment and deny the sinner of sanctifying grace and the right to heaven The debt of eternal punishment is forgiven and sanctifying grace is restored when mortal sins are cleansed in the sacrament of penance. However, in most cases, temporal punishment must be served.
Those who died freed from mortal sins are not truly dead, they are either in heaven or in purgatory that is why we Catholics have a strong devotion to the souls in purgatory because we assume that the souls of our beloved neighbors, relatives, and friends are in purgatory. Once a soul reached the state of purgation there is no other place to go except heaven. The only problem is when, that is why as a part of the church, we, the church militant, must pray for the souls in the state of purgation, to help them be a part of the communion of saints and to be with God in paradise.
As the book of Maccabees said โAnd making a gathering, he [Judas] sent twelve thousand drachms of silver to Jerusalem for sacrifice to be offered for the sins of the dead, thinking well and religiously concerning the resurrection (for if he had not hoped that they that were slain should rise again, it would have seemed superfluous and vain to pray for the dead) and because he considered that they who had fallen asleep with godliness, had great grace laid up for them. It is, therefore, a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.โ โ II Maccabees 12:43-46

Superstition, a belief, a partial belief, or a behavior that has no apparent rational basis. By using the word, one implies that one has superior knowledge or support for one's own scientific, philosophical, or religious beliefs. Being unclear, it is most likely only appropriate for subjective contexts. With this criteria, superstitions can be loosely divided into three categories: personal, cultural, and religious.
These are some examples of superstition in the Philippines:

ใWhy do Catholics celebrate All Souls Day?
โ The Church is made up of both living believers and those who have gone before us. The latter group contains the saints in heaven as well as the faithful souls cleansed in purgatory. On November 1st, we commemorate those who departed to be with God, and on November 2nd, Catholics remember all the faithful departed. This day, also known as All Souls Day, we respect them for their faithfulness in life and pray for them as they are sanctified before joining Heaven.
Rev. 21:26 โ They shall bring into it the glory and honor of the nation. But nothing unclean shall enter it, nor anyone who practices abominations or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lambโs book of lifeโ
ใWhat is an indulgence?
โ "An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints."

ใPenitentail indulgence(ALL SOULS DAY)
โ Visiting a Cemetery: An indulgence, applicable solely to the Souls in Purgatory, is granted to the faithful who visit a cemetery and pray for the deceased, even if just mentally. The indulgence is typically plenary each day from November 1-8; on other days of the year, it is only partial.
โ Visiting a Church on November 2: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who piously visit a church on the day dedicated to the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed [November 2 as well as the Sunday prior or following, and on All Saints' Day]. When visiting the church, one Our Father and the Creed must be performed.
ใIndulgence Requirements: In order to get a plenary indulgence, you must also complete the following three conditions:
โช๏ธ Sacramental Confession,
โช๏ธ Eucharistic communion,
โ Prayer for the Holy Father's purpose while being separated from sin. It would be preferable if the sacramental Confession, especially Holy Communion, and the prayer for the Pope's intentions are performed on the same day as the indulgenced act; however, it is sufficient if these sacred rites and prayers are performed within a few days (about 20) before or after the indulgenced act.
The condition of praying for the intention of the Holy Father is fully satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary. A plenary indulgence can be acquired only once in the course of the day.

COMMEMORATION OF ALL SOULS DAY
(November 2)
Roman Catholics observe All Souls' Day as a day to remember all the faithfully deceased, including baptized Christians who are said to be in purgatory since they passed away with the guilt of smaller sins still lodged in their souls.
It takes place on November 2. The day is set aside for prayer and memory because, according to Roman Catholic belief, the prayers of the faithful on earth will help cleanse these souls and prepare them for the vision of God in heaven. Requiem masses are frequently given, and a lot of people visit and occasionally decorate loved ones' graves.
Since ancient times, specific days have been set aside for praying for specific categories of the deceased. It is thanks to Odilo, the abbot of Cluny, that a day for general intercession was established on November 2 (died 1048).
The day was chosen to follow All Saints' Day and towards the end of the 13th century, it had almost become a global holiday. Next the feast of all church members who are thought to be in heaven, the church on earth turns the following day to remember those souls said to be toiling in purgatory.
Today, praying is a common approach to observe All Souls' Day. The custom of asking parishioners to write the names of their deceased loved ones in an envelope that is practiced by many Catholic churches, and these names are remembered during
all masses and Catholic church services observed during the
month of November.
Cleaning and visiting graves as well as decorating cemeteries
with lit candles are other All Souls Day customs. Some family will
even prepare their loved one's favorite dish and lay it out on their graves.
NOVEMBER 1| SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTS DAY.
What is the Significance of All Saints Day?
โ
On the Solemnity of All Saints, the Church honors Christians who have reached spiritual maturity. It is a day to honor all the saints who have been canonized by the Church. All Saints' Day is a Christian celebration. The Roman Catholic Church observes it on November 1st, while the Eastern Orthodox Church observes it on the first Sunday after Pentecost. In the Orthodox Church, it is known as the Sunday of All Saints, while in the Roman Catholic Church, it is known as the Solemnity of All Saints. All Saints' Day honors all Christian saints. Saints are holy people who are believed to be immensely close to God. Saints, according to Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians, have special powers to help people. People honor the saints by lighting candles and attending church.
History of All Saints Day
โ
While now observed in November, All Saints' Day was originally celebrated on May 13, although the origin cannot be traced with certainty. Pope Boniface IV formally started what would later be known as All Saints Day on May 13 in 609 AD when he dedicated the Pantheon in Rome as a church in honor of the Virgin Mary and all martyrs. The current date of November 1 was established by Pope Gregory III during his reign (731-741 AD) when he dedicated a chapel in Rome's St. Peter's Basilica in honor of all saints. While this celebration was originally limited to Rome, later in 837 Pope Gregory IV ordered the official observance of All Saints Day every November 1 and extended its celebration to the entire Church.
In today's time, it is very common for every Christian household to have a bible. But prior to the invention of the printing press, bibles were only available for priests and wealthy Christians due to limited handwritten copies. That was when monks in the early 3rd century started using prayer beads to keep track of psalms and prayers as a substitute for reading the bible, hence the rosary is also referred to as the poor man's bible.
The rosary we know today is far from what the early Christians prayed. Monks used 150 beads to keep track of the 150 psalms that are said throughout the day. This was later changed to praying pater noster prior to the 13th century giving it the name paster noster beads. During most of the Middle Ages, from the 5th to the 15th century, there was a pious practice of praying pater noster continuously as a form of penance and devotion.
The monks actively participate in praying the 150 psalms of the Old Testament in common. This practice required the monks to have the ability to read and understand the Latin language.
But some of the monks were not able to read and understand Latin, in Ireland, together with the lay people were allowed to substitute the chanting of 150 psalms into 150 Pater Noster.
In the 11th century, the praying of the Hail Mary was also introduced based on the custom of honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary. The name Our Ladyโs Psalter was given. Although not the founder of the Marian psalter, St. Dominic was tasked by the blessed virgin Mary to preach this devotion to her while promising gifts through meditating on its mysteries.
Before St. Dominic, the Marian Psalter was being prayed as a way of honoring Mary, through Saint Dominic, the Marian Psalter took an apostolic and meditative dimension. (level up) To meditate on the mysteries of the Incarnation, Passion, Death, and resurrection of Christ and on the life of the Blessed Mother. The faithful were to meditate on the mysteries while praying the Hail Marys.
