OFFICIAL STATEMENT

22 May 2024 - The Department of Education (DepEd) mourns the passing of a Grade 5 learner in Alfonso, Cavite after an accident inside the school premises on Monday, May 20, 2024.

We extend our sincerest condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the victim. The concerned Schools Division Office has reached out to the family for necessary assistance during this time of grief.

Likewise, we are monitoring the status of the four other classmates involved in the said accident. School officials are already in coordination with the local government unit, for medical assistance and the conduct of psychological first aid to the affected learners.

Meanwhile, DepEd is also working with local authorities for the conduct of a thorough investigation on the incident.

Official Statement on the Brawling Incident after the Football Championship Game during the Palarong Bicol 2024 in BU Oval

May 3, 2024

The DepEd Regional Office V with the Bicol Region Athletics Association, upon receiving the information that a brawling incident had happened in the Bicol University (BU) Oval after the championship games for Football-Secondary Male, has immediately contacted concerned Palaro Officials to ensure that any athlete who might have suffered injuries will be given appropriate medical attention.

We are saddened that this incident has happened despite our repeated calls for professionalism and sportsmanship in any sports event. As the injured athletes are given proper medical attention, an outright investigation is also initiated with the Learner's Rights and Protection Office (LRPO) of the Regional Office. A Psycho-Social First Aid (PFA) for all the involved athletes and sports officials of the concerned delegations shall also be conducted.

We will see to it that this incident is properly handled and acted upon, and ensure that violent actions such as this shall not be repeated in future Palaro events.

We commend the swift response of our partners, the local PNP and the City DRRMO who have helped us establish safety and security measures even before the conduct of the Palaro.
