Oshamie Evangelio Rios, now a licensed teacher, recalled her experience eight years ago as a government intern under the Department of Labor and Employment’s Government Internship Program (GIP).

“Eight years ago as a GIP, I was assigned to different departments in the Municipal Government of Looc. Medyo mahirap knowing na ang mga kasama ko ay mga veterans na kung tawagin samantalang ako – kakapain ko pa lahat. First, tagahatid muna ng mga documents and taga ayos ng mga papers and all. Then habang tumatagal, nakikipag interact na ako sa mga clients. Syempre po with the help of Ma’am Bebot Del Prado, walang work na di mo kakayanin. Lagi rin kasi sinasabi ni Ma’am sa amin noon na ‘di porket pinangat ang ulam niyo, pinangat na habang buhay’. Kaya bago ka matapos sa pagiging GIP, alam mo lahat,” said Ma’am Rios.

She also lightheartedly said that it’s as if DOLE was calling her to be a teacher which helped her to boost her attitude, behavior, and personality. On June 2022 she passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET).

Every job demands you to interact with others, and it can take a lot of self- confidence and trust in yourself. Rona Kay N. Carlos works at Cebu Pacific Air as a Finance Administrator in the Catering and Sales Department of 1Aviation for almost seven years now.

Carlos was a former government intern at the Municipal Government of Looc in 2016 as part of Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) Government Internship Program (GIP).

“Bago ako maging GIP intern medyo mahiyain po ako. Kapag po humaharap sa tao or iniinterview nag stutter po ako kapag nagsasalita,” admitted Ms. Carlos. During her government internship, she was assigned at the Local Civil Registrar’s Office and Human Resource Office, where she gained experience and became accustomed to dealing and conversing with people.

Nagpakita ng bayanihan ang mga benepisyaryo ng Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) kasama ang Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) ng San Andres, Romblon, Kabalikat Civicom San Andres Chapter, at mga opisyales ng barangay sa isinagawang clearing operation noong Hulyo 25, 2024.

Layunin ng operasyon na linisin ang mga dahon na nagkalat, pagkumpuni ng mga nasirang pampublikong gusali, at paghahakot ng mga nakahambalang na puno sa kalsada dulot ng habagat hatid ng bagyong Carina.

“Kaagapay po kanina ang mga benepisyaryo ng TUPAD sa clearing operations. Napakalaking tulong po sila sa bawat barangay ngayong panahon ng kalamidad,” saad ni Ginoong Arnel G. Tacasa, Public Employment Service Office (PESO) Manager ng San Andres.

Masigasig na nagtrabaho ang grupo upang alisin ang mga kalat at linisin ang mga daanan, na nagpakita ng kanilang dedikasyon para sa kapakanan ng komunidad at kaligtasan ng publiko.

Ang pagtutulungang ito ay nagpapakita ng lakas ng pagkakaisa at kahalagahan ng mga lokal na inisyatibo sa pagpapabuti ng buhay sa komunidad lalo na sa panahon ng kalamidad.

Magdiwang, Romblon – Eighty-two households were subjected to relocation due to the expansion of Ambulong Port in Magdiwang.

On May 29, 2024, through the help of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), one member per family was placed under its Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) Program.

TUPAD work program for these beneficiaries included site preparation of resettlement lots, construction, renovation, and improvement of their housing unit at Ambulong relocation sites for 30 days.

Laura Jane F. Fojas, a scholar under the Workers’ Organization Development Program (WODP) and the daughter of a solo parent, recently earned her Bachelor of Secondary Education majoring in English from Romblon State University-Main Campus.

Fojas was raised in San Vicente, Corcuera, Romblon, alongside her three siblings. As the second child, she saw firsthand how unstable their family’s finances were, and how it hindered her from attending college.

Her father’s membership in the Mabini National High School Parents Teachers Association (MNHS PTA) provided her with the opportunity to be qualified in the Isabelo Delos Reyes scholarship grant, for which she received a P3,500.00 monthly stipend that allowed her to continue her studies.

Her academic feat of getting an academic honor “𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏” during her graduation ceremony on June 5, 2024, can be ascribed to her determination to study incredibly hard, given that she was a scholar from first to her fourth year.

Fojas is planning to apply in private schools while waiting for the licensure examination for teachers.

Odiongan, Romblon- To provide learning sessions and technical assistance to micro establishments employing 1 to 9 employees, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Romblon Provincial Office conducted Technical and Advisory Visit (TAV) on June 10, 2024 at DOBS Events Place, Odiongan, Romblon.

“Yung mga maliliit na negosyo, huwag nating pahirapan, tulungan natin yan. Ang Technical and Advisory Visit ay isang developmental approach para kayo [employer] ay i-educate, matulungan para maka-comply, we will give you time to comply with labor standards,” DOLE MIMAROPA Assistant Regional Director Nicanor V. Bon said during the opening program.

A total of 61 micro establishment owners, employers, and workers participated in the activity which provided insights and advice on various aspects of General Labor Standards (GLS) and Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHS) compliance, and trained on Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) Training for Safety Officer 1.

Ensuring a high level of compliance with GLS, OSH, and other labor-related concerns, the activity included information dissemination on prevailing minimum wage in the MIMAROPA Region, payment of overtime pay, holiday pay, and other wage-related benefits and productivity enhancement, among others.

DOLE Labor Inspectors (LIs) and Assistant LIs assisted the micro establishments in preparing action plans to address any identified non-compliance and commended responsible employers in following existing rules and regulations.

Also present during the activity were, Mr. Philip D. Ruga- DOLE Romblon Provincial Director, Hon. Trina Alejandra Q. Firmalo- Fabic- Municipal Mayor of the Local Government Unit of Odiongan and Public Employment Service Office (PESO) Manager- Mr. Jan Edgar Firmalo to show support to micro establishments and its undertakings in labor laws compliance.

DOLE’s Technical and Advisory Visit (TAV) is a new approach that aims to boost industry capacity, ensure compliance with DOLE’s Department Order 238-23 provisions.

𝐃𝐎𝐋𝐄, 𝐋𝐆𝐔 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐜 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐮 𝐓𝐔𝐏𝐀𝐃 𝐜𝐮𝐦 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠

On June 3, 2024, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Romblon Provincial Office together with LGU Looc Public Employment Service Office (PESO) commenced the 10-day Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) cm Production Training on basket and handicrafts making.

Participated by 40 women members of Kababaihan: Lamang ang May Alam (KaLMA). This training aims to equip women with necessary skills on basket-weaving and basic handicrafts and in the long run create sustainable livelihoods and jobs. Skilled trainers namely Mapel S. Ursua and Maricel U. Esteron of Mother Lily Handicraft who run a business on basket-weaving and handicrafts shared their expertise.

TUPAD beneficiaries will receive wages amounting to Php 395.00 per day as the prevailing minimum wage in the MIMAROPA Region or Php 3,950.00 for 10-days work rendered on skills training.

After the training, the participants will be provided with additional assistance to be registered as a workers association in order to avail the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program to start their livelihood undertakings. The association will be given livelihood grants such as tools, jigs and equipment necessary for their operations to create diverse products of baskets and handicrafts.

TUPAD cm Production Training is one of the Department’s initiatives in preparing individuals and associations by providing emergency employment and enhancing their skills to be able to create sustainable livelihoods.

In an effort to foster trust and transparency between the government and its citizens, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Romblon Provincial Office actively participated in the Dagyaw Town Hall Meeting.

This event, spearheaded by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) MIMAROPA, took place on May 31, 2024, at St. Pius Events Place in Dapawan, Odiongan, Romblon.

The Dagyaw Town Hall Meeting brought together various stakeholders, including government agencies, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), associations, cooperatives, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Their collective goal was to address both national and local issues affecting the MIMAROPA Region, with a specific focus on agriculture and livelihood challenges faced by Romblomanon residents.

Ms. Christine M. Espinosa, Senior Labor and Employment Officer (LEO) of DOLE Romblon Provincial Office, played a pivotal role as one of the panel discussants. She engaged with participants, addressing their questions and providing clarifications regarding DOLE’s initiatives. Notably, the discussion centered on DOLE’s commitment to granting employment and livelihood opportunities to qualified beneficiaries. Additionally, the event served as a platform to promote the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP) among participants seeking interventions for their proposed livelihood projects.

During the meeting, Mr. Ronald M. Geronimo, Romblon Provincial Public and Employment Service Office (PESO) Manager presented essential Labor Market Information (LMI) specific to the Province of Romblon. He also highlighted significant milestones achieved through employment programs like the Government Internship Program (GIP) and the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES). These initiatives contribute to empowering the local workforce and addressing unemployment challenges.

Additionally, Mr. Geronimo emphasized the implementation and impact of the DOLE’s Kabuhayan Program that aims to enhance livelihood opportunities, uplift communities, and promote sustainable economic growth.

The Dagyaw Town Hall Meeting serves as a safe space for meaningful dialogue at the grassroots level. By bringing together government officials, community members, and various stakeholders, it ensures that voices are heard, concerns are addressed, and collaborative solutions are explored.

To capacitate Barangay units in promoting the rights and privileges of domestic workers, the Department of Labor and Employment MIMAROPA conducts Kasambahay Advocacy at Odiongan, Romblon.
Technical Support and Services Division (TSSD) Chief Marjun S. Moreno discusses the salient features of Republic Act No. 10361 or also known as Batas Kasambahay. Brgy. Chairpersons of the municipalities of Alcantara, Calatrava, Ferrol, Looc, Odiongan, San Agustin, San Andres, Santa Fe, at Santa Maria participate in the activity.

Prior to the discussion, Regional Director Naomi Lyn C. Abellana uttered a message, emphasizing the importance of Brgy. Chairpersons in handling and resolving issues involving the domestic workers in their community and that they can seek help from DOLE thru the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) in their respective municipality.
