The age-old knowledge to let the wound "breathe" is actually wrong! Wounds need the perfect moisture balance in order to optimize healing. Too dry and it can prolong the healing process and the exposure to air also exposes it to dirt and other contaminants. Too moist and it can macerate the normal skin and even make the wound bigger. Yes, they can still heal if the moisture balance is not optimum, but the point is to make the wounds heal at the fastest rate possible. Shorter healing time means less chance of infection, less dressing changes, less pain, less trips to the clinics, less costs.... the list goes on.

We're back with our myth buster series. This week, we revisit how our grandparents treated our wounds, a concoction taught from one generation to the next- boiled guava (bayabas) leaves.

Gone are the days when we use to dread burn wounds because of the expected sequelae of keloids and thick scars.

This week, let's dissect the myth of advanced wound care dressings being expensive.

Consider these facts:

1.) Advanced wound care dressings only need to be changed every 3-5 days compared to daily dressing changes, which equates to less transportation costs, less dressing needs costs, less visits to the doctor, less time and opportunity costs lost.

2.) Advanced wound care dressings have sustained release of antimicrobials meaning less chance of the wound getting infected. Less frequent changes also lead to less exposure of the wound to external environment and contamination. Less chance of infection equates to less need for antibiotics, which cost a lot.

3.) Advanced wound care dressings maintain perfect moisture balance so the wound is neither too dry nor macerated, resulting to lesser chance of needing operations. Perfect moisture balance also expedites wound healing. Surgeries and debridements can cost a lot so being able to avoid these with advanced wound care dressings saves you a lot of money!

4.) At the end of the day, can you put a price tag on the pain experienced on each dressing change? Can you put a price tag on the comfort afforded while your wound is healing? Can you put a price tag on a lost limb that would have been saved? Can you put a price tag on still being able to walk because your foot/leg was saved from being amputated?

I guess it's clear... the myth of advanced wound care dressings being expensive is officially DEBUNKED!

A wound that is not progressing in terms of healing is more susceptible to infection and may be putting the patient at risk.
Such wounds may need skin grafting. Skin grafting is a procedure where the plastic surgeon expertly harvests just the right thickness of skin from a donor site, which will then be used to close the nonhealing wound. The nonhealing wound and the donor site will then fully heal 7 days after the procedure.
