HOW ARE CATARACTS DIAGNOSED?

Your ophthalmologist will conduct a comprehensive history taking and eye examination.

This includes refraction and visual acuity testing to assess the level of clarity of your vision.

Ancillary instruments may be used to detect the presence of significant eye diseases, such as glaucoma or retina/nerve problems, aside from the cataract.

If deemed necessary, eyedrops may be applied during the examination to dilate the pupils and facilitate the clinical assessment.

HAVE REGULAR EYE EXAMS AND VISION TESTING

Everyone regardless of age should have regular eye exams and vision testing to maintain eye health.

These may include visual acuity testing, refraction assessment, eye muscle tests, slit-lamp examination, retinal examination, and certain clinic tests to screen for other diseases, such as glaucoma and dry eyes.

EYE TESTS AND ASSESSMENTS FOR GLAUCOMA

A complete eye exam is the only sure way to diagnose glaucoma.

To diagnose glaucoma, your ophthalmologist will measure your eye pressure, inspect your eye's drainage system, examine your optic nerve for damage, test your field of vision, take a picture or computer measurement of your optic nerve, and measure the thickness of your cornea.
