Now, more than ever, do we need children and adults who are lifelong learners, one with nature, and stewards of the earth.

“Maria Montessori believed adolescents should be given the opportunity to experience self-worth through real and important work—a process she called valorization – providing the opportunity for adolescents to realize they are strong, worthy, and capable of effort.”

The year-old, student-led, Montessori Golf team, led by their co-captains, expressed the desire to help defray the chemotherapy costs of one of our teachers with a major fundraiser. Thus was born the first Monte Masters Golf Tournament, held at Villamor Golf Club on July 22nd.

Together with the help of two younger 8th graders, the team worked all through their summer break to ensure a successful event. Under the supervision of just a couple adults, the team managed to get a good amount of sponsors and received the support of 80 enthusiastic players on tournament day, who came despite the rains!

Congratulations to our adolescents for this ambitious and worthwhile endeavor. We honor the valor you exemplified in hosting the first ever Monte Masters Golf Tournament. Teen power!

On its second year in a row, our new annual Advent skit kicked off the season’s traditions. Children and teens played their roles in the nativity scene last December 1 with the community joining in chorus to Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and Angels We Have Heard on High.

Special thanks to Melina May Napa and the parents of the cast for attending rehearsals, guiding the children, and sourcing costumes 🌟

“I am a peacemaker. Peace is not a state, it is an action I will take everyday of my life. I will always strive for peace with a respect for myself, for others, for our world, and our environment.”
- The MMCS Montessori Promise

We kicked off our virtues project last September with the virtue of peacefulness. As Montessori is an education for peace, we felt it was the most appropriate one to start with. As we go through the year, we’ll be focusing on a new virtue every other week.

Happy Birthday Maria Montessori!

As we approach September, national peace month, we remember that a Montessori education is and has always been an education for peace.

The faculty and staff have been busy these past weeks preparing the campus and individual classrooms for the coming school year. Last July 18, they looked inwards and prepared themselves with the guidance of the esteemed Montessori educator and trainer, Dr. Karen Bennetts of the Sydney Montessori Training Center.

The group was given a refresher on what it means to be a Prepared Adult in and out of the classroom. Hand in hand with the physical preparation of our Montessori environment, MMCS is committed to building spiritual foundations through Dr. Montessori’s spiritual preparation of the adult.

The Odyssey is an extraordinary literary work that holds immense historical and cultural significance. Credited to the legendary Greek poet Homer, this epic narrative follows the tumultuous journey of Odysseus, the revered king of Ithaca, as he strives to return home over a grueling period of ten years, post the Trojan War. The Odyssey stands as a timeless masterpiece, renowned for its exploration of enduring themes that continue to captivate readers, including the concepts of heroism, loyalty, and the power of individual choice.

At MMCS, we believe that our students embark on their own odysseys, akin to Odysseus's quest. Through transformative experiences such as educational trips to breathtaking destinations like El Nido, Palawan and Melbourne, we strive to foster the growth of our students' independence and instill within them a profound sense of responsibility. These journeys extend beyond the confines of the classroom, allowing our students to broaden their horizons, gain worldly perspectives, and acquire knowledge that extends far beyond textbooks. Our ultimate aspiration is for these young minds to leverage their experiential learning and utilize it in creating remarkable contributions to the community, be it through innovative projects or meaningful initiatives that truly make a difference.

Adolescent Program Palawan Odyssey ✈️🏝️

Last March 27-April 1, a few of our Adolescent Program teens got to visit El Nido, Palawan. There they visited The Earth School, Doc Bimbo’s Farm, and participated in many enriching activities.

“The odyssey was fun. I got to practice a bunch of different skills like communicating with locals, responsibility, independence, etc. I also got to do a lot of activities I don't really do with my family when we go out.” – Ethan, Grade 9

Some of the lower elementary children visited the post office! 📮

The activity stemmed from their friendly letter writing lesson. The group practiced their writing skills and snail mailed the letters to each other. Part of the activity involved carefully writing out the recipient’s address, talking to the people at the counter to buy their stamps, and dropping their letters into the mailbox. Then they patiently, but eagerly, waited for their letters to arrive📬

The AP went full-STEAM ahead to celebrate the wonders of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math in a culminating activity that showcased their curiosity and skills last February. It was an opportunity for the teens to come together as a community and share their knowledge to the younger children. Truly a "Learning by Doing" experience hallmarked by that Montessorian spirit of authentic creativity.

Materials Monday: The Wooden Hierarchical Material

The Wooden Hierarchical Material introduces the children to new categories of numbers in the decimal system. Children in casa or lower elementary gain an understanding of numbers beyond one thousand, and up to one million. Through the use of the material, they receive and impression of both the geometric and numerical representation of each category.

Materials Monday: The Color Tablets

– Dr. Maria Montessori

Materials Monday:

In lower elementary, the checkerboard is one of the materials used for long multiplication. It is a large rectangular board with green, blue, and red squares representing the hierarchies in the decimal system. The children use it to work on problems with multipliers up to the thousands, making the abstract concept of multiplication concrete.
