The 1st National Research Conference organized by Laguna University with the theme "Synergizing Research for a Sustainable Future: Collaborative Solutions for Global Challenges is happening now with more than 600 participants in Zoom.

Dr. Ruel Maningas, the UA&P School of Management Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and Research and Program Director of Master in Applied Business Analytics (MABA) served as the conference keynote speaker. He shared his thoughts, insights, and lived experience through the topic "Leveraging Digital Innovation for Sustainable Transformation: A Roadmap to Achieving SDGs in Higher Education"

Key points that were highlighted in the speech include the notions of digital innovation, digital transformation, and digital literacy, the importance of a whole-institution approach to digital innovation, case studies of successful campus-wide digital initiatives, overcoming challenges and barriers to digital adoption, the potential of emerging technologies and their impact on the student experience, teaching and learning, and research, and how can HEIs contribute to SDGs through digital innovation and digital transformation practices.

MABA Alumni Update

The Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) recently hosted its 3rd Philippine Data Analytics Conference, co-organized with Mapua University. The event was held on September 20, 2024, at Mapua University-Makati Campus. Academic Partners are Bulacan State University, Western Mindanao State University, and Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology.

Themed “Data Analytics in the Fifth Industrial Revolution: Innovating Industry and Academic Practices,” the conference aimed to highlight the critical role of data analytics in both industry and academic settings, especially in the context of rapid technological advancements. The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including researchers, industry practitioners, and policymakers. These stakeholders gathered to showcase and discuss innovations in data analytics that are shaping the future of various sectors.

MABA Alumnus, Mr. Wenzel Vaughn Pestaño, presented his paper entitled “Breakout! Breaking the Chains of Standard Marketing,” under the sub-theme “Data Analytics for E-commerce and Finance.” This paper explored the significant shifts in consumer behavior and market dynamics within the personal care industry during the pandemic. It emphasized the importance of adapting business models to navigate uncertainty and maintain competitiveness. Key strategies discussed included updating customer segments and refining marketing approaches to enhance engagement, retention, and overall business outcomes. The insights from this project are poised to help businesses strengthen their market position, improve customer loyalty, and drive sustained growth in the post-pandemic era.

The conference effectively highlighted how data analytics can transform the way we tackle contemporary challenges and capitalize on new opportunities in both industry and academia. (WVP)

The University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) through its Master in Applied Business Analytics (MABA) Program rolled out its first ever "LSEG Workspace Day" for faculty, staff, and students on September 19, 2024 at the PLDT Hall, UA&P Campus in Pasig City.

The London Stock Exchange Group plc, also known as LSEG, is a global provider of financial markets data and infrastructure. With over 40,000 customers and 400,000 end users across approximately 190 markets, it enables customers to draw crucial insights through data, feeds, analytics, AI and workflow solutions. UA&P is a subscriber of LSEG Data and Analytics since October 2023.

Participants to this event were faculty members, staff, and students from the School of Management (SMN), School of Economics (SEC), School of Sciences and Engineering (SSE), School of Media and Marketing (SCM), and other stakeholders from various units of the University - Executive Office (EO), Financial Management and Reporting (FMR), Library, University Research Office (URO), Data Protection Office (DPO), Center for Social Responsibility (CSR), Corporate Planning and Review (CPR), Business Process and Analytics (BPA), Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Center for Research and Communication (CRC), and Continuing Real-World Education (CORE).

Three representatives from the LSEG office in the Philippines namely, Ms. Laura Tudlong, Ms. Jerulyn Ko, and Ms. Jam Santillan facilitated the participants' walkthrough of the LSEG Workspace and simulations on various topics such as the Workspace Menu Options that consists of main screen tabs, overviews of countries, commodities, FX and Money Market, Fixed Income, Equities, Merger and Acquisition (M&A), Company Financials, ESG Data Coverage, and many more. On August 3 & 10, the MABA program had a two-day Analytics Bootcamp for the incoming batch of new students. It is designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge required to navigate the complex world of data analytics, regardless of their prior experience. We thank Mr. Ace Bonita and Mr. Francis Viernes for facilitating this year's bootcamp.

Dr. Ruel Maningas, UA&P Master in Applied Business Analytics (MABA) Program Director and School of Management Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and Research, was one of the speakers during the Webinar on "Using the Philippine Skills Framework for Analytics and AI held on June 10 via Zoom as organized by the Analytics and AI Association of the Philippines (AAP) and the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT).

This webinar introduces the Philippine Skills Framework for Analytics & AI (PSF-AAI) and presents use cases where academic programs and corporate organizations align with it. Aside from Dr. Maningas, other esteemed panelists came from AAP, DICT UST, RCBC, and GCash. The event was moderated by Mr. Sherwin Pelayo, AAP Executive Director and MABA Industry Lecturer and Consultant.

This event is part of the series of webinars in celebration of the National ICT Month this June.

Congratulations to First Gen Corporation for completing the 6-day Certificate Course in Data Governance (CCDG).

The course culminating activities and closing rites were held last May 17 at Rockwell Business Center Tower 3, Ortigas Center, Pasig, M.M.

Four groups presented their respective data governance frameworks and multi-year plans and programs aimed at sustaining the data-driven culture in the corporation and the conglomerate as a whole.

Dr. Anna Maria Mendoza, Dean of UA&P School of Management, and Mr. Josemaria Likha Umali, the Head of Data Analytics and Management of First Gen Energy Solutions, Inc., delivered their welcome remarks and congratulatory messages, respectively.

The CCDG is being offered as an in-company and a public course by the UA&P School of Management's Professional Education in Business Analytics (PrEBA) in cooperation with the UA&P Southeast Asia Business Studies (SEABS). The UA&P Continuing Real-World Education (CORE) provides the learning management system for the course.

The Philippine Skills Framework (PSF) for Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI), together with the other four PSFs under the ICT umbrella was officially launched today at Brittany Hotel, BGC.

Mr. Sherwin Pelayo, the Analytics & Artificial Intelligence Association of the Philippines (AAP) Executive Director and MABA Industry Lecturer and Consultant presented the sector's PSF during the launch.

Dr. Ruel Maningas, the UA&P Master in Applied Business Analytics (MABA) Program Director and Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and Research, of the School of Management attended the event. He also served as one of the PSF's validators.

Last April 12, the First Gen Corporation started to embark into honing their capability in data governance through the 6-day Certificate Course in Data Governance. This course is a pioneering 2-module certificate program on data governance designed for data owners/stewards and managers, data scientists and analysts, and experienced data professionals. It is a core component of overall data management strategy and security and the unstoppable trend in globalizing organizations in a continually evolving business environment.

The course is being offered by the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) School of Management (SMN) through the Professional Education in Business Analytics and the Southeast Asia Business Studies (SEABS). The UA&P Continuing Real-World Education (CORE) is hosting the course Learning Management System (LMS).

Four faculty members from the UA&P-SMN namely Dr. Ruel Maningas, Mr. Sherwin Pelayo, Mr. Melecio Valerio, and Mr. Francis Viernes serve as the course resource persons/facilitators.

Last week, our students and professors attended a seminar on "Exploring Deep Learning Frontiers: A Guide for Graduate Capstone Projects".

The lecture is intended for all MABA students, especially those starting their capstone projects in deep learning for computer vision and natural language processing. Its goal is to inspire innovative projects and provide guidance on translating theoretical knowledge into impactful applications, encouraging collaboration and interdisciplinary exploration.

We thank Mr. Elmer Peramo, Senior Science Research Specialist at the Department of Science and Technology – Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) for sharing his valuable knowledge on the application of deep learning. Mr. Peramo is also a part-time lecturer, capstone technical mentor/consultant, and capstone panelist of the MABA Program.
