𝐆𝐎𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐋: John 20:1-9

𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: The Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday ushers in the Easter Triduum of Christ's passion and death (Good Friday), burial (Holy Saturday), and resurrection (Easter Sunday). The Easter Triduum is the most solemn celebration in the liturgical year when we commemorate the paschal mystery of Christ in which we participate through baptism and Holy Eucharist. The renewal of baptismal promises on Easter Vigil and in all the Masses on Easter Sunday culminates our Lenten observance. The sprinkling with holy water and the lighted candles in our hands evoke the most significant moment in our lives: our baptism when God claimed us as his sons and daughters. The joy of the resurrection of Our Lord flows over to the next fifty days of the Easter Season until Pentecost Sunday. The chanting of the Alleluia and the lighted paschal candle keep alive the solemn and memorable celebration of the Easter Vigil. The biblical readings and prefaces remind us that the risen Christ is always present among us and that we can recognize him in the proclaimed word and in the breaking of bread that is the Eucharist.

Two important feasts unfold the other aspects of Christ's resurrection:
Ascension and Pentecost. After forty days Christ ascended into heaven bringing up with him the redeemed human race. In a world oppressed by misery the Ascension enlivens our hope that heaven is our final home.

Seated at the right hand of the Father, Jesus Christ sent down the Holy Spirit upon the Church on the day of Pentecost. On this day the Holy Spirit sent forth the Apostles into the whole world to preach the gospel and to baptize. Pentecost is the culmination of Christ's death and resurrection. He ascended into heaven in order to send the Holy Spirit that would continue among us the work of salvation that he had begun. We exist in the era of the Holy Spirit. In some way the sacrament of confirmation is like our own Pentecost; for it is through this sacrament that the Holy Spirit anoints us to go forth and proclaim around us in word and good example the gospel of Christ.

Happy Easter Jameans!

𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: Alleluia! Alleluia! The Lord is risen! Alleluia! This is the night when life has triumphed over death. With this night, we are completing our faith journey during this Paschal Triduum and our forty-day Lenten journey. After having received the mandate to lay down our life for others as exemplified by Jesus and after receiving the Spirit handed down by Jesus to the saving community he formed, we welcome the Easter grace in awe and wonder! The Easter Vigil Mass is very rich in liturgical symbols as the Liturgy of Fire, Liturgy of Water, Liturg of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist are celebrated in one night - conveying the Easter joy! We are indeed recipient of such an amazing grace! The Gospel of Mark narrates that the women found empty the tomb where Jesus hads been laid. Upon entering the tomb, they saw a young man in white telling them that JHesus had been raised. He also instructed them to tell Peter and the other disciples that Jesus would go ahead of them in Galilee where he would meet the disciples, Jesus is ahead of everything. We have to stay behind him. With Jesus in the lead, there is nothing more to fear!

𝐆𝐎𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐋: John 18:1—19:42

𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: Today is Good Friday. This is the day when Jesus laid down his life. This is also the day when a new family, characterized by a new relationship, flowed out from Jesus' life-giving Spirit. Before Jesus died, he said that it is finished. The use of the Greek word tetelestai, "it is finished," connotes that Jesus had already completed his mission but its effects continue to be experienced by the people he saved. Moreover, it is interesting to note that the Greek expression paradōken to pneuma, meaning "he handed down the Spirit," implies that Jesus, upon bowing his head, handed down the Spirit to the community of disciples standing at the foot of the cross. This suggests that the mission of Jesus must continue with and through the members of the new family he raised when he was exalted on the cross. We Christians, are the members of this new family resulting from Jesus' offering of his own life. However, many of us, are already contented with seeing ourselves as the community of the saved. We should not forget that when Jesus handed down the Spirit to us, we have also become a saving community.

𝐆𝐎𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐋: John 13:1-15

𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: Today is Holy Thursday, also known as Maundy Thursday. Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum which means "commandment." Today, we ponder on Jesus' new commandment which is love-mandate. As Christians, we are mandated that we love one another as Jesus has loved us. And now, we are reminded of Jesus' words when he said that there is no greater love than to lay down one's life for others. Hence, Jesus has set an example not merely to dramatize the event of the feet-washing but to truly live up to the challenge of laying down our lives for one another. The putting off and putting on of Jesus' garment also symbolizes the giving up and taking up of Jesus' life. No one can take Jesus' life away from him but he can give it up. It is a decision. As we enter the Paschal Triduum, let us recommit ourselves to making decisions as our concrete responses to Jesus' mandate.

𝐆𝐎𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐋: Matthew 26:14-25

𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: Today is Holy Wednesday and we continue our faith journey while trying to break the shackles of selfishness. Today's Gospel narrates how Judas Iscariot went to the chief priests, asking how much he would get from them if he would hand Jesus over to them. Why would Judas be wanting for more? Evil is present when one is not contented with what is given. Envy is the partner of selfishness. Together, they generate betrayal. How many relationships, to our knowledgem, have already been broken because of envy and selfishness? Christians are called to build relationships and not to destory relationships. Christians are challenged to create a climate of trust and not an atmosphere of betrayal. In these holy days, we are also called to be instruments of healing whenever there is a broken relationship due to betrayal. Betrayal is painful but healing is always a possibility. As the Paschal Triduum is fast approaching, may we be given the grace to truly look inside our deepest core while sincerely asking God to free us from selfishness and envy and heal us of any would brought about by an experience of betrayal.

𝐆𝐎𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐋: John 13:21-33, 36-38

𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: It was night. This is how the narrator of the Gospel of John described the event after Judas Iscariot had left Jesus and the other disciples during the meal characterized by the washing of the disciples' feet. This event will be followed by Judas' betrayal of Jesus. Night connotes darkness. We may reflect that the darkness here does not only refer to the predicament of Judas Iscariot for the wrong decision he made but also to the condition of the rest of the other disciples. While Judas made the wrong choice, the other disciples still needed to grow in faith. In the Gospel of John, knowledge connotes unbelief. The other disciples were still lacking in faith. They lacked knowledge. Should they have known and understood what was going on between Jesus and Judas when they were at table, they certainly would not allow Judas to go out of the cenacle. Evil besets our society simply because we lack needed knowledge. Proper knowledge leads to sound decisions, and sound decisions lead to good actions. On this Holy Tuesday, may we truly grow in faith. It is through an informed faith that we are strengthened to sacrifice for others.

𝐆𝐎𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐋: John 12:1-11

𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: Today is Holy Monday, The Gospel for today narrates Jesus' feet being anointed by Mary of Bethany. It was in a context of a dinner offered by Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary, whom Jesus raised back to life. Mary anointed the feet of Jesus with expensive perfume while Judas Iscariot was harboring ill thoughts about what Mary did for Jesus. The narration makes it clear that Judas, the betrayer, had no real concern for the poor. He was a thief and was taking money from the common purse for his own selfish benefit. The deed of Judas runs in contrast with the deed of Jesus. Jesus would be offering his life for the salvation of the world while Judas took from what was not his to preserve himself. Our present world is characterized by selfishness. Many would give in to the temptation of self-preservation at other people's expense. Jesus taught us the value of self-sacrifice.

𝐆𝐎𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐋: Mark 14: 1 – 15: 47

𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍:

Today, Palm Sunday, we enter into the Holy Week. The readings remind us of the passion and death of our Savior. Today and throughout the week we do well to reflect on the passion of the Lord, on the price He paid for our redemption. The Gospel speaks in detail about the passion of the Lord. The reading of these details should help us to understand better the gravity of our sins which caused these sufferings, the immensity of the love of the Lord has for us which made Him willingly undergo these sufferings, and how we should be careful not to add to His sufferings through our sins.

A time when millions of minds will be focused upon the last hours of the earthly life of Jesus; time to engrave in our hearts with greater clarity the image of a God who is with us, who doesn’t find anything human alien, a servant God who washes our feet and heals our wounds; an obedient God who listens and responds to His Father in love. Yet an aspect that stands out so sharply is the nature of the obedience of Jesus. For Jesus, obedience is a listening in love to God, the beloved Father. In this listening there is neither a moment of distance nor fear, or hesitation no doubt, but only the unconditional and unrestrained love that comes from the Father. Jesus’ response to this love is likewise unconditional, unlimited and unrestrained. We will misunderstand Jesus’ going into the world of suffering and pain and His giving Himself as a servant id we perceive these actions as the heroic initiatives of a son who wants to prove Himself to a Father whose love has to be earned, or as the anxious fulfillment of a command given by a Father whose will must be respected. Rather we see in these actions a divine listening to a divine love, a loving response to a loving mission and a free Yes to a free command.
