Love is in the air π
What better way to profess your love than by giving chocolates? π«
It may be slightly outdated, but chocolate contains some health benefits. There is a compound in chocolate that has mental and physical benefits. Theobromine can be found in the cacao bean, and higher quantities of this can be found in dark chocolate. Theobromine can naturally lower blood pressure and improve blood flow, protecting the heart π«. It also has a similar structure to caffeine β and serves as a stimulant, providing an energy boost for both mind and body. Lastly, eating chocolate can elevate a person's mood as theobromine acts as a mood boost of relaxation and positivity π (Buckley, 2021). Huh, no wonder having chocolate always makes you melt and have a smile on your face! π
Aside from chocolate, you can also feel a smile on your face by accomplishing and learning fun and cool chemistry experiments as you join us in this race against time in Chemystery! And if your team is up to the challenge to aim for the top, you may win some cash prizes! π€πΈπ° WHAAAAAAT?!!! You heard us right! We will give cash prizes to the top THREE teams who can pass through level one and win the race using their intellect, skills, and luck! If this sounds interesting, sign-ups are still open until FEBRUARY 15 through the following link: bit.ly/CMY23Registration!
Stay tuned to our upcoming phase one event where we test your quiz bee knowledge to see if you have what it takes to face head on our Souper Awesome Race! ππ₯

Remember chewing bubblegum and enjoying that minty freshness? ππΏ
Mint is used in many refreshing drinks πΉ, ice cream π¨, and candies π¬ to give a cool and minty flavor. This is because mint contains menthol. Menthol exudes a cool feeling due to the chemical reaction within the receptors of our tongues. The receptor proteins in our tongue π
are designed to open the ion channels when a stimulus is detected. The ion channels relay a sensory feeling to the brain π§ . The menthol in mint causes the TRPM8 receptors to open. These receptors are responsible for the βcoolβ π and βcoldβ π₯Ά feelings being relayed to your brain (Currin, 2019).
But if you are looking for something cooler, wait no further! Chemystery has more in store as it opens the floor to an online quiz and even Souper Amaize-ing Race on campus! Questions and puzzles will be solved by teams of three to have a more and merrier experience with friends!

Valentineβs Day 1οΈβ£4οΈβ£ is so close, and many are thinking of plans to make the day memorable! π
Some may try to confess or plan a date, but they find it tough to choose. We are here to help you out! Why not go to a fancy schmancy Japanese restaurant π where you will get an umami experience trying their delicious delicacies? And maybe by the end of this dateβ¦ you can umami-n to crush! π²π³
But first, what is umami? Umami is a βsavory flavorβ that describes the taste of glutamic acid, a compound found in meat π₯©, mushrooms π, and soy sauce π«. In other words, it describes the taste of monosodium glutamate (MSG) as MSG is chemically produced from glutamic acid (Negulescu, 2018). It does not necessarily mean that too much "very umami" food will cause health risks, but it is good to keep in check the amount of MSG you eat from instant food and other produced goods. π₯«
But if you couples out there still want something more exciting and thrilling, Chemystery is open for sign-ups for the Hybrid Amazing Race! Join in with your significant other π and bring a friend to tag along (not as a third wheel, okay?). Or if you are a single pringle, why not come join us with your friends π§βπ€βπ§ in partaking in fun and cool chemistry challenges to strengthen your love and friendship with each other? Who knows you may meet someone special when you join as well! π
What are you waiting for? Join us by filling up this form here: bit.ly/CMY23Registration! This will remain open until February 11.

Are you ready to uncover the secrets of Chemystery? π§
Have nothing to think about for the New Year? Eat something sweet π¬ to get on the right track! We suggest having some liquorice to keep the brain π§ energized, but one must acquire a taste π
for liquorice as some may find it displeasing to their tongue. Why is that?
Liquorice comes from the root of the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant used to make liquors πΈ and medicine π (Holohan, 2012). This root contains glycyrrhizin, a natural sweetener 30-50 times sweeter than sucrose (Zeece, 2020). So, it is advisable to eat this candy in moderation. Because of its very saccharine taste due to the compound, the sweetness lingers when liquorice is consumed, making others displeased and disgusted π€’ by the overwhelming and sickening taste. However, some may find this delicious. It is up to you whether you want to eat it or not. But give it a try, you may find that you like it! π
If you are still looking for something to challenge yourself and your brain, we harbor good news ποΈ: Chemystery is coming around the corner! Make sure to gather your friends, form a group of three, then sign up through this link: bit.ly/CMY23Registration. Keep your eyes and ears open to any information regarding our upcoming events and surprising challenges coming your way!

Feeling bored π© and wanting something to spice πΆ up your routine? Why not have a go in some hot red chilies or wasabi to bring up the heat? π₯ Yes, who needs cool π§ treats if you can just Netflix, chill, and eat some spicy food! π₯΅
Red chilies contain capsaicin, while wasabi, mustard, and horseradish contain allyl isothiocyanate. But did you know that allyl isothiocyanate is very volatile, and receptors for this compound can be found in our noses? This explains why we feel its effects in our noses as we eat wasabi. On the other hand, capsaicin is oil-based and has receptors on the tongue (Negulescu, 2018). Therefore, we feel the burn of chilies on our tongues π
and the wasabi in our noses π. Cool, right!
Speaking of heat, do you want to feel the burning π₯ sensation of solving puzzles π§©, answering questions, and achieving challenges in chemistry? Well, stay tuned πΊ and look out for our upcoming announcement on Chemysteryβs newest game as of yet. For now, sign-ups for this yearβs Chemystery are still open until February 11! Register your team using this link: bit.ly/CMY23Registration.
Look forward to our announcement of prizes and grand reveal of the games we have in store for you! See you all soon!
