SOLEMNITY OF ST. JOSEPH CALASANZ
*****
Joseph Calasanz was born in Peralta de la Sal [Spain] on September 11, 1557. He was the youngest of eight children [five girls and three boys] of Pedro Calasanz and Maria Gaston Sala, of a family belonging to the lower ranks. He received a good education at home and then at the school of Peralta.
After completing his primary school in his hometown, he was sent to boarding school in Estadilla to study Latin, Humanities and Rhetoric. As soon as he completed his classical studies at Estadilla he took up philosophy and canon law at Lerida and merited the degree of Doctor of Laws, and then with honors completed his Theological course at Valencia and Alcala de Henares. Later, Calasanz received his Doctorate in Theology in Barcelona.
His decision to become a priest, in the beginning, was quit hard because his father Pedro wanted him to marry and perpetuate the family. God interfered a sickness, which soon brought Calasanz to the brink of the grave. On his recovery, his father allowed him to receive the sacred Order. He was ordained priest on December 17, 1583, in Sanahuja [Catalan Region] by Bishop Hugo Ambrose de Moncada, Ordinary of Urgel.
Calasanz began his labor as priest as secretary, confessor and examiner to some Bishops, chapter secretary, master of ceremonies at the cathedral, chief of staff of the Bishop, parish priest, archpriest, diocesan reformer and procurator with faculties as vicar-general.
A few years after serving to some dioceses in Spain, he embarked for Rome [1592], seeking to know himself better and also to improve his economic situation. Instead, he found God in the poor and abandoned boys of Trastevere. In a letter he writes:
I have found in Rome the definitive way to serve God in the children and youth, and I will never leave it for anything in the world."
In 1597 at the Church of St. Dorothy, he began the first free school in Europe. Pope Clement the VIII gave an annual contribution and many others shared the good work, so that in a short time Calasanz had about a thousand children under his charge. He devoted himself for the neglected children for the rest of his life in the education of piety and learning. This is his unique contribution to the reform of the Church and the Society of his time.
To assure continuity to his work, he founded The Order of the Pious Schools (Ordinis Scholarum Piarum), a Religious Order of Priests and Brothers, under the motto of Piety and Learning. However, much envy and opposition arose against him, to his school and to his new institute, but all were overcome in time.
He died in Rome, a faithful son of the Church and a true friend of forsaken children in the House of Saint Pantaleo, in 1648. His beatification was solemnized on August 7, 1748. He was canonized on July 16, 1767 by Pope Clement VIII. With God's grace Pope Pius XII proclaimed the Universal Patron of All Catholic Schools in 1948.
His liturgical feast is celebrated every August 25. In Calasanzian Centers the feast is also celebrated on November 27.
FIVE FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ST. JOSEPH CALASANZ
~~~~~
1. Started the first public school
+ In the spring of 1597, moved by compassion toward the poor and abandoned children, visited the Roman neighborhood of Trastevere and in the parish of Santa Dorotea he discovered a small parochial school, which made hatching in his heart the decisive way of his life. Thus he founded the βfirst popular and free school in Europeβ. His educational goal was summarized in the slogan: βPiety and Lettersβ, which today we can translate as βfaith and cultureβ. He called his work the βPious Schoolsβ.
2. A friend of Galileo Galilei
+ Center of his educational ideas were the respect for the personality of each child and seeing in them the image of Christ. Through his Pious Schools, he tried to serve the intellectual, physical and spiritual needs of young people at his care. Calasanz was a friend of Galileo, the prominent scientist, and attached great importance to science and mathematics, as well as humanities, in the education of youth. He even send to Galileo some of his Florence Pairists to profit from his teachings. Others even becomes his private secretary and assistants.
3. First proponent of active and preventive methods
+ Active method: To maintain and favor it, he stressed the emulation among the students, without teaching extremities that could be pernicious. Along this line, he did not want to incite rivalry among individuals, but rather he proposed competence among groups of students. In this way, he wanted to keep the advantages, avoiding the negative aspects such method is exposed to. How was this emulation realized? It is realized through discussions that were frequently held in class and in the works the students were performing. The best ones (outputs in Latin or Italian vernacular language compositions, and calligraphy) were exhibited to be seen by other students for inspiration and motivation. Calasanz had the custom that some of these be given to benefactors of school, so that they might admire the accomplishments and progress of students. Others are used to beautify/decorate the classrooms.
+ Preventive method: Calasanz wrote to Cardinal Tonti:
"Education is the most meritorious because, with the fullness of charity, it establishes and puts in practice in the entire Church the most effective, preventive, and healing remedy for evil. It is incentive and light to do good, for youth of all classes - and hence for all men who must necessarily pass through the first stage of life - accomplished by human and spiritual education, good habits and manners, with illumination from God and with the experience of the world" (n. 9). How did the schools prevent sin? By keeping the students as busy as possible. It is true that he arranged the schedule of the schools according to the custom of his time. But when we look at it, it is evident that he wanted a full day, without leaving time for idleness.
4. Founded the first Order of priests dedicated to education of children and youth.
+ Paul V, recognized his community as a religious congregation in 1627 with a Brief, "Ad ea per quae". Moreover, in 1621 the congregation, which was spreading throughout Italy, became papally approved Rligious Order.
5. Honored as Universal Patron of Christian Schools
+ Pope Pius XII declared him in 1948 βHeavenly Patron of all Christian popular schoolsβ. Pope John Paul II said that Saint Joseph Calasanz took as a model Christ and tried to convey to young people, as well as profane science, the wisdom of the Gospel teaching them to grasp Godβs loving action.
