Our Story
The Community Crafts Association of the Philippines, Inc. (CCAP) was formally organized in May 1973 with Mr. Antonio R. Infante as founding President together with twenty (21) members representing the religious and socio-civic.
The purpose then was to contribute to the social and economic progress of the country’s urban and rural poor, with a particular focus on the community craft workers. It started out giving capacity-building to them in the form of product design and development as well as other enterprise-related skills. Thereafter, it also helped in the marketing of the products to buyers from Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, among others.
Soon, it became part of the International Federation of Alternative Trade (IFAT) which seeks to ensure that trade is beneficial both for the workers and producers as well as the corporations. This involvement with IFAT made CCAP’s interventions consistent with the principles of fairness and transparent trading.
In order to focus more on the capacity and partnership building work, CCAP formed CCAP Fairtrade for Development Inc. (CCAP Fairtrade) in May 1998 to be the assume the enterprise functions it once performed for its partners. As 100% owner of CCAP Fairtrade, the latter’s profits fund the formers programs for its partners.
However, the decade that followed was a financially challenging one for CCAP Fairtrade. Sales of product was not consistent as partner-buyers start to fold or have reduced their requirements. Soon, CCAP Fairtrade could no longer support the programs of CCAP. This is why in 2015, the Board of Trustees approved a 3-year Strategic Plan to further enhance its work and mission. The plan includes opening up CCAP to fundraising activities including application of grants for projects as well as the offering of Business Development Services (BDS) to government, civil society and business. BDS is designed to help develop the partner’s beneficiary-communities using CCAP’s almost 50 years of community enterprise development experience.
In 2018, the group updated its Vision-Mission to highlight that both organizations are Fair Trade advocates that specializes on developing partners both the artisans as well as the buyers. The newly-formulated Vision-Mission Statement is as follows:
