O God, who year by year renew for us the day when this your holy temple was consecrated, hear the prayers of your people and grant that in this place for you there may always be pure worship and for us, fullness of redemption.

The diocese is part of the universal Church established by the Holy See that is entrusted to a bishop and assisted by his presbyters that has its own institution.

Church is the place where the Christian community is gathered to hear the word of God, to offer intercession and praise him, and above all to celebrate the sacred mysteries of our faith, and it is the place where the holy sacrament of the eucharist kept. When the Christian community gathers to celebrate the liturgy, they create a sacred space and they build a church that is for this purpose. The stones and wood that builds the church is the visible sign of the “living stone” that builds up the living Church or temple – we who are baptize is the Church. It stands as a special sign of the pilgrim Church on earth and reflects the Church dwelling in heaven.

We should celebrate the birth of a Church that stands as a special sign of the pilgrim Church on earth and reflects the Church dwelling in heaven. In the tradition of the Church the date of the birth “natale” o “dies natalis” of churches or the date that it was dedicated is celebrated as a place or space for worship. Some of these churches are celebrated in the General Roman Calendar. Examples are the four major basilicas namely (1) Lateran Basilica which is the mother of all Churches on November 9, (2) Saint Mary Major on August 5 and the (3 & 4) Saints Peter and Paul on November 18.

The dedication of a church is important in the life of a local Church. It can be considered as the birth date of a particular Christian community. Annually the dedication of a church is commemorated and celebrated as a solemnity. Therefore every community has two feasts. The first is the feast of the patron as guide, example and intercessor of the community and the second is the feast of the community as a Church.

In a diocese, the date of the dedication of the Cathedral is important. The Cathedral is the concrete sign as a diocese. The Cathedral is considered the mother of all churches in the diocese and the principal church of the whole diocese. This is how important the date of the birth that it should be celebrated by the whole diocese in their respective parishes as a feast and at the Cathedral itself as a solemnity which is the highest rank in the liturgical days.

The celebration of the anniversary of the dedication of the Cathedral or church is not just focused on the building or physical structure in which God bestows His graces and blessings through Jesus who is the true temple of the New Covenant but also on the faith-community who gathers or assembles there. In the visible structure of the church we see the Church as the spouse of Christ, build of living stones. Here the disciples of Christ gathers as the Body of Christ.

The annual celebration of the dedication of the cathedral and of our parish churches is our celebration as the Church, the People of God, worshipping in spirit and truth, faithful and loyal to the Church.

The date of the dedication of the Cubao Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is August 14. The liturgical texts for the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours is from the Common of the Dedication of a Church. In the Philippine Edition of the Third Typical Edition of the Roman Missal in English, our Cathedral will use the formula from pages 827-831 and for the parishes under the diocese of Cubao it is on pages 830-832. As a solemnity at the Cathedral the Gloria and Credo are sung or said. As feast in all the parishes, chapels and communities of persons in consecrated life, the Gloria is sung or said but not the Creed. For the scriptural readings for the Mass, refer to the Common of Dedication of a Church in the Book of the Readings or the Lectionary. This also applies for the Liturgy of the Hours for those who pray in common or in private.

As members of local Christian community we need to know the date of the dedication of our parish church. It will be a feast in all the parishes and consecrated communities in the entire Diocese.
