Pride Month

With an undertaking to make each commemoration of Pride Month more truthful in celebrating the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community, Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista calls upon everyone to join the fight against discrimination now more than ever in the legislation of the SOGIESC (S*xual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and S*x Characteristics) Equality Bill.

This yearโ€™s celebration in the Philippines has been one with the increase of alarming controversies that have taken root from inconsideration and disrespect shown towards members of the community โ€“to whom numerous events of the past month have been dedicated and indiscriminate as a show of kindred spirit. As we normalize living the truth by protecting and uplifting LGBTQIA+ and marginalized individuals through policies and safe spaces, the passage of the SOGIESC Equality bill becomes more crucial to be done with urgency.

This bill shall protect vulnerable communities including children, the youth, the poor, persons with disabilities, indigenous people, and those religious beliefs from discrimination based on their SOGIESC. As such, prohibition and penalization of any forms of harassment, physical assault, derogatory comments, and gender profiling ensure every individualโ€™s human rights are protected. Government agencies shall be required to develop and promote non-discriminatory programs which kickstart the elimination of discriminatory practices outlined in the bill. Therefore, we call upon our legislators to reach a consensus and pass this legislation to reduce gender discrimination, violence, and inequalities among all Filipino people.

Let us celebrate the love and pride of our community as we continuously advocate for safer spaces, the SOGIESC Equality bill, opposition to gender-based violence and discrimination and other injustices the LGBTQIA+ community suffered over the centuries of darkness.

It has been 30 years since progressive movements in the Philippines started to follow suit in the 20th commemoration of the Stonewall Riot by advancing LGBTQIA+ rights and anti-price hikes in the country โ€“starting a fight not only for their own but for all. Despite spending decades pushing these humanitarian advocacies, the LGBTQIA+ community is still subjected to discrimination, violence, and inequalities prevailing due to conservative ideologies and practices, as there are no effective laws safeguarding the rights of the minority.

Let us remember the significance of the Stonewall Riots and honor the resilience and courage of the LGBTQIA+ community. Be rest assured that Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista stands steadfast in its dedication to creating a more inclusive and equitable society.

Filipinos are born with the spirit of warriors who fight for the fulfillment of their independence in body, mind, and soul. As we honor bravery and sacrifice required in this inherent mission, Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista lives on its dedication to ignite such spirit within each generation of Filipinos. We must all grow into a consciousness that the fight for our independence has transformed into the goal of indigenous sovereignty through cultural, psychological and economic freedom.

With a history of revolutions against colonial rule and dictatorship and the continuous fight for equity and equality, our nation proves that bayanihan remains our strongest determinant of success.

The biggest adversity to our self-determination in the contemporary world is right at our doorstep as we unveil threats to national security and territorial integrity. In our normal conversations, we witness and assert the general publicโ€™s interest in pursuing life and liberty as the media variously portrays. We should not falter to the current foreign aggression by power-hungry countries, and if we do, it will be the cause of our fall to the hands of these aggressors.

True independence lies in the commitment to preserve the dignity and identity of the Filipino people by protecting and prioritizing our rights and welfare at all costs especially for the oppressed and marginalized โ€“ the poor, the Indigenous people, the women, the LGBTQ+ community, and all those who have been left behind. We believe in the power of progressive growth such that ensuring the welfare of the most vulnerable among us will finally uplift our democratic nation.

Through unity and collective effort, let us work tirelessly to bridge divides and cultivate a culture of mutual respect in distinguishing ourselves from foreign influences. Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista calls on every Filipino to join us on the mission of continuing to strive for a Philippines where justice prevails, where opportunity awaits, and where every citizen lives with dignity and pride โ€”a nation that truly embodies our ideals of independence and democracy.

Jeepney Phaseout

Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista continuously demands fair wages and safe working conditions for our labor force who seek employment opportunities in hopes of narrowing current socio-economic gaps prevalent in our country.

Todayโ€™s Labor Day calls on nationwide attention to the intersectionality of policies and issues with the challenges that workers face given insufficient living conditions. In recognizing that their persistence is tied to their want for quality life, we begin to understand that every day is offered as a sacrifice to turn the cogs of an economy that minimally values their input. The labor force must duly be recognized as the nationโ€™s human capital in boosting economic development thus, the need for comprehensive labor reform is more pressing than ever. This includes policies ensuring fair wages, developing diligent enforcement of labor laws, and establishing stronger social safety nets to support those affected by economic transitions. Without proactive measures to address these impending shifts, many workers could find themselves without livelihoods or facing downward pressure on wages and working conditions.

Workers will only be left in unfavorable conditions if left without the support of the collective to their cause. Thus, we emphasize the strength in our numbers in echoing their calls. As the streets are filled with the cries of various progressive organizations advocating for better conditions for our workers, we urge everyone to join in the discussion that encapsulates the reality and gravity of not addressing these issues.

In this spirit, Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista calls upon the Lasallian community to join the movement progressing workers' rights and welfare. May 1 Labor Day renews our growing commitment to the plight of the labor sector. Let us always stand in solidarity with workers, recognizing their vital role in our society. The rights we enjoy today were hard-won, and through unity and collective effort, we can continue to champion and build a future where we extend that to every worker who is treated with the fairness and respect they are inherently entitled to.

The irony of this scheme is found in the Philippine Development Plan that was lobbied as a promise of social and economic transformation through job creation and accelerated poverty reduction. Much like the ill-fated course of most nationwide policies, implementation failures plagued numerous projects related to it including the PUV Modernization Program. The Philippine Institute of Development Studies reported that the Philippines is behind its Southeast Asian neighbors in the quality and efficiency of its roads and infrastructures despite insistent investment and budget allocation on building bridges and highways that are supposed to be accessible to our poor countrymen [1] [2]. In looking into the national budget from 2010 to 2021, Rappler summarized that the P2.8-trillion infrastructure allocation was exhausted for the construction, widening, and maintenance of roads over said time [3]. Projects on road-based public transportation only received one percent (1%) from this allocation.

In reviewing these policies, the overemphasis on constructing road infrastructure traces back to the car-centric privatization of individual ownership of vehicles which have less restrictive policies than the public transportation modes. Policymaking and implementation in the Philippines continue in dissonance not only with each other but also with its constituents who are claimed as the target beneficiaries in the long run.

Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista deems this anti-poor program a neglect of the public transportation crisis evident in the disproportionate allocation of infrastructure budgets favoring road construction over accessible public transit. This exacerbates the challenges faced by the labor force and the commuting public. Despite constitutional guarantees and labor legislation, persistent struggles persist among laborers, manifesting in strikes and calls for livable wages. This does not serve the best interest of the public and provides instability within various industries relying on the transportation sector.

The implementation of the policy remained snail-paced with the failure of LGUs to submit their Local Public Transport Route Plan (LPTRP) due to their limited scope of transportation. Sufficient training and development for staff, proper funding and allocation of resources, and sustainable methods of data gathering and evaluation should be established as it is the standard of service provided for local public transport. The lack of a nationwide approach toward public transportation destabilizes the current status of their policies and frameworks to implement as a resolution to the problem.

Today, we celebrate International Womenโ€™s Day as a significant milestone for the hardships and contributions of women worldwide from diverse backgrounds. Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista asserts that women belong in all spaces for them to fulfill their role in building nations, uplifting economies, and nurturing society. While we celebrate International Womenโ€™s Month through colorful festivities, let their courage prevail within us as we amplify concurrent calls against injustices and inequalities plaguing different sectors until this day. Women are at the forefront of change, ever steadfast in their convictions.

However, this day is more than just a celebration, it is a recognition of the absolute realities women struggle amidst in a highly traditional and patriarchal society. Women continue to experience constant discrimination daily, from objectification, sexual and physical harassment, violence, labor inequalities, and denied access to economic and social resources that are crucial to their well-being and development. Filipino women are paid 18.4 percent less than men which demonstrates gender wage gaps exist in digital jobs, parallel with the United States wherein the gender pay gap is at 18 percent. For every peso that Filipino agricultural workers earn, a Filipina earns 92 centavos [1]. The prevalent workplace discrimination against women resulted in the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data showing that there are consistently fewer women who have been working compared to men. In their 2020 report, only about a third (34.5%) of women were in the labor force, while over half (54.8%) of men were working [2]. Moreover, a disturbingly high number of nearly one in six Filipino women aged 15-49, have reported experiencing violence from their partners, which takes many forms, including physical harm, sexual assault, or emotional abuse [3]. There is a need, more than ever, for a relentless pursuit of reformative change for women to be protected and provided with sufficient resources capable of instilling safety and justice in our fellow Filipina individuals.

Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista expresses optimism for a future where women and all genders receive equal opportunities, recognition, and justice to thrive in a developing world. With unity and collective effort, we can surmount present injustices and inequalities by challenging traditional gender roles and stereotypes and resisting the macho-feudal systems made by oppressive and superior forces. Today marks our commitment to continue the fight after these fun festivities with a more fierce and feisty side of womanhood.

Tapat urges the Filipino people, especially the youth, to heighten their support to progressive gender-based organizations in combating the ills of intersectionality that hinder the potential of the community in fighting for a more equitable and prosperous society for the succeeding generations. In solidarity with individuals and organizations, we call upon the urgent legislation of the SOGIESC Equality Bill to defend our fellow countrymen from acts of discrimination, and their freedom of expression, and provide accessible and quality social services in bridging gaps in our community. As such, we demand that the government take actionable steps to deliver equal gender pay policies in the workplace, support women-owned businesses in lifting the economy, and strengthen capacity-building initiatives for minorities to flourish and succeed.

Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista reiterates its unwavering commitment to its founding principles to advance womenโ€™s rights and gender equality as it was before called upon by the patriotism of the Tapat freedom fighters during the Marcos Regime. As we are at the forefront of this fight, we must remain united and resolute in the undying will to preserve and uphold democratic ideals for the liberation of the Filipino people from these social ills.

Maligayang Araw ng mga Kababaihan!

Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista stands with the people in commemorating the 38th EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary as the crucial movement that represents the commitment to truth, justice, and freedom in the pursuit of national interests determined by Filipinos. Through the lens of the different sectors, citizens attest their suffering from the lack of grit of this Marcos-led Administration to prioritize socioeconomic and political issues. The annual commemoration every 25th of February shall continue to amplify the fight and shall only grow with every attempt to subdue it.

With its establishment on the 16th of August 1985 at the height of asserting studentsโ€™ rights and welfare amidst a dictatorship, Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista cements its identity on active student participation alongside other youth organizations in becoming efficient catalysts of social reform and transformation. The pursuit of truth and justice manifests itself in pro-student agendas that fight against the distortion of facts and disinformation given the widespread historical distortion under this Marcos-led administration. For the past 38 years, the political organization has been advocating for national interests. They oppose the proposed charter change, especially its economic rules that favor foreign businesses over our country's self-determination in protected industries. The unity and collective effort of progressive youth are crucial in maintaining the courage sparked by EDSA. People are criticizing the government for avoiding important issues, like the sneaky collection of signatures for a 'people's initiative' that aims to change fundamental legislative rules. Further fueling this reignited courage of the youth, the non-declaration of the 38th EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary as a national holiday is taken as an action reducing the significance of the historical event with the reason being the date falling on a weekend [1].

The significance of declaring the EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary as a holiday lies in its continuous support for the movements initiated by various sectors in response to the events of 1986. The initial declaration of the first anniversary as a holiday set the precedent [2], with subsequent commemorations occurring on the same day and time. These celebrations involve ceremonies and programs to honor the collective courage of Filipinos, reasserting their rights and freedom in democracy. Arguing that declaring a holiday on a day already designated for rest minimizes socioeconomic impact is an insufficient reason to reject a proper proclamation [3]. This dichotomy between social and economic benefits distorts the essence of development and progress. From the perspective of the masses, different sectors affirm that the EDSA People Power Revolution should never be forgotten, regardless of the time, day, or circumstance

As the nation witnesses its citizens honoring those who marched before us, the commemoration defends their memory against historical distortion stemming from the downplaying of dictatorship during the Marcos regime. The fight against the proposed charter change joins this yearโ€™s commemoration in defense of the 1987 Constitution asserting every Filipinoโ€™s civil liberties and basic human rights as they fulfill their role in nation-building. In the resolute spirit it shares with the collective, Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista upholds its commitment to champion active student participation in advancing various causes that enable truth, justice, and freedom to prevail. The youth shall protect the democracy that is built upon the rich history of exercising its functions and advancing progress from forces attempting to corrupt it.
