On 29th and 30th August 2024, CLAYSS held the 27th International Service-Learning Conference at the Universidad Catolica Argentina, Buenos Aires. Members of the Uniservitate Asia & Oceania Regional Network were given the opportunity to speak in Panel Discussions and to present their Service-Learning (SL) Experiences in Concurrent Sessions of Panel and Poster presentations.
The participation of representatives from 5 continents and from the 7 Uniservitate Regional Hubs was highlighted. The conference started with a Plenary Session with Prof. Maria Nieves Tapia, the Founder and Director of CLAYSS, elaborating on SLโs contribution to citizenship education in todayโs contexts of democracy in decline and the Post-Truth. She pointed out that the role of the Higher Education Institution in partnership with the community through SL is to produce good democratic citizens with a duty and responsibility to others. Should students be pessimistic about contributions to society, she likens it to โEducating a King so that he will abdicate."
Ms. Fritzie Ian De Vera, the Vice President for Lasallian Mission of De La Salle University, spoke in a panel โInstitutionalization Processes of Solidarity Service-Learningโ. She shared the DLSU SL Institutionalization Experience and highlighted SLโs role in promoting the Lasallian DNA.
On the second day of the Conference, on the 30th, Dr. Carol Ma was a lively speaker in the Plenary on โSDGs as a curriculum for science and citizenship educationโ. She elaborated on the connection and possibilities of SL in Gerontology, and how this contributes to the UN SDGs. She pointed out that educators must age well for oneself, the students, and the community.
In a Concurrent Session on Service-Learning and the SDGs on Good Health and Well-Being, Dr. Mary Jane Flores of DLSU showcased the SL course โMedical Parasitology and Immunologyโ, in how it is conducted going through the Lasallian Reflection Framework and its contributions to the SDGs. Dr. Paul Taylor of ACU shared in five-minutes his Poster Presentation โFuture in Youth."
In the Concurrent Session on Service-Learning and the SDGs on Prosperity and Development, two representatives from DLSU presented their posters. Ms. Fritzie Ian De Vera presented the โDLSU contributions to UN SDGs Prosperity Pillar through SLโ and Mr. Karol Jim Louis Castillo presented the โProject MAGKASAPI - MAGkasamang KAunlaran SA Pag-aaral at Paglalarong Intelektwalโ.

The St. La Salle Preschool Catechism and Values Education Program wrapped up its third term successfully, despite unexpected challenges. Held from May 8 to June 5, 2024, the program aimed to instill values like mindfulness, kindness, and responsibility in pre-kindergarten students.
Initially planned as in-person sessions, the program quickly adapted to online learning due to high heat and suspension of classes. The team transitioned smoothly, with volunteers filming lessons from home to maintain engagement. Dance breaks and familiar activities were seamlessly integrated into the virtual format, keeping the students excited.
The return to face-to-face classes was met with enthusiasm, as students reconnected with peers and volunteers. The program concluded with a ceremony that included teamwork-focused games, strengthening family bonds. Parents praised the program's impact, noting positive changes in their children's behavior.
While successful, the program highlighted areas for improvement, such as increasing interactiveness. Overall, the program effectively achieved its goals and left lasting memories for students and families alike.

This past week, August 5-9, 2024, the De La Salle University Service-Learning team traveled to Hong Kong and Macao for benchmarking activities. We explored the Service-Learning Programs at several top universities to gather insights and best practices that could help enhance our own DLSU SLP.
We visited the Hong Kong Baptist University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, La Salle College in Hong Kong, and the University of St. Joseph in Macao. Each campus had its own unique approach to integrating and deploying Service-Learning within its academic programs, all of which were aligned with the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Some of the key takeaways from our visits include innovative documentation and reporting mechanisms, effective operational structures, and impactful alignment of Service-Learning projects with SDGs.
Additionally, our engagement with the Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASEACCU) through the University of St. Joseph in Macao has paved the way for future Service-Learning related programs and for expanding the Uniservitate Network through the DLSU-Uniservitate Asia and Oceania Regional Hub.
