Surigao City observed its first-ever Arbor Day on October 7, 2024, with a large-scale tree-planting activity organized by the Surigao City Environment & Natural Resources Office (ENRO), headed by Engr. Jose Alfonso Casurra. Themed "Atong Kalasangan, Atong Kaugmaon" ("Our Forests, Our Future"), the event underscored the city's growing commitment to environmental preservation and sustainability.
Over 2,450 trees were planted across two areasโ750 at the City Forest Park in Barangay Cagniog and 1,700 in Sitio Tagbasingan, Barangay Mat-i. The initiative saw broad support, with 105 participants from the City Government and Navarro Memorial Central Elementary School in Cagniog. At the same time, 151 representatives from National Line Agencies and Civil Society Organizations took part in the activity in Mat-i.
Mayor Paul Dumlao highlighted the importance of the event in contributing to the city's environmental goals, stating, "Arbor Day is a reminder that each tree we plant today helps build a healthier, more resilient Surigao City for future generations."
This initiative is part of Surigao City's broader effort to promote reforestation and protect its natural resources. The city hopes that this first Arbor Day will pave the way for more environmental programs in the years ahead.
