The famous story of a tooth fairy is always mythical. They are living in the world of folklore where they would roam around at night to gather teeth of children. But just like how distinct the fairies are, not all fairies wing away to send magic, some are in an office to cast spell and do that magic in oneβs teeth- like the job of a dentist.
Envisioning an effective, efficient, and economical dental service to school populace, the university dental officer of Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), Dr. Joel A. Torres toils like a tooth fairy, as he does his duty in grinding for a good grin of his clients every day.
Dr. Torres has been a dentist for 43 years and practiced his profession in the university for over 9 years. It has been that long of quality dental health service for the students and faculty, but he remained unpopular of his duty due to a circumstance he called βunseenβ management.
According to Dr. Torres, EVSU community seems to give less attention of their oral health, so to speak, unaware of the presence of dental clinic in the university. Anent to this, his office has not been recognized in the university for a long time.
βWala pa jud narecognize, amo balitaw gipakuan nako sa Industrial Wheel para marecognize ang among services, for the students to know gihapon (Still unrecognized, that is why I seek the attention from the Industrial Wheel to have the chance of our services to get recognized and for the students to know as well.),β Dr. Torres asserted.
Subsequently, a student from Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA), Jessrael AbaΓ±o commented that he is not aware that there are dental services offered in the university until his recent discovery on this academic year. He also stated that he was delighted of the news.
"I was not aware that there are free dental services in EVSU, I just know it recently as I started my OJT and heard it from my fellow interns, but I'm really happy about what I have learned, it's a big help once availed," AbaΓ±o said.
But just like a tooth fairy who secretly serves the children in their dreams while mystically taking their aching tooth away, the university dental officer continuously prioritizes his duty amongst other events and activities in the university.
βI can hardly go with the EVSU activities other than dental services because every day I have to attend to scheduled services,β Dr. Torres added.
While upholding with his oath in the practice of his profession, Dr. Torres remained true to the mission and vision of their office, regardless of anonymity in the community. He continued giving off the brightness in smiles of his clients, and blistering pixie dust in the lives of the students and faculty as their smiles shine confidently after receiving dental services for free.
βOkay ra. Basta mutrabaho lang ko as a dentist, makabulig koβs mga estudyante ug faculty (Itβs okay. I will just continue working as a dentist, to help the students and the faculty.),β Dr. Torres appended.
Whether fairies existed in dreams or reality, there always comes a magical story of someone who passionately serves for the benefit of others. They come with varied forms and identities, but for the dental officer of the university, he is more than just a tooth fairy for his commitment deserves to be recognized as a striking employee of Eastern Visayas State University.

PUBLIC ADVISORY ON THE RISKS OF HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES AMIDST RISING TEMPERATURES
Advisory No. 2023-007 | April 04, 2023
With the onset of the dry season, the country is expected to continue to experience higher temperatures and less frequent rainfall towards the end of May 2023.
In line with this, the DOH Eastern Visayas Center for Health Development (EVCHD) is warning the public against the risks associated with prolonged exposure to the rising temperatures. In particular, an increased risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke (which often arises when the body loses the ability to control its internal temperature), is anticipated in many parts of the country,
Hot and humid weather, strenuous activities in hot weather, dehydration, excessive sun exposure, are common factors that lead to heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses. Likewise, infants, the elderly, athletes, and individuals who work outside are more prone to these conditions.
Symptoms of heat-related illnesses can include headache, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, and flushed, warm skin. The symptoms of heat stroke, on the other hand, are typically more severe and include a fever of at least 40Β°C, rapid heartbeat and breathing, convulsions, and unconsciousness.
The following are some preventive measures, as well as some steps to remember when the aforementioned signs and symptoms occur:
Preventive Measures:
1. Spend less time outdoors. Take frequent breaks from the heat when outdoors.
2. Drink lots of water, and avoid drinks with caffeine (e.g., coffee, tea).
3. Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothes.
4. Use umbrellas, hats, and sleeved clothing when outdoors.
5. Schedule outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day.
6. Avoid staying inside a car when it is hot outside.
Management:
1. Move the person to a shady spot and lie him/her down and elevate legs. If conscious, have them sip water;
2. Remove clothing, apply cool water to the skin and provide ventilation;
3. Apply ice packs to the armpits, wrists, ankles, and groin; and
4. Bring to a hospital immediately.

As the Holy Week approaches, the EVSU community looks forward to having a well-deserved break. This long weekend provides a great opportunity to recharge and reflect on the past few months.
As we take this time to rejuvenate, let us keep in mind the core values of EVSU, which are Excellence, Value-Laden, Service-Driven, and Unity in Diversity. Here are some ways to make the most of the Holy Week in line with these values:
Read new books
EVSU is committed to Excellence and promoting lifelong learning. Take advantage of the long weekend to read new books and expand your knowledge.
Take a digital detox
In our fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in technology and social media. This Holy Week, practice Value-Laden living by disconnecting from your devices and spending time connecting with nature and loved ones.
Connect with nature
Take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life and spend time outdoors. Whether it's a hike, picnic, or simply taking a walk in the park, being in nature can help refresh your mind and spirit.
Allot time for reflection
Service-Driven living involves not only serving others but also reflecting on our own personal growth. Take some time to reflect on your goals, aspirations, and areas for improvement.
Spend time with loved ones
EVSU values Unity in Diversity and promoting harmonious relationships. Use this time to strengthen your bonds with family and friends, and learn more about each other's perspectives.
Learn something new
EVSU promotes Excellence and lifelong learning. Use this time to take up a new hobby or skill, attend a workshop, or enroll in an online course.
As we observe the Holy Week, let us not only enjoy the break but also take this opportunity to live out the values of EVSU. Let us continue to strive for Excellence, live Value-Laden lives, serve others, and promote Unity in Diversity. May this long weekend be a time of rest, reflection, and renewal for all EVSUnistas.
