As we wrap up 2023 and get ready for 2024, we wanted to repost something we shared a few months ago.

HR's strategic value for people and organizations cannot and must not be assessed by whether we are people's friends or not. That's not how any other business function's performance is assessed, nor should it be ours. We can be people's friends, but that's neither a mandate nor a requisite for us to create and deliver value. We can be kind, polite and friendly, which have, indeed, a significant impact on our work. But that doesn't mean we have to be... "friends".

Not only for our effectiveness as a function, but for our holistic well-being and wellness, please keep the premise of the text below in mind during the new year and forward. You are valuable. Your work matters. You make a difference. All, whether you are friends with the people you work with or not.

We never hear "marketing is not your friend". We never see the headline in the front page of a business magazine be "sales is not your friend". We never hear hallway gossip "IT is not your friend".

But, for some reason, we hear a lot "HR is not your friend"... and always it comes in a negative context as if to say "don't trust HR, because HR is not your friend and it doesn't have your back". There's an (unfounded and erroneous) expectation that for HR to be effective it has to be your "friend"... And this is not true.

This doesn't mean that HR can't be your friend, because it can; or that it has to be your enemy, because it doesn't. It just means that, just like any other business function at work, HR doesn't have to be anyone's "friend" to get the job done. Instead, HR has to care. And HR doesn't need to be the "friend" to care. It can care without being a friend.

This unreasonable expectation that HR has to be your friend has also turned into another misconception: that HR only protects the interests of the company, and not the people.

Well, HR has to care for the company and the people, both, simultaneously. HR can't really care for the people if it doesn't care for the company; and it can't care for the company if it doesn't really care for the people. It's a fine line. One that no other function has to walk so carefully as HR does (and is expected to).

HR can be your friend. But it doesn't have to. The same way that you are not expected to be someone's friend to do your job. It is wonderful when friendship emerges in the workplace, but that's not the default expectation for anyone (and it shouldn't be for HR either).

This is what HR actually is.
