The huge bill is crimson at the base but the distal half is yellow, and there is a large casque. Similar spp. B. hydrocorax is similar but slightly larger with the whole bill crimson, and the skin surrounding the eye is yellow; in B. mindanensis this is mostly black with a small yellow area below the eye. 🌿🌸 New Species Discovered 🌸🌿
In October 2022, during a botanical expedition at the Tabu-tabu Biodiversity Monitoring Site of Pasonanca Natural Park in the Philippines, a researcher from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences stumbled upon a previously unknown Sonerila species.
After careful examination and thorough research, this newfound species was officially named Sonerila mapelo. It boasts distinctive features, such as short petioles and unique leaf morphology, setting it apart from all other Philippine Sonerila species.
Sonerila mapelo can be found in the lush montane forests of the Zamboanga Peninsula, thriving as a terrestrial on moss cushions or as an epiphyte on tree ferns' lower trunks. This species is a testament to the incredible biodiversity of the region.
Researchers have classified Sonerila mapelo as vulnerable due to its limited known habitat within the Tabu Tabu BMS of Pasonanca Natural Park, La Paz, Zamboanga City. This discovery highlights the importance of preserving our natural environments.

Pasonanca Natural Park (PaNP) is declared an ASEAN HERITAGE PARK.
Pasonanca Natural Park was proclaimed on July 5, 1999, pursuant to PD No. 132 under the category of Natural Park and its peripheral areas as Buffer Zones. The Natural Park has a total aggregate area of 17,511.998 hectares. The source of water for domestic use by the City populace is the only remaining close canopy forest in Zamboanga City and is also home to rare flora and fauna, some of which are unique to the city.
With the declaration of the PaNP as an ASEAN Heritage Park the more we have to protect and conserve the only gem we have.
TODAY:
