Valuable details about first commercially available antiobiotic
The basis for the first commercially available antibiotic, Prontosil, was discovered in 1932.
In 1939, German pathologist Gerhard Domagk received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this discovery, the first drug effective against bacterial infections. He was forced by the N**i regime to refuse the Nobel Prize and was arrested by the Gestapo for a week. After the war, in 1947, Domagk was finally able to receive his Prize, but not the monetary portion of the prize due to the time that had elapsed.
During the 19th century doctors discovered that many diseases are caused by infections - attacks by microorganisms. This led to the search for chemical preparations to combat bacteria and other microorganisms. Gerhard Domagk and his colleagues injected a number of mice with the lethal dose of a bacterial strain, haemolytic streptococci, and approximately half of them were given a specific quantity of Prontosil 1.5 hours after being infected.
On 24 December, 1932, it was found in an experiment that all the controls had died, whereas all the mice which had been given Prontosil were alive and well. Prontosil and its effects rapidly became known throughout the world. For the first time some of the serious problems caused by bacteria, such as blood infections and tonsillitis, could be cured.
