Toomas Hendrik Ilves was honoured with the Medal of the Courier from Warsaw. The Award Gala took place yesterday at the Warsaw Rising Museum.

💬'Both Jan Nowak-Jeziorański and Toomas Hendrik Ilves, guided by the history of their nations and a thorough analysis of current events, warned shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union about the risk of a resurgence and intensification of imperial tendencies in Russia, which, with the passivity of the West, could pose a serious threat to the security of Central and Eastern Europe and, consequently, also to the United States and its European allies', said Jerzy Koźmiński, member of the Award Chapter of the Courier from Warsaw Medal

Stanisław Sosabowski, the commander of the Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade was a well-known Polish WW2 General.

➡During the time his soldiers took part in Operation Market-Garden, his son Stanisław Janusz Sosabowski was in Warsaw, heavily wounded as a result of fighting in the Warsaw Uprising. He lost his sight and on the first day of the Warsaw revolt, he had rescued 50 Jews.

➡His father fought for Polish independence miles away from Poland. Sosabowski Junior stayed in the occupied country. He defended Poland in 1939 and was involved with the underground resistance.

➡They both fought for freedom and despite the enormous sacrifice freedom didn’t come. The German aggressor was defeated, but Poland was enslaved by the communists.

➡General Sosobowski and his son didn’t return to Poland after the war. They both settled in Great Britain living a life in exile far away from their homeland.

➡Stanisław Janusz Sosabowski became involved with the Polish underground resistance in December 1939. During the time of the German occupation of Warsaw, he participated in many Home Army operations, which included the ex*****on of a traitor and a German Bahnschutz officer known for his cruelty, as well as sabotage acts.

➡When the Warsaw Uprising broke out on 1 August 1944, he participated in a successful assault on the Waffen-SS warehouses.

➡On the same day together with his unit, he freed 50 Jews kept under guard near the infamous Umschlagplatz – an area adjacent to a railway station where Jews were assembled for deportation to the German camps.

➡While fighting in Warsaw he was heavily wounded and lost his sight. He became a POW and thanks to the efforts of his father he settled in Great Britain after the war.

➡He worked as a rheumatologist (he had secretly studied medicine in occupied Warsaw because
higher education was not allowed) and was a member of the General Medical Council. He never regained his sight.

➡„For 56 years he has not complained about his fate. I don't know anyone with such strength of character” - said Stanisław Likiernik, a former Polish Home Army officer.

➡Stanisław Janusz Sosabowski, born on 6 January 1917 in Brno, Austro-Hungarian Empire, passed away in Wimborne Minster, Great Britain, on 6 November 2000.

It is truly inspiring that after all the ravages WW2 caused, Poles managed to rebuild their country. Everything comes at a cost, though. Those whose life ended due to German and Soviet barbarity, vanished forever. Lost lives cannot be restored.

"We just opened an exhibition 'Warsaw. Phoenix from the ashes’ in Hiroshima. I hope it will be presented later in Osaka and other cities of 🇯🇵. Warsaw paid enormous price for its desire for FREEDOM. I hope one day we’ll present it here in Tokio", said Paweł Ukielski, Deputy Head of the Warsaw Rising Museum

Exhibition "Warsaw. Phoenix from the ashes" is open now in Hiroshima 🇯🇵.

The convergence of the fates of Warsaw and Hiroshima, the cities that were destroyed due to war and rebuilt by the inhabitants afterwards, make the exhibition supra-regional.
