Yes we did it again! Well done to you all!

Look at these results! These bunch of participants had each other on their toes. Motivation was high, weight loss rates was also consistent and fantastic. Training they did religiously. For all the hard efforts the price has paid off. For those not achieving their goals we know there has been underlying medical issues as well as a few moms with babies. One of my diabetic patients recently told me that he thought that he should always consume a carbohydrate when injecting insulin. So many things has changed in the Diabetes world. In fact, when he excluded the carbohydrates he had less low blood glucose episodes and fewer high glucose readings. 🙋🏼

You could be genetically predisposed to lactose and gluten intolerance which could cause gut symptoms when you eat the wrong diet. The latest version of the DNA health test includes a gut section testing specifically for this (and of course many other things) Tests are really affordable these days with prices starting at R1850. The gut produces the largest amount of immune cells in the body. If your gut is not healthy, it is likely that neither are you nor your immune system. And as we know, we need a healthy immune to fight off viruses. Symptoms of an unhealthy gut includes, Bloating, abdominal pain, winds, constipation and diarrhoea. Adding pre and probiotics to your diet is a good starting point for improving the health of your gut.

As we all think we eat a healthy diet we should consider what that means. I will be adding a few posts on the guidelines of healthy eating to add some food for thought

Simply put, you cannot “boost” your immune system through diet, and no specific food or supplement will prevent you catching COVID-19/Coronavirus. Good hygiene practice remains the best means of avoiding infection.

To date, the European Food Safety Authority have not authorised any claim for a food or food component in the UK to be labelled as protecting against infection.

There are many nutrients that are involved with the normal functioning of the immune system and therefore we would encourage maintaining a health balanced diet in order to support immune function (include copper, folate, iron, selenium, zinc and vitamins A, B6, B12, C and D). Health without Compromise

I am a qualified Clinical Dietitian with 20 years of Private Practice experience. My story starts long before that though when at the age of 11 yrs old, I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. From that day onwards, regular fingerpicking to test my blood sugar levels, multiple injections, a very strict diet and exercise routine and a fear of losing my life, became my daily reality. The diet that was prescribed to me, which included tedious weighing and measuring of portions and above all not being allowed most of the things a normal teenager would like (and want!) to eat. Soon I started experimenting with foods (… the wrong ones I must add) and the effect on my insulin dosages and glucose readings. I challenged the professionals on the status quo and decided to study further in the nutritional science field to see if there was a way around the restrictive and often “Not Allowed!” food labels that were associated with my condition. I was determined to find a way to incorporate my favourite foods into my diet as before, but without jeopardising my health.

In 2012 I founded Chocolate Nutrition – Health Without Compromise, at my practice in Cape Town, South Africa where I helped clients to achieve optimal health without restricting their lifestyle. This is something that I firmly believe in – that it is possible to be healthy and at your ideal weight by eating a balance diet of wholesome foods, but still allowing yourself a chocolate every now and then!

I now live and work in Cascais, Portugal. I specialise in diabetes, but also enjoy working with various health conditions, DNA mapping and sportspeople. I was a competitive swimmer and have also competed in various triathlons, so other than advice on nutrition, I can also help put you on the right path regarding your exercise regime.

I hold a BSC Med Honours degree from the University of Stellenbosch and is registered as a Clinical Dietitian at the medical and nutritional board in the UK, Portugal and South Africa.
