A Loud Silence

It felt right to end the EP with a song written in a moment that was inspiring due to the fact that I became a little bit more self-aware. I had a breakthrough, I had a vision of change, but also an understanding that I would never again be the same. We go through so much in life, that these small victories can be bittersweet. It's that little bit of extra knowledge about something that makes us hopeful. But at the same time, knowing that there's still so much to go through and grow. One day things will feel a bit more in place than they are right now. And even if I changed, I will always still try to do things for the sake of my happiness. The journey doesn't end here...

Even in dark times, there will always be that one place in which you find solace. That one place that brings you peace. For me it's the ocean. It reminds me that life is constantly changing, but no matter how much it changes, there will always be some things that no one can ever take away from you.

Home for me isn't just a place. It's so many different places, it's so many different people, so many different feelings. It's where and when I feel like things make sense. But it's also nostalgia. A feeling of moments passed. A realization of how you got to that place to begin with. I will always know where my home is.

I clearly remember my state of mind when I wrote this song. I was really lost. I couldn't find any meaning in anything around me at that time. I think because of that, and because it was a very hard time for me, it became my favourite song from the EP. It's definitely a sad song. Every time I listen to it, I feel like I could just wander aimlessly for hours, oblivious to whatever is happening around me.

That's what happens most of the time. I get too caught up in my own head. It's hard to explain this to most people. It's hard for someone else to understand how tough and draining it is. They take it for lack of effort, when in reality I just can't find the strength to stop thinking for a second. Life has just too many nuances, too many possibilities for chaos inside our heads, and we're all just trying to be better every day. But we also need to understand ourselves in order for that to happen.

This song is a reflection of my life. A life spent with conflicting thoughts, not knowing what's right or what's wrong. Do I make the right decisions? Do I learn from my mistakes? How can I be better? I'm still searching for the answers...

This one started off with a very simple bass line, and a rhythmic idea that was stuck in my head for a while. I don’t really use the same process every time I write a song. It really depends on a lot of things. Inspiration comes in a lot of different ways, but this song started out like that. With a bit of a different approach, and that’s why I think this is probably the one where I didn’t really care about structure and just let it flow naturally as inspiration came to me.

This song is about life in general and the constant changes that we see every day. The ups and downs. Life can be full of beautiful moments, but it can also be quite overwhelming, especially nowadays. Everything feels like a mess. We rarely get to enjoy the moments we live because we're too worried about something else, or because we're too caught up in trying to make some sense of something that might not even be that important. And most of the time we end up not realizing that. But that doesn't mean life shouldn't be enjoyed to the fullest. We rarely get to do it, because we limit ourselves too much, but when we do get the chance, or the peace of mind to enjoy those moments, and when we have that understanding, we can truly experience the beauty of it.

This was the first full song I wrote for A Loud Silence. After sitting down in April 2020 and writing a couple of riffs out of boredom, I pretty much left them for dead. A few months later, I decided to try and make something out of those few riffs. I worked on the song nonstop, changed it so many times, and ultimately came to the point where I was happy with the way it turned out. It was also the very first one I ever tried mixing. All of this while going through the second wave of the pandemic, which was around the time I felt the lowest in the past couple of years. So it made sense to give it a name that resonated with me.

A personal definition of Paradox relates to "someone who does two things that seem to be opposite to each other, or who has qualities that are opposite. A person having seemingly contradictory phases." - this was probably the biggest breakthrough I had on my journey to becoming more self-aware, and one that explains a lot of why I act the way I do sometimes. I am a contradiction. I am everything, but I am also nothing at the same time. And I'm still learning how to deal with it.

“A Brief Moment of Clarity”

This was the last song I wrote for the EP. It was supposed to be a small interlude, but it turned into something more, and it became sort of an introduction to the rest of the songs. I wanted it to set the right vibe for the listening experience, and build up on that with the rest of the songs.

I wrote this song to remind myself of those very short and sporadic moments, in which somehow, I'm able to get a glimpse of an answer I was looking for, or simply a realization of something I hadn't been able to come to, up until that point. That brief moment of clarity gives me perspective, adds a small piece to the puzzle, but always leaves me eager for more. It goes away just as fast as it comes, and all I'm left to do is to try and let it sink in, hoping one day it will make sense.

A Loud Silence - this is what I am.

I always had this thought in my head of one day creating my own solo project. And I always knew exactly what I wanted to do. I just never expected it to surface the way it did.

We all know this past year wasn’t easy for anyone. We had to deal with something we’ve never dealt with before. Something that drastically changed our routine, our mood, our relationship with people, and most of all, our mindset. It just goes to show that we really should never take anything for granted. But safe to say there were also some positive things about it.

Thankfully, music has always been a huge part of my life. It wasn’t always easy to focus on it though. Life happens, and there were a lot of things along the way that kept me from being able to achieve what I wanted. So I guess if there’s one thing I have to thank this stupid pandemic for, is that it finally allowed me to take the time to start something from scratch. After so many years of unconsciously waiting for the right time to do it, I am now writing my first solo EP.

I’m writing these songs mostly for myself, to express my feelings and my emotions. But I’m also excited to share them, in hopes that I’ll trigger some of these emotions in whoever’s listening to them. I’m trying to capture through melodies what sometimes I fail to say with words. That’s one of the main reasons why I wanted to make this an instrumental project (well, and also because I can’t sing for s**t).
