I knew everyone's name but his.

I was at a table, working on a piece when a funny lady — what you could call, arrogantly, a character — came in and called

" — Miúdo!..."

Kiddo, she meant. Blonde curls, huge around her face like some sort of Sun's glorious halo: her individuality and her power. Her originality.

I saw her often and then not at all. Via Paris, she moved to Brazil.

She taught me the wisdom of being a "character": the carving of the self into the tool of its own accomplishment and wonder. I never wanted to learn Kiddo's name.

"Broken eggs"

The dish always reminds me of that Almodovar: Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Both make me giggle.

A few lightly fried eggs, delicately placed over home-made fries — that are thin as slivers. Crispy crunchy slivers.

It is served hot, and those consuming it are tasked with cutting up the eggs so that the soft yolk spills out, over the potatoes, which soak up the yolk and make for a savory, salty meal.

Who knows the reason why there is little else more portuguese than a quick spanish dish? Especially when deftly and lovingly assembled in a tranquil and cozy café, on the main street of a sleepy neighbourhood of old convents, old-school locals and life-grabing expats.

Then again, Huevos Rotos showing up, who on earth would dare to care?
.. Maybe that's why they are so Portuguese.
