The German Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation (BSU) has released a report on an accident involving the Finnish-flagged heavy-lift vessel MERI. On 30 November 2022, the vessel was transporting a mobile harbour crane from Rostock to Esbjerg via the Kiel Canal when the crane's tower head struck the bridges at Holtenau, despite having documentation for permissible height.

The incident caused major damage:

- Lashings securing the 643-ton crane broke
- Crane tilted, losing eight counterweights
- Crane and vessel's deck were heavily damaged
- Bridges required repairs costing EUR 6 million, disrupting traffic until 21 December 2023

BSU investigators identified several causes:

- Incorrect transport drawings
- Lack of accurate height measurements
- Failure to notice deviations during loading

Recommendations include ensuring updated, accurate transport drawings and adherence to approved transport manuals. The crane manufacturer has already implemented dual control measures and documented height measurements.

The BSU validated these steps and stressed the need for all parties to take appropriate actions to prevent similar accidents in the future.
